August 2020

With a serious lack of funds available to us, I’ve really had to work the loan market this Summer and hope the youngsters I’m bringing in can do a good job for us. The latest to join is Gregor Preston, an 18 year old English central midfielder, from Arsenal. He looks like one of the most exciting prospects from all the lads I’ve brought in and I’m intrigued to see what he can do for us. Preston’s only competitive experience to date was a loan spell at Southend last season where he made 8 appearances in League One.

We’ve been handed a really tough draw in the Checkatrade Trophy Group Stage. Not only do we take on two sides from League One, but the current holders Chelsea U23s are also in our group!!

I’m very pleased to report that we haven’t lost any first team players over the Summer and here is the squad for the upcoming season as it currently stands.

Saturday 8th August 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Accrington Stanley (Home)

Kick-Off: 12:45
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies (Pask 71), Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Whitfield, Bailey (Preston 73), Hornby, Honesty (Ahearne-Grant 64)

Perfect way to start the season. A solid home win against a side that did well last year and just missed out on the playoffs. The defence was solid and earned their clean sheet well. Ben Whitfield had a dream debut scoring two first half goals. All in all, I walk away from the opening day of the season a very happy man!

A number of players made their debuts in the Accrington game including Josh Pask, Odin Bailey, Gregor Preston and Roarie Honesty. However, it was Ben Whitfield who stole the show with a superb man of the match performance.

Season ticket sales a very slightly down on last season. I wouldn’t expect it to rise until we are promoted.

Tuesday 11th August 2020
Carabao Cup 1st Round: Wolves (Away)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Whitfield (Preston 71), Bailey (Wright 83), Hornby (Ahearne-Grant 71), Honesty

My first ever taste of the Carabao Cup….and it’s a ****** sweet one! What a fantastic performance from my boys to pull off a massive upset and beat one of the biggest teams outside of the Premier League and on their own turf. Now we’ll have a home draw against a Premiership side in the next round please!

Josh Wright was introduced in the 83rd minute against Wolves to make his debut for the club.

View attachment 50533

Well we got a Premier League side in the Carabao Cup 2nd round draw as we wanted, as we are drawn against Brighton & Hove Albion. However, it wasn’t the home draw we was after and we’ll face another tough away day.

Saturday 15th August 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Oxford United (Away)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis (Pask 71), Davies, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Whitfield, Bailey (Preston 78), Hornby (Ahearne-Grant 61), Honesty

View attachment 50531

Absolutely gutted to lose this one as we really didn’t deserve it. We played some beautiful football at times and the lads seem to be getting more comfortable with the new formation. Oxford’s two goals were good though….a well worked corner and a cracker from outside the box and they definitely look like a team to be reckoned with this year, which most would probably expect with them having been relegated from League One last season.

I mentioned the formation in my last game analysis and now I’ll show it to you. I have to admit I am quickly falling in love with it as it has everything. It initially looks very defensive but it’s actually deceivingly attacking. It is based on a solid defence with 3 at the back and a defensive midfielder….but this allows both wing backs to get far up the pitch and both of the central midfielders to go forward with plenty of freedom without having to worry about covering back. Although being defensively strong, it still allows for two strikers up front as well. The player roles change depending on who’s playing as I like to play players in their strongest role if I can, rather than a role I want them to play……I generally find better partnerships between players/roles as the season goes on…..not all are compatible. Also, team mentality, shape and instructions are changed depending on the team we are playing and if we are away/home. Anyway, this is my latest creation so thought I’d share.

View attachment 50530

I still had no backup goalkeeper this season and have had a 16 year old on the bench for the past 3 games. I’m pretty happy with Lee Burge as my number 1, and have now added 21 year old Jared Thompson to the ranks as my number 2. Thompson, from Northern Ireland, has 8 U21 caps to his name and has been playing youth/reserve football at Chelsea and West Ham for the past few seasons. In amongst that, he did have a year on loan with Chippenham, where he made 40 appearance in the Vanarama National South….and he only conceded 28 goals in those 40 games!

Saturday 22nd August 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Barnet (Home)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes (Wright 45), Whitfield, Bailey, Ahearne-Grant, Honesty

View attachment 50527

What an incredible first half display the way from the lads as we raced to a 4-0 lead inside 29 minutes. The game was won and I can’t really fault the team for taking it easy in the 2nd half. Young Roarie Honesty is looking like a potential gem if he keeps up this goalscoring form for the rest of the season.

Wednesday 26th August 2020
Carabao Cup 2nd Round: Brighton & Hove Albion (Away)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes (Donohue 59), Whitfield (Preston 80), Bailey, Ahearne-Grant, Honesty (Hornby 59)

View attachment 50526

For the first time in my career, I faced Premier League opposition, and it got off to an absolute flyer as we took an unexpected lead inside the opening 5 minutes! From that 5th minute, I expected the inevitable barrage of attacks on our goal….but they never really came. It then looked like the referee had taken pity on them when he awarded an extremely soft penalty in the 59th minute. And when Lee Burge saved it, I thought ‘hang on a minute, this could be our day’! However, the attacks from Brighton became predictably more intense in the final 15 minutes and they were back on level terms with 10 minutes to go. A shout of encouragement from the sidelines spurred my boys on to hold on and take the game to extra time. ‘I’d take a penalty shootout all day long’ I thought! I found myself counting down the minutes in the final stages of extra time, already picking out my penalty takers in my head…..and it finally came….the final whistle. We’d taken them to penalties! My pride in my team at this point was bursting for all to see….now it just remained to be seen if we could hold our nerve in front of the Brighton crowd and knock the Premiership side out of the competition. And we came so very close, just 1 penalty away close in fact! After 4 perfect penalties, Jack Grimmer just had to put it away for us to win the game, but his shot was straight down the middle of the goal at the Brighton keeper who made an easy save. Brighton went on to win the shootout and we are defeated….but I’m not going to lay into any single one of these lads….they were f*cking brilliant!

Saturday 29th August 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Hartlepool (Away)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer, Kasim, Haynes, Whitfield (Wright 75), Preston, Hornby (Ponticelli 59), Honesty

View attachment 50525

Oh the irony…..after going out of the cup on penalties in the last game, it’s a penalty which gets us all 3 points here against a resolute Hartlepool side.

Winger Jodi Jones just didn’t fit into my plans, so when Blackburn came calling on transfer deadline day I was keen to negotiate a deal to move him on. I’m ****** delighted with the outcome after Blackburn initially offered £200k for him, I managed to get them all the way up to £450k up front with the fee potentially rising to over £500k!

View attachment 50524

Which brings the club finances out of the red for the first time since I arrived, and even gives me £112k to spend.

View attachment 50523

With three wins from four games in the league, we’re right up with the pace, currently sitting 3rd. Port Vale lead the way as the only team with a 100% record.

September 2020

Tuesday 1st September 2020
Checkatrade Trophy Group Stage: Chelsea U23s (Home)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Pask, Goode, Grimmer (Kelly-Evans 45), Grant, Haynes (Donohue 45), Bailey (Wright 45), Preston, Ahearne-Grant, Honesty

View attachment 50379

My first ever taste of Checkatrade Trophy action would be against Premier League opposition again….well, kind of! It was time to take on Chelsea’s youngsters and test ourselves against some of the potential stars of English football, in front of a pretty empty stadium of only 1000 fans. It didn’t take long for Roarie Honesty to stamp his mark on the game against his parent club, only 1 minute and 10 seconds in fact before he found the back of the net with a close range effort. That early goal set the tone for the remainder of the game as we went on to give our young opponents a proper lesson giving the current competition holders a thorough 5-0 thrashing!

Saturday 5th September 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Crawley (Home)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Bailey (Whitfield 66), Preston, Ahearne-Grant (Ponticelli 66), Honesty

View attachment 50378

And that’s why I have my players close down the opposition! The winning goal here had a bit of good fortune about it as Roarie Honesty chased down the Crawley keeper and as he went to make a clearance, the ball hit Honesty and bounced off him into the back of the net. Although it was a fortuitous goal, the result was not undeserved as we were the better team by some way.

Saturday 12th September 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Billericay Town (Away)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes (Donohue 71), Bailey (Whitfield 59), Preston (Wright 59), Ahearne-Grant, Honesty

View attachment 50377

You simply can’t ignore the rise through the leagues that Billericay Town have made, having secured three straight promotions and now finding themselves in the football league for the first time. And they proved to be a very stern test for us here as we laboured to a 0-0 draw. They say goalkeepers win you points, and our point in this game can go down to goalkeeper Lee Burge who pulled off not one but two fantastic penalty saves in the 59th and 95th minutes! Top lad!

Tuesday 15th September 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Cheltenham (Home)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode (Pask 65), Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Bailey, Whitfield (Preston 65), Ahearne-Grant (Hornby 77), Honesty

View attachment 50376

Cheltenham will do well to survive this league if they play like they did here all season. They were truly awful as we recorded a comprehensive home win with all three strikers getting in on the act. Roarie Honesty really does look like an impressive young talent as he takes his tally to 8 goals in 10 games this season.

Saturday 19th September 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Wycombe (Away)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes (Donohue 83), Bailey (Wright 62), Preston, Ahearne-Grant, Honesty (Hornby 62)

View attachment 50375

Wycombe came into this game on the back of a four game unbeaten run and were sitting just inside the playoff spots. Despite that though, we managed to secure a good away win. Karlan Ahearne-Grant took the spotlight off Roarie Honesty today as he managed to star with 2 goals of his own.

The media comment on my good start as Coventry manager. However, as pre season favourites for the title, I’m not sure why they’ve described us as surprise promotion contenders. This reporter needs to do his homework before putting pen to paper.

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode (Pask 66), Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Preston, Bailey, Ahearne-Grant (Hornby 66), Honesty

View attachment 50371

For a long time it didn’t look like we was going to get the result here! We were the most dominant we have been in a game all season, but just could not find the back of the net. That was, until Fraser Hornby came off the bench to score us a winner and we finally took away the most deserved 3 points we’ve won this campaign.

Tuesday 29th September 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Rochdale (Away)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies (Pask 72), Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Preston, Bailey (Whitfield 62), Ahearne-Grant (Hornby 62), Honesty

View attachment 50370

It was a case of top vs bottom as we took on Rochdale, who were still looking for their first win of the season coming into this game. And they never looked like getting it here as we battered them. A couple of lapses in concentration in the 2nd half allowed them to get a couple back, but it was all over by half time really.

We are top of the league, say we are top of the league! An unbeaten month sees us shoot to the top and 3 points clear. Tranmere are the complete surprise package so far as they sit behind us in second despite pre season predictions of a relegation battle for them! At the bottom, Rochdale are seen to be hugely underachieving after being tipped for a top half finish.

October 2020

Sunday 4th October 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Port Vale (Home)

Kick-Off: 16:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode (Pask 68), Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Bailey (Whitfield 59), Preston, Ahearne-Grant, Honesty (Ponticelli 73)

View attachment 50263

I was expecting a really tough game here against Vale who were 3rd in the league at kick off. But it didn’t turn out that way at all and in fact this turned out to be one of our easiest games of the season so far. 4-0 up and cruising at half time and the only thing I had to do was keep the players focused for the 2nd half. We definitely did step off the gas a little but kept it together enough to only concede one goal, despite increased pressure from Vale and saw the game out recording a very comfortable win.

Tuesday 6th October 2020
Checkatrade Trophy Group Stage: Portsmouth (Home)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Thompson, Willis, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Whitfield, Preston (Wright 54), Hornby, Honesty (Ahearne-Grant 54)

View attachment 50262

With only two days between games, some rotation was essential with some fatigue amongst the players. Thompson, Pask, Whitfield and Hornby all entered the frame and were given an opportunity to impress. All the players impressed on their way to an excellent win against our League One opponents, but it was Josh Pask at centre back who really stood out. This win ensures we qualify from the group stage with a game against Bristol Rovers to spare.

I used the Portsmouth game as an opportunity to give Jared Thompson his debut in between the sticks. The Checkatrade is not an important competition for us this year, so I have used it to rotate the side a little and will continue to do so all the time we are in it.

View attachment 50261

Top goalscorer Roarie Honesty will miss 3 weeks of action due to injury. Hopefully, Ahearne-Grant and Hornby can get some goals in his absence and keep us on track.

Saturday 10th October 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Walsall (Away)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis (Davies 66), Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Donohue, Bailey, Preston (Wright 66), Ahearne-Grant, Ponticelli

View attachment 50259

Now I’m not usually one for making excuses when we don’t get the result we wanted but for this game I’m going to break that rule. We managed a draw away at Walsall which is respectable enough but I really wanted a win if I’m honest….however, I can forgive the team as we were missing the likes of Haynes, Whitfield and Honesty all through injury or suspension. In any game, if you lose 2 or 3 of your best players, it’s bound to effect the team.

Saturday 17th October 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Morecambe (Home)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Whitfield, Preston, Ahearne-Grant, Hornby

View attachment 50258

Who needs Honesty? By that, I’m not encouraging anyone to lie….I’m simply talking about the fact that our two strikers stepped up in Roarie Honesty’s absence here and banged in a goal a piece on our way to a comfortable home win.

We were handed what should be a relatively easy draw in the 1st round of the FA Cup. Salford City are 2 leagues below us and we should be looking at progressing with no real problems here. However, we won’t be taking them for granted as we have one clear target in the FA Cup this season…..make round 3 or 4 and get a home draw against a big Premier League club to bring the money in!

View attachment 50257

Tuesday 20th October 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Tranmere Rovers (Away)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Pask (Davies 68), Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Whitfield (Bailey 68), Preston (Wright 82), Ahearne-Grant, Hornby

View attachment 50256

Top of the table clash as 1st take on 2nd in the league….and it’s us who came out on top and to be honest, the 3-2 scoreline flattered Tranmere as they were actually quite poor and they slipped down to 4th with defeat. Fraser Hornby demonstrated some clinical finishing for us in this one as he completed a hat trick in the 94th minute.

Saturday 24th October 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Notts County (Home)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Whitfield (Bailey 66), Preston, Ahearne-Grant (Honesty 66), Hornby

View attachment 50255

He’s back!! Roarie Honesty returns from injury, comes off the bench and bags the goal which ensures we finish the month unbeaten.

Will Grigg’s on fire!!! Or at least I ****** hope he will be as we sign the striker that has been such a huge part of Wigan’s success over the past 5 years, on a free transfer after The Latics let him go at the end of the last campaign. I’m looking forward to hearing that chant around the stadium every time he scores for us this season!

Excellent form in the league this month means that we stay top of the division and extend our lead to 6 points and we have a game in hand too.

In the Checkatrade Trophy, we have already secured qualification from the group stage with a game to spare. It will give me a chance to play some of the fringe players in the final game against Bristol Rovers.

Yeovil have struggled so far this season and find themselves in the bottom 3, so I was expecting a pretty comfortable victory…..and my boys duly delivered.

It was written in the stars for Will Grigg to come off the bench and score a debut goal, in the Yeovil game. Come on….you all know the song by now!

View attachment 50123

For the first time in a long time, our opponents were actually the better side than us in this game. I have to hold my hands up and admit that Peterborough fully deserved their win as they bring an end to our 15 game unbeaten run (in all competitions).

Goalkeeper Jared Thompson is about to get a run in the first team as Lee Burge will miss a month after picking up a fractured wrist in the Peterborough game.

View attachment 50122

For the first time since taking over at Coventry, I am linked with another job. It was the Sunderland job, who currently sit 22nd in the Championship. No thanks! I’m actually loving life here at Coventry and have no interest in leaving anytime soon!

FA Cup 1st Round: Salford City (Home)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Thompson, Willis, Davies, Goode, Kelly-Evans, Batty, Donohue, Bailey (Whitfield 45), Wright, Grigg (Honesty 45), Ahearne-Grant

View attachment 50120

I did rotate the squad slightly for this one, but still kept a pretty strong side out there as I want to progress in the FA Cup and hopefully get a big home draw against one of the big sides. Playing a strong team proved the right thing to do as we went on to beat our non-league opponents by a comfortable margin, although the second half performance did leave something to be desired. Will Grigg was the star man in this one as he boosted his confidence with a cracking 1st half hat trick.

We’ll play fellow League 2 side Morecambe in the 2nd round of the FA Cup. With the home advantage, we have a good opportunity to make the 3rd round where the big boys enter the competition.

Tuesday 10th November 2020
Checkatrade Trophy Group Stage: Bristol Rovers (Away)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Thompson, Endall, Davies, Goode, Kelly-Evans, Kasim, Donohue, Whitfield, Wright, Grigg (Honesty 45), Ponticelli

View attachment 50118

This game had no significance for me at all as we’d already qualified from the group, so I took the opportunity to keep some of the fringe players in and rotate the others as well. I was prepared to take the loss, in favour of giving some game time to some different players. But I didn’t have to as the boys turned in a strong defensive performance and a single goal from young striker Jordan Ponticelli was enough to ensure we top the group with 3 wins from 3 games.

And there’s the final group! Although it’s a bit of a Mickey Mouse cup, it’s still a fantastic achievement to top what was initially seen as a very tough group!

I was expecting a good performance here after a number of my first team regulars had been rested over the last couple of games, so should come in fresh for this! Now to be honest, it wasn’t the most inspiring display from us, but with a sturdy defence again, we held on for another win. That was despite having to play the final 25 minutes with 10 men after Jack Grimmer’s sending off.

The draw for the 2nd round of the Checkatrade Trophy Southern Section was made and we’ve been handed a home tie against another Premier League U23s side….this time we’ll take on Swansea’s youngsters.

View attachment 50114

Back to back games against two clubs who had previously rejected me for their management job…..I bet they both regret that decision now they see what I’m doing at Coventry! Will Grigg has already made a pretty big impact since arriving at the club just under a month ago and he asserted himself again here as he came off the bench to grab us a winning goal as we extend our winning streak to 4 games (since the Peterborough game).

Tuesday 24th November 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Plymouth Argyle (Away)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Thompson, Willis, Pask, Goode, Kelly-Evans, Batty, Haynes, Bailey (Wright 63), Whitfield, Ahearne-Grant, Grigg (Honesty 63)

View attachment 50113

We took on Plymouth right after they had sacked Nigel Adkins as manager and were coming off the back of a 5-0 thrashing against Wycombe, so to say they were a team in turmoil would be an understatement. And we piled on the misery for the South West club who are quickly falling down the league table game by game. I don’t envy the new manager’s job there!

When Grimsby scored a 70th minute goal to take the lead, it looked like a shock defeat was on the cards. That was, until an inspired substitution led to our equalizer. In a bid to get men forward, Josh Wright was brought on for centre back Jordan Willis, allowing me to push Ben Whitfield further forward. Within a minute of making the change, Whitfield found himself clean through and slotted past the Grimsby keeper to level things up and earn us a deserved point.

I notice that Chelmsford have already sacked my replacement, Andy Morrell, after only 236 days in charge. The club currently sit 8th in the Vanarama National South.

At the end of November, our lead at the top of League Two is now 12 points! Things are looking good. December will offer up a mix of league and cup games as we play our 2nd round games in both the FA Cup and Checkatrade Trophy. Amongst that, we have 5 league games coming up too, including tough matches against Bury and Oxford United who are currently 3rd and 4th in the division.

December 2020

Wednesday 2nd December 2020
FA Cup 2nd Round: Morecambe (Home)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Whitfield, Preston (Wright 70), Ahearne-Grant (Grigg 70), Hornby

View attachment 50032

We just about scrape through to the 3rd round by the skin of our teeths. I have to put this result down to my defence again, who have been nothing short of fantastic so far this season!

Saturday 5th December 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Bury (Home)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes (Donohue 79), Whitfield (Wright 79), Preston, Ahearne-Grant (Grigg 79), Honesty

After racing into a 3-1 lead in the early stages of the 2nd half, I’d have been disappointed to drop points here. But it looked like we would have to settle for a draw after Bury (to their credit) fought back and got themselves on level terms! However, that’s when we introduced the force that is Will Grigg up front. His introduction seemed to spur the team on and the lads ramped it up a gear! Grigg bagged two goals and we take a massive 3 points against a side currently in the top 4!

Not the draw we wanted in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. Firstly, we got an away draw which is no good to us financially and second we play a big Championship club in Derby County, which could see our exit from the competition before we get the opportunity to make any real big money.

Tuesday 8th December 2020
Checkatrade Trophy Southern Section 2nd Round: Swansea U23s (Home)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Thompson, Willis, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Donohue, Whitfield, Wright, Hornby, Honesty

View attachment 50024

Again the squad was rotated for the Mickey Mouse Cup and again they come up trumps as we knock Swansea’s youngsters out of the competition. Fraser ***** steps into the starting lineup and proves his worth with 2 goals!

And it’s the top two sides in League Two who will meet in the Southern Section Quarter Finals as we take on Oxford United.

Saturday 12th December 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Eastleigh (Away)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode (Pask 74), Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Whitfield, Preston, Ahearne-Grant, Hornby (Grigg 74)

View attachment 50022

My strikers seem to be taking it in turns to have their day in the spotlight and in the Eastleigh game, it was the turn of Karlan Ahearne-Grant who score a goal in either half to put us firmly in control of this one. From there we went on to hit the back of the net again through Ben Whitfield and it was game over, before Eastleigh got a late consolation.

20 year old centre back Josh Endall has gone out on loan to Welling for the remainder of the season. I think he has some potential so I wanted to let him game some game time under his belt and will monitor his progress.

A close game between two well matched teams on the day. A draw was probably a fair result.

Saturday 26th December 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Oxford United (Home)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Pask, Goode (Davies 77), Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Whitfield, Preston, Grigg (Hornby 59), Honesty (Ahearne-Grant 59)

What a game for Boxing Day….a top of the table clash between 1st and 2nd in the league. Oxford had beaten us earlier in the season, but we got our revenge here! We were absolutely brilliant against arguably one of the best sides in this league and deserved the 3 points we walked away with!

Ryan Haynes will miss the first couple of weeks in the New Year with an injury he picked up in the Oxford game.

View attachment 50017

Monday 28th December 2020
Sky Bet League Two: Hartlepool (Home)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Davies, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Donohue, Bailey, Wright, Ahearne-Grant, Honesty

View attachment 50016

With only 2 days between games I had to make a number of changes as there was some tiredness amongst the team. It did disrupt the fluency a little and we certainly weren’t at our best in this game. However, we still managed to get over the line with a narrow 1-0 win and it’s picking up points in the games where you don’t play very well that wins you titles!

After an unbeaten month, we have stretched our lead at the top of the table to a massive 15 points now, with Peterborough and Oxford United leading the chasing pack. More importantly, we are a good 18 points clear in the automatic promotion places and things are looking rosy as we go into 2021.

One thing I notice immediately this season is that the schedule for the clubs is pretty full on all year round and next month is no different with the games coming thick and fast again. Seven games lined up in total which include outings in the FA Cup and Checkatrade Trophy.

January 2021

Saturday 2nd January 2021
Sky Bet League Two: Barnet (Away)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Donohue, Whitfield (Bailey 59), Wright (Preston 59), Ahearne-Grant (Grigg 59), Honesty

I’d love to say that we started 2021 in spectacular fashion, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case as we struggled to a disappointing draw with 21st placed Barnet.

A little Brucie Bonus for me at the start of the year as the Coventry board reward me with a new contract. A pay rise to £875 and I’m closing in on that £1,000 per week milestone.

Tuesday 5th January 2021
Sky Bet League Two: Crawley (Away)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer, Batty (Wright 72), Donohue, Whitfield, Preston (Bailey 72), Ahearne-Grant (Grigg 72), Honesty

View attachment 49976

Crawley are having a decent season, sitting 6th and amongst the playoff spots, so this was not expected to be an easy game. And the first half really wasn’t easy at all! Now the 2nd half, that was a different story altogether as Crawley never really came out of the changing room and put up no sort of fight as we simply walked all over them scoring three goals and recording a very good result in the process.

Yaser Kasim is a player that has barley featured for me this season….in fact he has only played once in the league. So when Portsmouth came in for him, it was a no brainer for me to let him go. The central midfielder moves on for an initial fee of £58k, which could rise to £89k with all the add ons.

Saturday 9th January 2021
FA Cup 3rd Round: Derby County (Away)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer (Kelly-Evans 76), Batty, Donohue, Whitfield, Preston (Wright 90), Hornby, Honesty (Grigg 76)

When your confidence is high, anything is possible….and we proved that here as we knocked out Championship side Derby! It only took 22 minutes for us to get ourselves 3-0 in front and put our travelling fans into a state of disbelief….one things for sure, they had a good day out today! Obviously, when you go 3-0 up against a much bigger side, you expect the inevitable reaction and increased pressure and Derby didn’t disappoint as they turned on the style. However, for them it was just too little, too late as they only managed to get 2 goals back in the remaining 68 minutes of football and we held on to secure our passage to the 4th round. Now, please reward us with a big prem club at home…..PLEASE!

Get in there!! Exactly what we were after….a home draw against Premier League giants Arsenal! That should pack out the Ricoh Arena and bring with it a financial boost to the club!

Checkatrade Trophy Southern Section 3rd Round: Oxford United (Away)

Lineup: Thompson, Willis (Davies 70), Pask, Goode, Kelly-Evans, Batty, Haynes, Bailey, Preston (Wright 70), Hornby, Honesty

View attachment 49972

Progress in two cups in 4 days. We are flying high at the moment. Now I have to admit that the further we go in the competition, the more my interest in it is becoming. I’m at the stage where I think we can actually go on and win this thing now!

Saturday 16th January 2021
Sky Bet League Two: Billericay Town (Home)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Donohue (Haynes 58), Bailey, Preston, Hornby (Grigg 58), Honesty

View attachment 49971

This was one of the most dominant performances we have given all season, but we still very nearly didn’t get the result. Billericay got a lucky break at the end of the first half with pretty much their first attack of the game, when Jack Grimmer turned the ball into our own net. It took us until the 71st minute to finally get back level, and then within 3 minutes of that we were in front! A good second half turnaround and we take another 3 points!

As we prepare to take on Arsenal at the end of the month in the FA Cup, we find out that we’ll take on the Arsenal youngsters in the next round of the Checkatrade Trophy too.

Sky Bet League Two: Cheltenham (Away)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Davies, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty (Wright 45), Donohue (Haynes 45), Whitfield, Preston, Ahearne-Grant, Honesty (Grigg 76)

View attachment 49969

I wonder if my lads have one eye on the FA Cup game with Arsenal in midweek as they didn’t really show up for this one. Cheltenham walk away with a valuable draw against the runaway league leaders. They will be wondering how they didn’t win the game though, having missed 3 clear cut chances.

That’s what I wanted to see….the Arsenal game will be almost a complete sell out with over 31,000 tickets sold.

Wednesday 27th January 2021
FA Cup 4th Round: Arsenal (Home)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Burge, Willis, Davies, Goode, Grimmer (Kelly-Evans 85), Batty, Haynes, Whitfield (Bailey 85), Wright, Hornby, Honesty (Grigg 45)

View attachment 49967

Considering most people were expecting us to be on the end of a big defeat here, we actually didn’t too bad and only went down 1-0. Yes Arsenal were the much better side throughout and created a lot more chances than us, but that was to be expected. But the lads did well today and deserve credit for the performance they gave. Anyway, that’s job done in the FA Cup….the pre season aim was get as far as we can to get a big home tie and bag some money and that’s exactly what we’ve done!

Saturday 30th January 2021
Sky Bet League Two: Wycombe (Home)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Davies, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Bailey, Preston, Ahearne-Grant (Grigg 63), Hornby

View attachment 49966

Back to league action and straight back to winning ways as we beat playoff hopefuls Wycombe Wanderers. Fraser Hornby was red hot in that first half and bagged a 3 minute hat trick from the 26th to the 29th minute, which pretty much put the game out of Wycombe’s reach from there on. They managed to get one back but were never close to getting anything out of this one.

Still 15 points clear at the end of January and we edge closer and closer to that title. We are now a massive 23 points clear of the automatic promotion places and that looks nailed on barring a complete and utter disaster in the final 15 games.

Don't want to jinx it but looks like the league is pretty much wrapped up, how much more money did you make with that FA Cup run?

The Arsenal game brought in an extra £450k gate receipts than in a normal month! However, because the club hemirages money every month, all it really did was get us just out of the minus figures on the bank balance. We are currently paying back £196k every month on loans and that is killing us at the minute. Average attendance at home is just over 9,000 in a league game, which isn't even a 3rd full!

Wednesday 3rd February 2021
Checkatrade Trophy Southern Section Quarter Final: Arsenal U23s (Away)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Thompson, Willis, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Whitfield, Preston (Bailey 69), Hornby (Ahearne-Grant 69), Honesty (Grigg 69)

View attachment 49948

Wow Arsenal must really want to win this competition as they played the likes of Lucas Romero, Granit Xhaka, Mesut Ozil and Reiss Nelson (who is sh*t hot now by the way) in this game. They duly went on to win 2-0 and were pretty dominant against us. This is exactly why fans are boycotting this competition as they don’t think it’s right to include the big club’s U23s sides in what has historically been a cup for the lower league sides to compete for. Am I bitter…..of course not ;-)

Saturday 6th February 2021
Sky Bet League Two: Cambridge United (Away)

A disappointing draw against one of the bottom sides in the league. No excuses.

We bounced back with a very easy win against struggling Rochdale, after the disappointing result against Cambridge last week!

Tuesday 16th February 2021
Sky Bet League Two: Port Vale (Away)

Kick-Off: 19:45
Lineup: Burge, Davies, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes (Donohue 59), Bailey, Preston, Hornby (Grigg 59), Honesty

View attachment 49945

I don’t know if you can call anyone title challengers when you are so far ahead in the league, but if you could I guess you’d say Port Vale were title challengers/rivals as they came into this game in 3rd position in the league. However, a strong defensive display from us and a single goal from the penalty spot was enough to beat them and Vale fell back to 5th.

And that win against Port Vale means we set a new club record for the most wins in a season….and there’s 12 games to go yet!!

View attachment 49944

Saturday 20th February 2021
Sky Bet League Two: Walsall (Home)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Davies, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty (Wright 74), Haynes (Donohue 59), Bailey, Preston, Hornby (Honesty 59), Grigg

View attachment 49943

Walsall are not having a good time of it lately as they have slipped down to 10th in the table and sacked their manager this past week. Not a good time for them to be playing the runaway leaders in the league and we took full advantage of their lack of confidence and leadership, inflicting their 14th defeat of the season on them hitting 5 goals past them in the process.

With that win over Walsall, we have guaranteed ourselves at least a playoff spot this season with 11 games remaining! However, our sights are set on much bigger things than the playoffs as we now find ourselves 18 points clear at the top of the table. Surely anything less than winning the league would be a failure now, although it would take one almighty collapse to lose it from here.

View attachment 49942

Young striker Jordan Ponticelli, who did make a few appearances for me this season, will see out the rest of the campaign with AFC Fylde in the Vanarama National League. It will be good for the lad to get a proper run of games under his belt.

We finish the month with a solid away win at mid table Morecambe. To be fair to them, they didn’t play badly. We just took our chances better on the day.

Manchester City have lifted the Carabao Cup, beating fierce rivals Manchester United in the final.

View attachment 49939

We seem to be extending that lead at the top every month and it’s now up to 18 points and by the end of March we could have the title in the bag. Eastleigh look destined for relegation at the other end, but I have to say fair play to Rochdale who have lifted themselves out of the bottom 2 following a disastrous first half of the season.

Tranmere find themselves in a race to make the playoffs as the season comes into its final 10 games. But we didn’t help their cause at all here, as we recorded a big 4-1 victory against a side that were particularly poor. Only 3 teams have conceded more than Tranmere in the league all season (Eastleigh, Rochdale and Hartlepool).

Saturday 13th March 2021
Sky Bet League Two: Notts County (Away)

Kick-Off: 15:00
Lineup: Burge, Davies, Pask, Goode, Grimmer, Batty, Haynes, Bailey, Preston, Hornby, Honesty

With so much on the line here, the boys could have buckled. But they held their nerve and turned in a good display against a Notts County side that could be described as underperforming as they sit in the bottom half of the table.

With the away win at Notts County, we have confirmed automatic promotion and will be playing League One football next season! All that’s left to do now is win this title as quickly as possible!

View attachment 49855

With promotion confirmed, the board set the initial budgets for next year. I’ll only have £320k to improve the squad as the club’s financial status continues to sit in negative status.
