Barcelona or Crawley? I know where I'd rather be ;)

We've got 32 year old Rhys Griffiths on trial from Port Talbot. He scored 180 goals in 181 appereances for Llaneli and recently moved to Port Talbot [And played in their friendly on Saturday] but will start for us against [the mighty] Truro tomorrow night. I suppose so the trial will see if he's good enough for the Football League, you can't fault that scoring record!

We've also been linked with Jamie Cureton, apparently we've offered him more wages than Exeter have, but that could be bullshit.

Nice news about Griffiths! Probably the best player in the League of Wales and deserves a crack in the FL, hope he does well for you.

Some of our fans aren't happy about being linked to a 32 year old fireman from the Welsh league, but if he's the man to score 15-20 goals a season, I couldn't care less about his age.

Portsmouth will only survive if all parties concerned "take a hit" on the money they are owed, says players' chief Gordon Taylor.
The club's administrators announced last week that the financially-stricken club could fold unless more of the squad can be sold off to further reduce the wage bill at Frastton Park with eight senior players understood to be in disagreement over unpaid salaries.

Supporters group SOS Pompey handed over an open letter to the players at the club's Eastleigh training ground on Monday in a bid to persuade players to compromise on their wages, while administrator Trevor Birch has said former owner Balram Chainrai and his company Portpin could pull out of their proposed deal to buy the club if more players are not moved on.

Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Taylor described the situation as embarrassing for the game and said some players had been "unfairly intimidated", but agreed all parties had to agree to lose out if the club was to stay in business.
"It's about everybody getting in the same room, the players, the club, the administrators, the potential new owners and deal with the situation rather than looking at it separately," Taylor told Sky Sports News.

"If not there's no transparency as to how serious the situation is. If this club is going to survive we need everybody to have something but not all that they are owed otherwise everybody's just going to get nothing."

Taylor: Unity vital for Pompey | Sky Sports

Next few days will pretty much determine the fate of the club. And even if something does happen-will they have enough players in the squad in time for kick off. An absolute shambolic mess and a complete embarasment to football. Nothing by sympathy for the fans of this great club.

A 1-0 win against Truro tonight in our 2nd pre-season friendly.

Rhys Griffiths got the goal and apparently he put in a fantastic performance- Although we only won 1-0, apparently we deserved to win it by more and played some nice stuff, which is promising. The only cause for concern is Jamie Lowry went off on crutches in the first half with a suspected ankle injury, a massive blow if he's out a prolonged spell.

Stay Strong Pompey !!!
BBC Sport - Portsmouth faces August closure threat say administrators

The Club has till August 10 to claim its existence.

There was a debate about this in IRC, and I was pretty much the only one who said people should be fighting to help Portsmouth survive.

The high earners- Like Ben-Haim, should be taking a wage cut and helping the club survive. Obviously I don't know Ben-Haim's bank balance, but I can only assume after many years of playing professional football for teams like Chelsea, he has quite a bit of money left over. I know it's not his fault Portsmouth are in the mess they are in, its the owners fault, but Ben Haim can easily be part of the solution.

If he doesn't take a pay cut, the club will die. It's as simple as that. If the club dies, Ben Haim gets none of the money he is owed from this administration process. Same with all the other players. Even if Ben Haim leaves the club, he'll still get all the money owed, aslong as the club exit administration. It just comes across to me as a bit greedy from players like Ben Haim- It's clear he doesn't give two ***** about the club he plays for, but liquidation would see years of proud history & tradition gone down the drain. It wouldn't just affect the supporters of the club, it would hit the city of Portsmouth hard, and football would once more lose some of its intergrity.

When we was in administration, people give up everything to help the club survive. Not just the players who had lucrative salaries, the normal staff who were on their normal wages. They had to go without pay for about 9 months. It wasn't fair on them, it wasn't their fault, but they thought- If I don't go without pay, the club will die, and the fans and city loses Plymouth Argyle FC forever. The players had to do the same. Carl Fletcher, Romain Larrieu & Simon all took paycuts- If they didn't, we would be AFC Argyle in division 12, preparing for a blockbuster match against Torpoint United on the opening day of the season.

Even the man who took us over said he hated football- But he didn't it do to get some pounds in his pocket, he did it for the fans, staff and players of the club, who had been through so much. We're well on the way to recovery now after 7 months in administration, and I think there is hope for Portsmouth [And before people call us 'lucky', that would be hugely disrespectful to everything the fans, players and staff went through to help the club survive] - Aslong as those players don't come across as greedy, aslong as they take the paycuts and become part of the solution not the problem.. There's no problem why a fans trust can't come in and take over at Portsmouth. I think its fair to say, the fans know best, especially as the FA's fit & proper test is ****.

If there's a successful solution, Portsmouth will just have to learn from the lessons of their past. At the moment, they're on a life support machine, and their future is in the hands of people like Ben-Haim & Kanu. They will get ALL the money they are owed if they take this wage-cut, just over a 5 year period [or whatever time scale the new owner agree's. Every player has to agree to it, when we was about to exit administration, all the forms for every player had to be signed, and it was a long process] - But if the club is liquidated, what do they get from it? Nothing. Nobody wins if the club is liquidated.

[Sorry for the long post, this is just something that is close to my heart after the struggles we went through for so long!]

Brilliant post and all completely correct!

Becoming far too common for teams to have financial problems, Cardiff were close to going bust ourselves and you have to accept things to stay afloat i.e rebranding - rather have a club in red than no club after all!

Good Luck Pompey!

Well, I've certainly recieved some better news this morning.

James Brent has confirmed work on the redevelopment of the 'Grandstand' at Home Park will begin next pre-season, subject to planning permission. The stand will be a 7000 all seater, include an ice-rink on the old car park [Which will have 2000 seats, and will be 'international' standard]- A hotel linked by a footbridge, and possibly a cinema. After many years of being promised a new grandstand [And at one a point a 45k seater stadium] by various people, James Brent appears to be the man to live up to his promises. James Brent, if you pull this one off- Thank you very much indeed.

Cardiff complete signing of Kim BoKyung. Saw him for South Korea yesterday against Mexico at the olympics, he looks good, just what we need, use both feet, first touch, pace, beats a man, good delivery, gets forward!

Bring on the season!!

Gas have signed David Clarkson and Garry Kenneth. Cracking signings for L2!

Interestingly we've signed Rogvi Baldvinsson from some Norwegian side. Faroe Isle international. McGhee must have some decent contacts! L1 here we come!

It is about time they redeveloped the old main stand, such a horrible state compared to the rest of the stadium. Fingers crossed that this is all true and the green army are moving in the right direction again.

I'm 95% certain that James Brent will get the new stand complete- I think he's the best owner we could wish for, he's not in it for himself, he's doing it for the club.. My hat goes off to you Mr Brent, sir!

I'm also VERY excited for the new season now. I've been down at Home Park helping package the season tickets- We've still got about another 4000 to do, so could be there a long time!

Ended up going Tiverton away last night with the president of Argyle and Darren Purse's son. Good evening, entertaining match of football!

Cardiff sign Heidar Helgusson from QPR on one-year contract \0/ /0\ \0/

Winger Andres Gurrieri & Striker Rhys Griffiths sign on free transfers after successful trials.

Thought this was a Football league thread rather than Plymouth Argyle's twitter page.

Last time I checked, we played in the Football League, so I'll use this thread.

Not my problem if nobody else uses the thread :)

It's prediction time!

Championship:

1. Bolton
2. Birmingham
Play-off winner: Blackpool

Relegated: In no particular order, Barnsley, Bristol City and Peterborough.

League 1:

1. Swindon
2. Brentford
play-off winner: Sheffield United

Relegated: Again, in no order, Bury, Shrewsbury, Walsall and Hartlepool.

I don't really know enough about League 2 to make any sensible predictions.

Your backing us? A side that has never scored a goal on a neutral ground a side who rarely gets close enough to score on a neutral ground to win the play-offs?

Please, Please, Please DO NOT put any money on that.
