The Manchester United Thread

I don't blame Darmian totally, you know what type of player he is and he's always more of a RB for me. Not saying he doesn't take blame for yesterday somewhat though, because he does.

No mate not all his fault. Hes defo limited as a FB and especially on the left. Bailly just as much to blame made 2 mistakes in there first goal. Even Jones played a part not getting back to cover the front post as the cross came in.

I was quite surprised last night how little help Darmian got when in possession no options at all, he could pretty much only pass it backwards meanwhile our other Fullback Valencia had options all the time, Lukaku running deep, Herrera and Mkhitaryan coming short etc..

And on the 2nd goal, I think It's Herrera confusing Phil Jones? Herrera is marking the goalscorer, but just as the corner is hit he runs away from him which probably confuses Jones.. but Jones falling over.. yeah that's just Jones. :'(

Problem is Rashford always likes to run in behind which is ok but Darmian isn't going to get forward enough to make them passes. Can see what was trying to do with there high line early on. But as the game went on and they got deeper Rashford was not getting that space, and didn't adjust by offering us width. That's when Martial came on and it changed for the better.

Think that second goals was all on Jones. He was marking Moting on all set pieces. He took his eye of his man ball watched, then fell over himself trying to adjust.

Love Hughes as a player. But he's been bitter towards Utd for a long while! Turned into a right arrogant and self entitled *******.

Simon Stone @sistoney67

Very obvious Mark Hughes swore at Jose. That and feeling he was trying to get him sent to stand why @ManUtd boss opted against hand shake.

same mate sparky was my favourite player growing up but i cant help but feel hes a little bitter after what happened at city and not getting a big job.i may be wrong its just what i feel

That's an extrapolation and then some.

Telling him to get out/ get back into his own technical area equates to 'trying to get him sent the stands?'

That's the kind of B/S Castles would come out with.

Big game tomorrow, I want to see rotation but also a win.
Hoping for this team vs Basel in CL.

And then this team vs Everton in the weekend, and if Lindelöf or Smalling plays well I could see one of them start instead of Jones.

Fellaini out again I read somewhere this morning and Lindelöf and Smalling to start. Don't think Romero will play much except from the 2 cup comps. But wouldn't mind either way. Wouldn't mind Lingard and Martial starting. Think Young and Shaw could be on the bench. Can't see Pogba not starting! Most probs Carrick, Pogba, Herrera in a 3.

Weve got him swearing at Jose on our iso dump. Not even a debate that it happened

#MUFC boss Mourinho hopes Fellaini overcomes his calf issue. "He's an important player for me - a lot more important than you can imagine"

Mourinho on Lindelof: "I think it is easier for him to play in the CL. No need to adapt, he needs a little bit of time to adapt to the PL"

Jose Mourinho confirms David De Gea will start for #MUFC against Basel instead of Sergio Romero. Won't have one GK for league, one for cups

"We're strong, playing well and have confidence in ourselves," says Jose. "It's a difficult game tomorrow but we have the quality to win."

Sound. I don't doubt that. Emotions run high on touchlines. But that's still a leap to the fella' who tweeted suggesting he was trying to get him sent to the stand.

Yeah, thats an extrapolation. But Hughes was obnoxious, and on the swearing alone I can see why he's not shaken his hand. Not just a United thing tbh, Hughes has become quite an obnoxious person in general

Best team out that's fit and not overplayed tomorrow. Basel are a side that can do you if you're complacent. And home wins are your bread and butter, especially in the CL. Top seeding is going to be close enough with Benfica as it is without having a shock at home.

And in case people think it can't happen, Ashley Young bailed us out with a great finish at home for it to finish 3-3, and we lost 2-1 away back in 2011

Best team out that's fit and not overplayed tomorrow. .....

This. And as the seasons 5 games old, nobody should need resting regardless.

You don't **** around in the CL. This isn't the Europa where you can rest and give younger guys experience unless you're at a stage the back end the groups where you've secured qualification early. And even then you still need a good deal of experience to help the younger lads through.

This is the pinnacle of football anywhere and you don't risk going light.

TEAM NEWS: MANCHESTER UNITED V FC BASEL

Jose Mourinho cannot confirm if Marouane Fellaini will be fit enough to play against FC Basel, after the Manchester United midfielder missed the trip to Stoke City with a calf injury.

The Belgian picked up a problem while he was representing his country during the recent international break, and the manager admits he feels “weaker” without that option in the squad. Following the press conference, the midfielder did join up with his colleagues for the open training session.

Speaking at the Aon Training Complex to preview Tuesday's UEFA Champions League match at Old Trafford, Mourinho told reporters: “Fellaini didn't train yesterday so let's see if he can today. He's a very important player for me, much more important than you can imagine. I feel weaker without Fellaini in my squad, it doesn't matter if it's on the pitch or if it's on the bench. So if his condition improves then he will be selected, because I need him but at the moment. But I cannot say yet.”

Asked if Fellaini's injury is a recurrence of an old calf issue, Jose said: “Yes, he had a problem with his national team and then he played a match against Greece, and after the match he felt the problem.”

Mourinho also stated David De Gea will start against the Swiss side at Old Trafford, despite Sergio Romero being his regular goalkeeper throughout last season’s successful Europa League campaign.

“I do what I think is the best for the team,” the boss said. “I don’t like that clear separation of ‘I play in this competition and you play in this competition’. And I think in this moment, David is playing very well and is very confident. I will go with David tomorrow again.”

Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof will both start at centre-back against Basel, with recent Premier League starters Phil Jones and Eric Bailly both serving suspensions in Europe. In his MUTV interview at the Aon Training Complex, the boss revealed he had always planned to select the pair.

“They are all at the same level so it is no problem at all,” Jose told us. “Even if Jones and Bailly were not suspended, I would probably play Smalling and Lindelof. For Lindelof, I think the competition is easier to adapt to because he is used to playing in the Champions League.

“Portuguese football is more comparable to the Champions League than the Premier League. I think with him, it will be a choice for me to play him in this match. Smalling is working well so why not use his experience. I trust them. I am not worried at all that Bailly and Jones are out.”

Expanding on Lindelof and his adaptation to United, Mourinho admitted the Swedish summer signing should be encouraged by Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s learning period last season, as well as a legendary Portuguese defender who shone during the manager’s first spell at Chelsea.

“Victor is an intelligent kid, he is very calm and of course he wants to play,” Jose said. “You know, we take it step by step. [At Chelsea] we had one of the best central defenders in the Premier League’s last decade, Ricardo Carvalho, and when he arrived from Portugal he was in trouble a little bit to adapt.

“Then he had an amazing career in the Premier League after that and I am sure Victor will be the same. So it is good for him to play in the Champions League and probably he won’t play at the weekend, but he will play again next week in the [Carabao] Cup so matches are coming for him.

Periera had a fairly good debut for Valencia at the weekend against Atletico. Started LM had some nice runs. Did one with a nice Crujyff turn at the end to create space for a shot but went over. Switched to the right for a little then switched back again start of second half. Solid first game. Good passing, and created some good attacking moments. Got subbed at 60ish mins for Gonçalo Guedes who was dogshit!

Saw a bit as well, can easily see him compete for the left, right and centre attacking positions maybe next season!
