The Manchester United Thread

What the ****, man. You do realize that when we're referencing FM stats of a player, this is just a forum in-joke?

Nobody should take FM as a serious argument towards a signing. Its just a video game, SI gets things wrong all the time. Remember when in FM11 they overrated Siggurosson and he was chain winning Ballon d'Or over Ronaldo and Messi? Speaking of Ronaldo and Messi, for last 5 years SI has been trying, and failing, to make Messi better, but Ronaldo always ends up breaking the engine. So yeah.
Tell that to the many football clubs that use its database as a scouting tool. Their database is taken very seriously in their world of football and their database is very extensive. You are talking about the match engine which used to be dodgy, however the broken match engine has nothing to do with the accuracy of the database.

The player is the gamble. That he's expected to be 2nd choice at an unproven 19 years old, is a gamble. The fee makes it more of a gamble, but looking at the bigger picture, the fee is irrelevant. United need a striker.

Jesus, finally someone gets it.

Anyways, I think it's a decent gamble to take. Martial looks very talented from whatever I have read. He can genuinely go up and become a world-class player and then, no one will give a **** about the fee when he is lifting the CL trophy. Or he could be a gamble and give everyone a great laugh but that's about it. United have so much money that no material damage will be done

Exactly. The gamble isn't about the money at all.

Came on her to engage in my favourite past time of trolling the United thread over the fee paid for Martial. Realized that others got there before me

I kid. My views on fees have changed. At first I used to think Chelsea shouldn't overpay for players myself. But after seeing the cluster **** of this window, I rather see Pogba on the pitch wearing blue rather than the £80m sitting in the Russians bank account
Paul Pogba has proven a lot at his age and is world 11 quality. He's the only central midfielder on earth that has the the potential to succeed Vieira. Pogba is worth that much, at current market value. Martial is not in my opinion. To put this in perspective, the Lyon president has said that Lacazette would cost over 37 million pounds and he's scored 27 in 33 in a top league.

You don't get it mate. Regardless of whether he is worth the value or not, you forget that we are talking about United. They have insane revenue streams and they need a striker badly. So they rathe overpay, get a striker and win trophies rather than haggle over the fee when they really don't have to. Quality on the pitch rather than money in the bank

If this was the Aston Villa thread or something then maybe there would have been a uproar but it isn't

If only Hernandez stayed. Wouldn't be a footballing gamble then, just a money one. Do you know why he's going? Van Gaal not wanting to use him, presumably because Hernandez doesn't fit the style of play he wants or Hernandez fed up of hanging around, waiting for a chance to prove himself?

Got a feeling it's probably both.

He's not comparing them you melt.

Definitely both. That look LVG and Giggs gave each other when he missed the pen.

Its not like this is anything new. We paid over £20m for Anderson. Given the market change in those years, its probably the equivalent of paying £36m for him now. And didnt Anderson break his leg before we signed him? That was a massive gamble and didnt work out as well as we hoped, but Manchester United have always taken risks and we will continue to take risks. Hopefully Martial is a good risk. He's got the pace we have been lacking and can play anywhere at the top end of the pitch.

The only problem I have is we need somthing here and now. Not potential in 3 years. But there is no guarentee that an older more proven player would work out either. Every transfer in the Premier League is a risk. Even the best can look foolish. Martial could come straight in and be a revelation, or he could need time. The same 2 options a 28 year old International striker with a fantastic record would have moving to the Premier League. Lets just hope we are lucky.

The point was whether he was worth signing at that fee. He definitely isn't anywhere near as good as Hernandez and he isn't better at this current time, as James Wilson.

Maybe he is. Maybe he isn't. Point is United need a striker. Who else is United quality that could have been bought this late into the window that fits the profile that Martial does

Crucially if we do sign Martial, fee aside, what can we expect of him right now?

That's the more pertinent question for me above anything. What he is going for is not relevant to what he is being bought for.

You KNOW that the DDG "saga" is not about the price so dont act otherwise ...

Indeed, but that only works if we don't sell him. Knowing us right now, we'll sell him with 6 hours to go.

Jesus Christ, just how naive are you? Nobody ******* uses FM as a serious scouting tool, its SI marketing scheme made up to fool gullible fans. SI has a large scout network, but outside of the top leagues SI researches are not professionals, anybody can become SI scout, even you. No top club has ever gone on record saying they take FM database seriously.

That's the key point. As we discussed the other day and I mentioned over the page, someone proven in England like Austin that you could plug and play this year would seem far more beneficial to Van Gaal who isn't going to be here long term.

But regardless, said all summer long that the key to your season was keeping De Gea. And as I type, you still have so as long as the manger's not totally ****** him off and caused any animosity, that's been the biggest and key success of your entire window for me.

Didnt Everton in the Moyes days openly admit to using the FM database? Im going back quite a few years aswell.

The transfer price might not be the problem for United, but i hope it won't be a burden for the kid. You simply can't fathom these kind of values, especially when you're this young. Let's hope the fans will be patient so he can settle and gets these years to prove himself. I do believe that United will do their best to keep his feet on the ground.

Not quite true. There is a master database that clubs do use seriously, as it Prozone data also incorporated into it. That one has been 98% accurate over the last 10 years
