The Manchester United Thread

Can't understand Van Gaal at all, says the squad is not balanced but plays 3 strikers and a winger as midfielder against West Ham with 2 CMs on bench. Says Rooney has privilege to start every game because he is captain of the team, so why can't he play him as striker and play actual midfielders in midfield.

Second half performance was better but the say Van Gaal is setting up team is just bizarre. These are the games where Fellaini should start as we offered 0 physical threat to West Ham.

Absolutely spot on about the balance. The starting line up basically had 3 defensive outfield players in Jones, Rojo and Blind. Where is the physical threat in our side? Especially against a Big Sam team which you know exactly what your going to get from. You simply cant tippy tappy around these teams. Stoke have been getting results against the big boys for years with a physical approach and a normal Allardyce team usually plays the same way.

Fellaini should have been starting. The last few games when he's started he's been one of our best players. Controlling midfield but also getting forward when necessary to provide an aerial threat (or throw his elbows around). Januzaj had no place in that starting 11 for me. Not in a game against a team like that. Di Maria has been very disappointing. RVP hasn't been the same since Fergie left and Falcao is just a waste of money. Wilson needs games instead.

Ive been calling for years for Rooney to take over from Scholes, and was happy when LVG said he wanted him to play there more often. In his first 4/5 games he was brilliant. Pinging balls all over the pitch, getting stuck in and joining the attacks late on like the Scholes of old and nicking the odd goal. But a large part of Rooney performing well was having Carrick alongside him. We are massively missing him in the middle at them moment. Obviously the attcking options arent working out. Falcao isnt taking to the Premier League at all. His work rate is excellent but at the end of the day the ball needs to be going in the net, and he has neither scored enough or assisted enough to justify his price tag for me.

We need a solid core in midfield. A midfield 3 of Carrick, Fellaini and Blind would be a good solid core. Allowing Fellaini to join the attack when needed and play in the hole like he does so well for Belgium with Carrick and Blind sitting. We need Di Maria out on the left. A good old fashioned out and out winger, with also the ability to tuck in and support a lone striker (Rooney). The right is a slight problem. As we would be playing players out of position (or away from their best position), if we dont choose Valencia to play there. Again Valencia is a more direct winger of old and maybe something we need, but he's a bit too predictable and his final ball is hit and miss. Wilson has played well when out on the right towards the end of games. Using his pace and energy. But again I feel he would be wasted out there.

Obviously we cant play all the big names in the starting 11. We need a team, not individuals. And we need to start it sooner rather than later. That way we can see who will be happy to be part of a TEAM and who wants to spit their dummy out because they arent starting every game.

My team would be: De Gea, Rafael, Jones, Rojo, Shaw, Blind, Carrick, Fellaini, Di Maria, Valencia, Rooney.

It gives us a solid core with Blind holding with Carrick and Fellaini in the middle. In attack it allows Fellaini to push up into the hole behind the striker where he can be very effective with his strength holding the ball up and join attacks late in the box. Direct wingers in Di Maria and Valencia putting in plenty of crosses for Rooney and Fellaini to get on to. It also allows Di Maria more of a free role to cut in and support Rooney as a second striker when needed like he did for Real. We already know what we get from Valencia. But his work rate down the right defensively is invaluable and with Rafael back we should have a solid unit down the right, attacking and defending as one.

With the security of Blind and Carrick holding in attack, it allows Shaw to push higher up and provide width. Especially when Di Maria cuts inside.

That for me is a solid TEAM both in attack and defense. Obviously we will have a very good bench when needed. Plus we always rotate. Given we qualify for European football next season, there are plenty of starts available for everyone. But we need to weed out now the ones that are likely to spit out their dummy when they start a few games on the bench. Falcao will be sent packing. He's done nothing to justify his wages as of yet, let alone the reported transfer fee. Especially when we have the likes of Wilson which will be more than happy to be a squad player for a good few years yet, and also getting his fair share of starts with rotation. RVP I think will be leaving if we can get a good offer in. He's the wrong side of 30 and really doesnt look interested since Fergie went and his form has been poor.

We have Januzaj that can play either flank when called upon. Mata/Herrera would obviously occupy Fellaini's spot when selected in the games we dont need as much physical presence. Herrera could even swap for Carrick so both Mata and Herrera could realistically get plenty of game time.

We have plenty of options already. They just arent being used in the correct way IMO. Trying to fit players into this "philosophy" obviously isnt working. We need to play to our players strengths and find a balance. IMO its pointless playing Di Maria in central midfield when he's one of the best out and out wingers in the world.

With the right signings in the summer, we should be back up there as the team to beat next season, but throwing names into an 11 and not making a team just isnt going to cut it.

Manchester United @ManUtd Follow #mufc Academy prospect Ben Pearson has extended his loan deal at Barnsley until 8 March. He’s played five games for the Tykes, scoring once.

Don't look like anyone will be signing Reus this summer. Contract extension close and will include a larger release clause. Also in an interview has said does not fancy playing in England and much likes the prospect of playing in Spain. Also mentioned this a few times in matches when talking about him.

An unnamed Manchester United player was filmed by team-mates performing an 'intimate *** act' with a woman in the toilets of an 'exclusive' club venue, according to allegations appearing in the Independent.

The claim comes from the Sun on Sunday and suggests the club is now investigating the alleged incident in which a woman 'in her 20s' performed a *** act on a Manchester United player whilst teammates recorded it on their mobile phones above and under the cubicles.

Whilst neither the woman nor the player has been named, it is reported that the video was later shared around the dressing room.

The woman at the centre of the allegation is quoted saying: "I have been crying my eyes out and I am not going into details about it now."

The Independent says Manchester United have been contacted for comment on the incident.

According to him, Di María had to fight off the two robbers who came into his house, while having his wife, daughter & mother in law in house]

Holy ****. No wonder he's been looking so bad as of late. **** like this would throw Vinnie Jones out of balance.

The robbery thing I can understand if true, but using the weather as an excuse is rather pathetic.

"This was a good point, because they played badly," said Gary Neville as the final whistle sounded at the Boleyn Ground on Sunday. I can see Neville's point, that United would have taken a draw with five minutes remaining, but it largely ignores the fact that this was a 90-minute match, rather than a five-minute affair.Furthermore, playing badly and picking up a point was acceptable in November when Louis van Gaal's squad was decimated by injuries. Come February, with the Dutchman in charge for six months and a fit first-choice team at his disposal, the focus must surely be on the "playing badly" element of Neville's statement. And boy did they play badly.
For a manager who continuously promotes the importance of balance, Van Gaal has done his best to create a lop-sided and haphazard shape to United's play. There are too many issues to discuss at length, but Wayne Rooney's experiment as a midfielder looks defunct, Angel Di Maria seems robotic and starved of creativity, Adnan Januzaj has regressed alarmingly, Luke Shaw is lethargic and Radamel Falcao seems hamstrung by confidence issues.
For all Van Gaal's undoubted coaching pedigree, how many players in United's squad have actually improved under his tenure? David de Gea for sure, although a manager can only take small credit for the performances of his goalkeeper. Daley Blind, perhaps, although he arrived with a glowing reputation. Ashley Young, definitely. Ashley Young, the only unqualified success story of the Van Gaal era to date? That's almost laughable.
With the money United spent last summer, the least we expected was for them to be box office. Nobody could be certain of success or failure, but the obvious prediction would that it would be **** interesting to watch. Di Maria? Ander Herrera? Januzaj? Shaw? Robin van Persie? Rooney? We giggled at the prospect.
Instead, the football is verging on the unwatchable. The match against West Ham was emblematic of the season as a whole, United's lethargy going forward easily thwarted by a side of lesser quality but a more coherent plan of attack. The only point of interest in United this season is the simmering undercurrent that one of the defenders could metaphorically kick himself in the face. Where is the pace? Where is the flair? Where is the excitement?
United conceded in the 49th minute. The only substitution made by Van Gaal (other than to waste time in the final few seconds) was to bring on Marouane Fellaini and spend the final 20 minutes hitting the ball long into West Ham's area. Leaving Ander Herrera and Juan Mata on the bench throughout should provoke a literal Spanish inquisition - that's verging on gross negligence. Kevin Nolan dominated the midfield for goodness sake. I'm trying hard not to swear here.
Comparisons with David Moyes seem trite, but are inevitable when after 24 league matches both managers enjoyed the same number of victories. Moyes lasted only two more months than this.
Van Gaal is far from that stage, but there is no doubt that the mood is turning at Old Trafford. Ambitions are being slowly shifted to match reality. It really shouldn't have been like this.

Nice copy and paste from football365

Di Maria isn't an old fashioned winger, and hasnt been since before he left Benfica, his best position is as a CM, and even when he played "wide" for Madrid, he was extremly narrow and deep. Valencia's final ball isnt just hit and miss, it's non-existent. We'd be much better off calling back Nani or playing Januzaj. We really dont need both Blind and Carrick playing either, better off with Herrera in the. I would always start one of Di Maria/Herrera with Blind/Carrick, and then you have your option of Fellaini or Mata for the third. very balanced trio, that you will always have a protector passer and a creative ball carrier and then have either a more powerful option or a more creative one. You have Rooney at 10, or even you could have one of Di Maria/Herrera/Mata that you dont select in mid at 10, and then I would play Wilson and one of RVP/Falcao

I'd just play Rooney and Wilson up front tbh as neither RVP nor Falcao are up to par.

I also don't get the complaints about playing 2 strikers and obsession about having 4 in the back. Van Gaal is absolutely spot on when he says the squad is unbalanced. As in, it literally has no right side. You want to play a formation that relies on wing play with no viable attacking right back or right winger? That's a sure way to battle for that Europa Leage spots.

Two strikers is the way to go, at least for this season. Its just a matter of finding right balance in the midfield and a reliable striker combination.

Apart from Blind, de gea and maybe Rojo i wouldn't be assed who leaves now. Falcao and RVP hopefully both be gone in the summer. Sign proper midfielder, depay and push rooney forward with wilson if we continue with the pointless ***** 2 striker bollocks.

LVG complains about no balance yet spent all that money and then plays rooney in midfield, fellaini pretty much up top and mata deeper in alot of games.

A lot of knee jerk comments. Tbh, it was expected. This United side is not great. It has potential, but its up to LVG to unveil it. So far we've seen little from him. There is some improvement, but this is far from anywhere near acceptable level. I would much rather watch United playing to score from minute one, taking risk even if it means getting countered. Our attacking talent should be enough to score more than we can concede. Probably.

Just bring back cole and yorke, they'll show rvp and falcao how to be a partnership, that's if falcao can sort out his two feet and control a ball.

Just curious, where do people stand regarding signing Falcao permanently after this season? And what would the reaction be if LvG does the opposite?
