The Manchester United Thread

I would still rather have Dithering Dave then The Mental One at United.

i dunno i'm quite happy for united to have champions league football, something we would have never achieved under Davey.

Anyhow, back to the style of football.

What if in place of Rooney we put, and this is just a hypothetical example, healthy Aguero. Suddenly it might as well turn out, the team is actually devastating in attack. On paper they have everything to be just that.

There's a 20 million a year player in the squad, performing on the level of blindfolded Stephen Hawking. And until that's resolved, I don't think we can honestly attempt to judge Van Gaal's tactics.

From football 365 (and VERY CORRECT AND ANNOYING):

He is an insufferably smug b**tard but quotes from Alan Pardew after Saturday’s 0-0 should make Louis van Gaal pause and ponder as he prepares to write down the same names in the same positions to face CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night.
“We didn’t give Martial an inch today,” said Pardew whilst strutting like a peacock. “Not an inch. It was a big target for us to stop him and we felt that if we could stop him we could stop their creative angle. And when you take into account his age, that’s some recommendation.

“I have to say that he’s an impressive young player. I think he handled himself very well today, because he would have felt our presence around him, and still he had moments in the game.

“With such a young player, he’ll have to be very, very careful, the Manchester United manager, to keep his exuberance there. Because we’re all looking to stop him.”

Add that (‘keep Martial’s exuberance’) to the long list of tasks in Van Gaal’s in tray. Right at the top should be ‘attack attack attack’ but Pardew’s words point to a massive problem: A 19-year-old ‘winger’ is now being targeted by the opposition. And it’s a whole lot easier to double up on a winger than a pacey striker playing on the shoulder of the last man. Martin Kelly and Wilfried Zaha could combine to mute Martial; he may well have destroyed Scott Dann and Damien Delaney over 90 minutes.

“We don’t know (Martial’s best position) yet because he played always in Monaco as a left winger; as manager I have to see what is the best balance in the team. That’s not so simple, so I have to decide every week dependable on the game plan and qualities of opponent, and so on,” said Van Gaal after the game.

Sorry Louis but that’s b*llocks. Martial played almost exclusively for Monaco last season as a striker. He then played exceptionally well for Manchester United as a striker. You gave him the No. 9 shirt because he is a striker.

Meanwhile, your chosen striker did not touch the ball in the penalty area at Crystal Palace while you had no shots on target from open play.

If, as Pardew suggests, you stop Manchester United by stopping Martial, then Van Gaal is helping put pressure on the brakes.

He didn't actually stop martial though. Martial made the best chance of the entire game. Which Rooney blew

Rooney didn't blow it because he isn't quick enough to reach that ball. This isn't lightning 2010 Rooney.
BTW: Martial is a natural striker, however he played most of his first team games on the left wing for Monaco. That's why Van Gaal called him a winger. The ball to Rooney was over hit by mere inches.

Because Rooney is so slow these days. I know he played most games on the left. That is a gilt edged chance. If it's out by inches then you Thor your body at it. Once the keeper is off line even the smallest deviations puts it past him

Watch the chance again, Rooney was busting a gut to get to the ball. It's harsh to be hyper critical to the point at which he's criticised for not being quick!

Rooney messed up the chance, he slowed down to adjust his stride instead of running at full speed.

Rooney could have easily made the first touch to take it around the keeper.

Exactly. He hesitated and fckd it up. And what drives me nuts is that not lightning speed what Rooney lacked in that situation but courage and confidence to round the keeper.

Firstly, he's got to time his run to stay onside, meaning that he has to adjust his stride to achieve this. Watch the timing of the run. When the ball gets hit, he's busting a gut to get onto that ball. Strikers can't be running at 100% speed all of the time. Why do you think he scored so many goals? If he doesn't adjust his strike there, he's offside. You don't think he decided '**** it I don't wanna score today'. Are things so dire that we're criticising an out of form striker who barely gets any chances for not being quick enough to get to the ball?

It's not like Rooney has been missing chance after chance. What else do you expect when you have an out of form striker who hardly gets any chances to score? I get that an out of form Wayne Rooney's first touch and passing has been poor, but this seems to be a fundamental issue of a lack of creativity. It's a bit worrying when two players from a title rival creates the same amount of chances as your whole team, of a higher quality.

He's got to watch Martial make the pass to ensure that he's onside. As a result of that, he doesnt know that the keeper has come out that far. The ball from Martial comes in so quickly that there's no way that he knows where the keeper is. It's excellent anticipation from the keeper than anything else. Martial hits the ball a fraction of a second too late and over hits it by inches. There's no way that Rooney accelerates earlier without being offside.

He slowed down after he made the run, when the ball was just passing him.

He scored many goals because he was excellent player, now he is on decline and his confidence is shot.

Dude you need to watch games than just going by some numbers or some imaginations. No one is blaming Rooney for not scoring, just watch his game for once before making any post.

Rooney is one of the big reason why chances are not created. Every one two played with him is a waste of possession, players never get passes back from Rooney, his first touch is horrendous and doesn't help him to pose any threat at all. His reflexes are **** slow, he is just few seconds late for every pass. It's near impossible to create anything for this Rooney.

When your striker can't run or create space, it's not possible to create chances.

He had the chance to take first touch instead of running it down.

That near chance there is created by Rooney's movement more than Martial's pass. Rooney's movement and timing of the run is excellent there. When Martial hits the ball, Rooney doesn't know the keeper has come out to intercept. If he touches the ball, that early, he takes the ball too wide and the chance is gone. It's just a great bit up goalkeeping and Rooney being unlucky that the pass was inches away.

United have had creativity issues under Van Gaal. You cut exactly blame Rooney for that. Fact is a striker is much sharper on form and that he isn't going to get any form without chances. There's something fundamentally wrong when 2 player from a rival create more that your whole squad! United's attacking play lacks fluidity and cohesion.
