Team report: Parma FC

View attachment 122846

Earlier this season, Cannavaro was appointed manager of Parma FC. Since then, the Italian club has taken part in 21 games out of their 38 in the Lega Pro Girone B and they look as good as ever. In this team report we will take a look at their December results as well as how they've been doing overall since the start of the season.

View attachment 122845
With just 2 wins from 7 games in total in December, Parma have been on a bit of a decline compared to their previous months but are still doing well overall, which is good news for Parma fans and Fabio Cannavaro. As a result of their good form, the Italian Ballon D'Or winner was actually rewarded with a new contract earlier in
December, a deal that will keep him at the club for another 2 years.

I'm extremely delighted to have signed a new deal here at Parma. It not only shows that the board believes in me but it also makes me feel more secure about my job and makes me realise that I've been doing a good job and as a result I'm getting a new contract. For the players and the fans, it's also good news because it means they can get used to having me around and hopefully if we keep working well together then I could stay here for even longer than two years. For now I'm focusing on the month ahead and really taking in as much as I can to see if we need to sign anyone during the winter transfer window that's coming up very soon.

In other news, Parma picked up two injuries this month for two quite important players which was actually the main reason why Parma looked a lot weaker in the last few matches of this month:

Thankfully for them, both of these players are now out during the winter break and won't miss any games, which was at Cannavaro's delight:

We were really scared of losing Jallow and Calaiò for a long time, they've both been key to our success in the league this season so far and it would be a real shame if we were to lose them for more than a month. Thankfully the physios came back telling me that they would both not be out for more than a month which means we'll have them both back perfectly healthy before the league kicks off again on the 21st of January.

In terms of how they've been doing overall, Parma can be very proud of their achievements in the league but also their good performances in the Coppa Italia Lega Pro, where they've now reached the quarter-finals of:

View attachment 122841
Juve Stabia, who are currently in 4th in the Lega Pro Girone C, will be a tough opponent for Parma but they've been doing well overall and if they keep their good form up, there's no reason to think they couldn't make it all the way to the final to even win the whole thing. Talking about their form and winning titles, after 21 games, the Lega Pro Girone B still looks very tight but shows that Parma are in control and are slowly actually becoming favourites to win the league:

View attachment 122840
The media predicted Parma to finish in 2nd and more than halfway through the season still seem to think the same thing, with Venezia having the best odds of winning the title which at this point will now probably be impossible to do for the club formerly managed by Inzaghi. As you can see from the table, it's no secret that Parma are very good offensively but defensively, there seems to be an issue. Despite an extensive list of strengths for their season so far, the list of weaknesses just seems to be a bit too long for a league leader:

View attachment 122838
The main issue is certainly finances, which has always been an issue with Parma and something that Cannavaro is going to need to be very careful about, especially if he wants to strengthen his squad during the winter break. the only way that can happen would be to sell players but considering the lack of quality in the squad overall, the youth academy of the club would have to be improved massively to make sure that youngsters can come through to the first team and do a job there. Going back to finances, it really isn't looking that bright for Parma right now:

View attachment 122834
Despite being at a high earlier in the season, Parma's financial situation has been deteriorating massively and they're already half a million euros in debt. It's getting worse and worse by the minute so either the board at Parma or Cannavaro himself are going to have to do a lot of work to get the club back in a healthy financial position because otherwise they could risk going bankrupt again and going all the way back down to the Italian 4th tier where they were last season.

With plenty of negative things to talk about, Cannavaro will still be pretty happy about the fact that he and his team are getting a lot of support on social media, even though there are some haters out there who don't think that their club are capable of getting promotion this season:

View attachment 122833
Again, luckily for Cannavaro, Jallow will be out throughout the winter break but should be back for their first league back of 2017, so no need to worry so much for Parma fans either! Anyways' that's going to be it for our team report on Parma so far this season, hopefully it was a good one and we can't wait to update you more on Parma's progress for the rest of this season where hopefully for them they'll have a good end to the season and can go all the way back to the Serie A! Thank you for reading and see you soon on Eurosport.

Parma get first league win in over a month and a half

View attachment 122780
After a very tough month in December and a disappointing winter break, Parma have finally gone back to winning ways following a 2-0 win against Forli FC in matchday 23 of the Lega Pro Girone B. With just 15 games left in the league now, Parma are still looking in control and seem like they really could be getting promoted to the Serie B this season, putting them just one division under the Italian top tier. Below we will take a look at Parma's winter break as well as their last 3 games of the month which also featured one game in the Coppa Italia Lega Pro.

With 3 losses from their 3 games, many fans were worried than morale would be low in the Parma dressing room following a very disappointing month in December and now 3 losses in 3 games. Their match against Anderlecht was definitely impressive considering they had a lot more chances and also a lot more possession but they still got a loss which was worrying. Did Cannavaro's men manage to pull it back in the cup and in the league?
They certainly have! The draw against Reggiana was, as said by manager Cannavaro, tough to take but in the end they still managed to qualify for the semi-final of the Coppa Italia Lega Pro and also got their first league win in a while which must have been a relief for everyone involved at Parma FC. Can they take this form into next month now and secure a promotion spot to the Serie B before the season even ends? That task will have been made very tough following a couple of long-term injuries for some key players at the club:
With 4 key players now out for as much as 3 months and as little as 2 weeks, Parma will need to find a way to deal with those injuries and get good results against teams who are mostly in the second half of the table, luckily for them. We'll come back here again at the end of February, once Parma has played all these teams to see how they've done.

League-winning form for Parma who step closer and closer to Serie B promotion

Parma, who were under a bit of pressure following a pretty disappointing month in December, managed to get back into good form at the end of January and this month, they absolutely crushed the league. With 3 wins from 4 league games and a spot in the Coppa Italia Lega Pro final, everything's going very well for Cannavaro's men who are stepping closer and closer to Serie B promotion. The real question is, did Parma improve on how they were doing back in late 2016? Well. Financially, they're still struggling a lot and now find themselves 1.2 million euros in debt, which isn't good for them. On the actual sport aspect of things though, a chance to win 2 trophies this season and an attack still as efficient as ever is something they can be proud of.

With March coming up rather quickly now, we take a look at some of the fixtures they took part in this month in detail and look ahead at their 4 upcoming fixtures:

This two-leg tie was definitely the two matches to remember for Parma this month with a pretty bad first leg but an absolutely dominant display in the second leg which got them to the Coppa Italia Lega Pro final with the first leg of that match coming up in early March.

View attachment 122742
Definitely a highlight of Parma's month too which showcased their attacking power as they scored the two goals that gifted them the win in just 2 minutes, the first two minutes of the match. That game also got them 6 points clear at the top of the league with just 11 matches to spare.

Looks like the double is on, that'd be some first season!

Parma lead two-horse race for Lega Pro Girone B title

After an unbeaten month in February, Parma fans were a little bit worried with their team's form in March until the win against Pordenone but Cannavaro's side still managed to grab a win and stay at the top of the league, where they've been since matchday 24 as they had suffered a dip in form which saw them sit in second place for matchdays 22 and 23 but they were top of the league for over 3 months before that. Up next, a review of each game they played in in March and a little preview of a VERY heavy month in April.

View attachment 122694
It was a match to forget about for Cannavaro, the Parma players and the fans considering how terrible of a performance this was for them. After going 1-0 up very early on, they conceded two goals and lost their advantage and the task of making a comeback became even harder after Jallow came off through injury and Parma had already made all their substitutions, meaning they had to play with 10 men. Simone Battaglia was the player of the match in what was an amazing performace by Ancona which they'll be very proud of.

Both of Parma's draws this month came under the same category: games that could have gone either way. Nothing much to talk about for both these games other than it cost them some serious points ahead of their last sprint to attempt and win the league title and get automatic promotion to the Serie B for next season. In both games they managed to mount a comeback and score the equaliser either right after or some time after the opposition's goal but the fans were really not happy with some of these performances.

View attachment 122689
A fantastic, easy win for Cannavaro's men. Once again, they went a goal down pretty early on but managed to mount a comeback and scored 3 goals on the trot, gifting them 3 points to put them 4 points clear at the top of the league with 7 games left. Good possession, a lot more shots than Pordenone, and a good performance overall, especially from Scavone who finally put in a really good performance this season for Parma.

View attachment 122688
Still a lot of goals scored for Parma but 37 goals conceded in 31 games seems like a bit much for a league leader so they're definitely going to need to improve on that for this last push for promotion if they really want to secure a place in the Italian second tier for next season. Here's their schedule for April and the first week of May and let me tell you, it's a heavy one!

View attachment 122686
With 7 league games and two games in the Coppa Italia Lega Pro, that makes it 9 games in just 5 weeks in what will definitely be a very busy and tough last month in the 2016/17 season. The two opponents that could really cause Parma problems will be AlbinoLeffe and Bassano but they really can't take any other teams for granted if they want to make sure that they keep that 4-point advantage over FeralpiSalò until the season ends. This whole month will also not be made easier by two key injuries for Cannavaro's side which means he'll have to once again find a way to deal with some big players being out. Will Parma do it? Are they really on their way back to the Serie A and to continental glory? Tune in early May to find out how things went for Fabio Cannavaro and his lads!

Well how about that for a first season at Parma! Cannavaro did the impossible at his old club and managed to win two trophies in his first season to bring them back in the Italian second division, potentially putting them just a year away from the Italian top tier, where they were not too long ago. On top of that, Parma have now set a new point record for the club in the Lega Pro Girone B and have equalled the point record for that league too. With 5 wins from 7 games in the league, they finished top comfortably by 6 points, which is amazing news for Parma fans.

Overall, it's been one **** of a season for Parma and their fans and Cannavaro, and we really can't wait to see how far they can go with their team. With a debt of 1.8 million euros and an ageing squad as well as a couple of players who declined their contract renewal talks, Cannavaro is for sure going to have a lot of work to do during the pre-season to get ready for the 2017/18 season where he'll face the likes of Empoli, Sampdoria and Pescara, who look like the most likely teams to get relegated from the Serie A. Can we expect a lot from Parma next season in Serie B? Maybe not straight away. With not a lot of depth in their squad and a lot of debt, they're just going to have to work with some of their youngsters as well as the other old players without really being able to bring in a lot of quality players. Perhaps they could bring in some lads on loan but other than that, it seems like Parma will probably finish somewhere in mid-table next year in the Italian second tier.

Superb work to get the first job done in the first season, now to see how it goes second season!

Really excited to see them in the Serie B already yeah! Can't wait for the Serie A now ;)

A great start my friend keep it up !
Cheers mate! :)

Parma finish their second pre-season under Cannavaro with just 2 losses and get ready for Empoli clash on opening day

View attachment 122476

With two losses, one draw and two wins in their pre-season, Parma are looking ready for their Serie B debut under the new club name Parma Calcio 1913. Cannavaro scheduled some big games against Monaco, Marseille and Nice and even though those 3 games were their worst results all pre-season, they still impressed with their performances and did really well against the likes of Sampdoria and Chievo Verona as a result. With 2 wins in the TIM Cup qualifying rounds as well, Parma now find themselves in the last qualifying round before getting into the proper stages of the competition, which should be good news for Parma fans too. Parma's new signings also performed pretty well during the pre-season as Cannavaro broke the club's transfer record TWICE during the transfer window;

View attachment 122475
View attachment 122474
Those two signings were the only signings that actually cost Parma money and with 185 000 euros spent despite the debt that Parma already have, Viotti and De Cenco look like the kind of players who could really help Parma firstly sell some shirts but also get a lot of points which could be crucial in a season that will definitely be a very tough one for Parma.

View attachment 122473
Predicted to finish 21st and therefore getting relegated back to the 3rd tier of Italian football, Cannavaro is going to need to do REALLY well if he wants to get his side in promotion spots and try to get back in the Serie A at the end of this season. However, although we trust the media in terms of prediction, Leicester won the Premier League two years ago with similar odds so we don't see why Parma can't upset everyone and maybe win the Serie B! Slight problem though, injuries:

View attachment 122471
View attachment 122469
Canini was one of the best players for Parma last season and he's already gotten injured which isn't good news for Cannavaro and his side, who will have to just cope with his absence for at least the first league match of the season. Manuel Marras is a new player with the team and got injured early on in the pre-season and managed to come back for their last pre-season match and score the goal that would get Parma a draw against Nice. He's now back with the team obviously but some fans are a bit worried that he could be quite injury prone; considering the club got him on a free though, I don't think it's such a problem if he doesn't do so well in his first season. Speaking of players who signed on free transfers:

View attachment 122468
View attachment 122467
View attachment 122466
All three of these players came in mostly as backups but also to make up for the couple of players who left on free transfers following their contract expiries. Alessandro Bruno is one of the better midfielders at Parma purely due to his experience but Parma fans should be quite excited about his role at the club this season and see how well he does. Marras and Marchi are a bit younger but once again are coming in as backups for the likes of Jallow and Scavone in case of injuries, which have been very common at the club since the start of last season.
With Parma's opening league game against former Serie A side Empoli in about a week, Cannavaro has been talking about the training regime at the club and how he thinks they'll do against such a big side:

We had a great pre-season overall considering we faced up against some Ligue 1 sides who do well in their division usually so it's been quite positive in the dressing room so far and we've done well in the TIM Cup too so we're going into this game feeling quite confident but not to the point where we think we'll definitely win the game. Empoli are a strong side and we're definitely going to have to work hard on the pitch on the day to get the 3 points, which would be massive for our first game in the Serie B. In training we've already been working really hard and making sure that we work on areas we didn't really do so well in last season but also just on general aspects of the game, because for all we know we had a best defence last year but this year we're going to have one of the best defences in the league. We just can't know any of that yet without having played a game so we're just focusing on the basics and making sure we get those right before practicing more specific things.

Cannavaro does seem quite confident and it looks like he and his lads are definitely ready for this upcoming season and the big test that will be this Empoli game so until then we'd like to thank you for reading and we'll see you again when Parma have faced Empoli on the 26th of August 2017!

Great job getting promoted, now the real work will begin... still I have faith that you'll manage!
