The Manchester United Thread

Not as bad as Mangala or Demichelis but thanks for asking.

You know when you are a part of a shabby defence especially a partner in CB you're most likely going to look **** anyway? When it is your first season especially and he is trying to integrate into new country/team.

Doesn't make him a bad signing, if they sort out another consistent decent CB partner for him he'll no doubt start to show the form he is capable of.

I don't even see how anyone would anticipate Otamendi as a bad signing considering how good he was last season for Valencia, we're not talking an average season, we're talking an outstanding season. Plus I put quite a few names out there for CB because we did need one. Hence why most United fans are still clamouring for one this summer.

Plus Smalling has had shaky seasons and look at him this one, Otamendi could come back to life once their defense gets sorted out.

Otamendi has been below average, and not because he's being exposed. He's been making bad positional errors routinely, though not to the point that he should retire (like Demichelis) or should be sold (City are willing to sell Mangala for a big loss now). Otamendi would have played where Smalling is, and on that point we definitely didnt need that for 45m

We can all look retrospectively and say now that Otamendi has been below average/wouldn't buy. But that's football, you can only go on current form of last season for the most part, just like people will do for Leicester's players in the summer.

I just don't see how I am blamed for wanting Otamendi, there is plenty of United fans who fancied him and it's only now you can say... alright probably wouldn't of worked. I'll hold my hands up and say that if it makes people happy.

Any CB we sign would be a gamble, including this summer whether it's Laporte or Stones, **** just look at both of their forms this season and it has been below par for periods of the season.

Signing James or Isco would be another classic case of signing a player and trying to shoehorn them in the side. We can argue they could play out-wide but they both best as no.10's so we have no room for them.

Only way either of these signings make sense is if Mata goes which is a strong possibility if Jose comes in. Do you really think Jose will risk having a player in that dressing room who will have a negative picture of him? I can't see it.

Like someone else said, we need a natural wide player and someone with real pace down that flank.

I actually said it at the time too, repeatedly.

Yeh I remember you didn't want him to be fair but I know a lot of United fans did at the time. Moreso as they were just crying out for a CB.

But any CB we sign shall be a gamble, as their isn't a perfect option out there at the moment.

It's not about being a perfect option, its the fact he's exactly the same as Smalling, if we are going to sign a CB it needs to be a ball player, not another stopper. Needs to be someone like Laporte

He could be a one season wonder.

If we werent owed the money by Valencia, i dont think we would have taken Otamendi at full price either. but for the 8mil cash, hes been fine. If Pelle knew how to play with a deeper defensive line he'd have been great.

Worth 8 for us, yes. Worth the 30 for you, No.

Good point, but in an inflated market in the summer coming yet again we're going to end up overpaying for any CB we get especially if as expected it is Stones or Laporte.

So lets buy a CB who will actually benefit us, rather than one who is exactly the same as our best CB

Apparently LVG has been left out of the promo stuff for the China tour. He's been included for the last 2. Biggest hint yet maybe?

Yes but Smalling has only really got over his injury problems this season and second half of last season, I think going into this season one could of predicted using Otamendi with Blind quite a lot if Smalling got injured. As it turns out Smalling hasn't been injured so it's irrelevant anyway.

But one could say if you want a ball playing defender why not just stick with Blind? Rather than having Stones and Blind for example?

Yeh on Sky Sports News, looks like he is a goner after this season. No reason for this and tbh I expect this will get the media wheels in motion and I don't see how the club won't be able to comment on this now this has occurred.

I wouldnt spend 45m on cover/competition for Smalling, I'd go for a good 15/20m rated option and sell Jones.

If we are going to upgrade the defense we should upgrade the "weakest" part, which would be Blind, though that's no slight on him as he's been excellent. And would cover Carricks departure as Blind could move back to DM

Isn't the RB our weakest part? Blind was great bar few games as CD. That said, I would love to get another CD, and move Blind to midfield.
