The Manchester United Thread

Well, going off this season I don't think we have been any better with him and only two maybe three games where I think he has been particularly good.

I don't know how you can instantly say "no" when we can only go off what we've seen so far this season and how much of a contribution he makes next season.

If it's like this season again I'd deem it a failure personally, I mean even though the appearences you said were somewhat convincing on paper, I'd say in reality it hasn't been.

H'es been easily one of our better players this season, especially early one when he was allowed to ping the ball about. Something LVG has taken us away from.

Because I've actually paid attention to BS while he has gone through his various injuries in the last 3 years. He's never going to play 50 games a season, but he will be dangerously effective when used properly. Pep wanted to replace him with someone who could in Vidal.

You'd think Carrick is the 31 year and Bastian the 35 year old the way people talk about him

I know right. The fact that Germany still plan for him at the Euros says it all.

Good enough for Germany, but useless for United? hmmm.....

I know world cup winners, favourites for the euros who play high octane possession football. But apparently his legs have gone and he should just retire. Sometimes I wonder what the **** I am reading.

Its not ideal but he will be back to his industrious best I am sure. Also Mike correct me if I am wrong here people posting Pep did not want him etc etc, didn't Bayern want to keep him? But let him go to united for such a small fee because it was what he wanted? Could be wrong but thats how I remember it, on the open market he would have fetched easily twice what he went for.

There's a difference though, for Germany he is perfect because of the context how they can utilise him for games and then get significant rest between each game.

When I say 'useless' I'm referring to the context not him specifically as a player.

At United one of our biggest problems this season has been injuries AND never sticking to a consistent starting line up even when players have been performing well. There have been countless cases of players building some good form and then benched for the next few weeks without any reason.

Whereas a player like Schweinsteiger mainly hasn't tied down a place in this team due to injuries and fitness issues, if his condition of coming back from last injury is anything to go by I'm sure we can agree it will take time even after injury for him to be able to play at his best. Not ideal when playing in the most demanding league in terms of fixtures and schedule.

Bayern still felt getting 30-40 games a season out of him was more than worth it, they as a club still wanted him. He wanted the move after that. Bayern didnt stand in his way

But that's nothing to do with him or his injury though. Bastian get asked to play roles hes less suited, largely when we tried to shorhorn Fellaini into the side. There is a very obvious role for him. Deep pivot 90 minute control with 2 runners, 60 minutes as a runner. You get him 2 out of every 3 games, usually games one and three. But we havent done that at all, largely because other players have been benched (herrera and morgan), which has a direct impact on him, as they are two best suited. if you play Carrick and Fellaini, who has to be the runner: Bastian.

We all said it right at the start of the season: one of Carrick and Bastian plus one or two of Herrera and Morgan. This is has been badly underutilised

Bastian was excellent everytime he played, bar 2-3 games maybe when he was average.

Linked with James Rodriguez, Spanish media saying Madrid want to sell him and recoup the money they paid for him.

According to Marca, ManUtd are interested in the signing. If we sign Jose then we will see lot of Mendes clients moving to United, it was like that before, now it will be even more.

On the player, not sure how to react. Might end up like Mata where he won't have runners for him to pick passes.

James can run himself though which helps, closer to Silva, but a better finisher. Solves that right wing goalscorer creator issue in a brilliant manner. Therefore it's not happening.

Yeah but he excels as #10. He was brilliant when he played centrally last season and Madrid were on some winning streak. They started to lose games once he was injured.

If we sign him he should play as #10. My issue is again we will be signing player who is not that quick.

Very good player but not sure we are the right team for him, at least not under Van Gaal.

I'm not too worried about that, as Mata showed, when we turn up the tempo those kind of players will cut a side apart, especially with Martial on the other flank. The key will be the tempo.

But then also depends on the CF as well, you want a Benzema type clever forward, which would have been Rooney in his day.

This has Mendes all over it. 100% wont happen unless Jose is in charge, and even then...

James is just as good on the left as he is at #10.

His attitude would worry me though, especially if LVG ends up staying by some miracle. If James had problems communicating with Benitez, he won't work well with LVG who's even more of a control freak.

How's Otamendi doing?

Not as bad as Mangala or Demichelis but thanks for asking.

You know when you are a part of a shabby defence especially a partner in CB you're most likely going to look **** anyway? When it is your first season especially and he is trying to integrate into new country/team.

Doesn't make him a bad signing, if they sort out another consistent decent CB partner for him he'll no doubt start to show the form he is capable of.

I don't even see how anyone would anticipate Otamendi as a bad signing considering how good he was last season for Valencia, we're not talking an average season, we're talking an outstanding season. Plus I put quite a few names out there for CB because we did need one. Hence why most United fans are still clamouring for one this summer.

Plus Smalling has had shaky seasons and look at him this one, Otamendi could come back to life once their defense gets sorted out.
