What Game Are You Playing At The Moment?

Right, tried going with the Netherlands save again, but decided to dump that one too. Think I'll wait for some patches and mods, and maybe couple of DLCs, before I pick up HoI 4 again.

The base game is bags of fun, but there's some problems. Poor balance and dumb AI at release is expected, I'm sure it'll be fixed eventually.

But the endgame is seriously lacking, and that annoys me. If you play your cards right, you often reach that point in every save where you can't really lose, but it would take 30-40 hours to actually win.

My Germany save is the best example. I still have to defeat USRR and the US, so there should be plenty to do. But in fact they cannot take on me on land, sea or in the air, and they can't outproduce me. I'd just have to spend a week microing land wars to actually get them to surrender.

First 4-5 years of every save are the best, but endgame just becomes grind and micro ****.

Yeah there is a real game in there, a really top quality WW2 game, could be one of if not the best after a few big patches. The problems so far as I can tell in my 100 hours are

AI cannot properly prioritise multifront wars, I think it can just about handle two but throw in a third country and things get wonky. It also likes to just war declare for fun which can be annoying and then sometimes war merging doesn't make sense and to who the spoils go don't make sense. Hence I never join a faction or lead my own.

Production is ******, the slowdown in later years is what makes the speed of the game grind to a halt, the AI basically just never stops throwing out units, it doesn't even slow production down it goes for maximum output from start to finish, now that amount of units and production will slow any game down.

Battle plans although a good idea and a concept I like just are not WAD, we need the ability to micro the battle plans like I said a few posts back, may look into modding this myself over the summer, it should possibly be achievable, I think if you modded in a unit hardcap relative to manpower pool would stop the AI making 200 more divisions than needed.

Tech tree needs expanding, I think what it needs is more exclusive choices to specialise your units, these be available through upgrades and then forces you and the AI to use production for upgrades rather than them pumping out divisions continuously.

Also AI unit placement needs looking at I saw Germany deploy 40 divisions to Ethiopia other day was just like er ok maybe it has secret oil field I am not aware of.

Issues aside I think this game will become one of the greats once sorted I do love it, the new production system which they kinda borrowed among other things from their cancelled game East vs West is brilliant I really like it. things just need sorting, I may get to work modding if I can be bothered but the things I want sorting will not be easy, wont be like rewriting a few lines in the LUA.

Yeah, it does need some work, but the core mechanics are really solid, and that's what matters. It just needs fine tuning, not the full rework from the ground up, like HoI3 did.

The war declaring I actually like, mind. I think they've given some countries hidden modifiers to make them more randomly aggressive than others, and then you have Hitler or Mussolini declaring war on Honduras out of the sudden. So even if you're playing without historical focus, it still feels like there are raving madman running the Axis.

And if you normally don't join factions, you should really try Germany save. They have huge political power bonus you can spend on coups and turning other countries into Nazis. That allows a lot of crazy diplomatic stunts that are only really possible with Germany. I think I converted like 12 countries in my save.

I'm debating whether I want to mod the game at this point or wait till August for 1.3, just not sure if what I want to mod is possible, probably should pick up stellaris again too at some point 1.2 has fixed a lot of issues from what I have seen

The one thing I hope someone mods in, is some proper special forces. It would work great with the coup mechanic. Set up a coup, send in "volunteers" and destroy the country from within. It would add a totally another dimension to politics in the game, but for that those couple of units that you send in need to be capable of ripping ****.

You know what I love most about Overwatch? I love:

1) Trying to explain to noobs why they should hide behind a tanks shields, as they slowly die before my eyes standing right in front of turret.
2) Trying to explain the concept, of protecting a healer and why they shouldn't ask for healing AFTER I'VE BEEN KILLED. AGAIN. BECAUSE NO PROTECTION.
3) People whining at me when I'm tank, because I let them die. After I told them for the 1000th time to get behind my dam shield.
4) Giving people a warning that the rear is exposed. Then watching as everyone charges FORWARD, and abandoning the point. Leaving me as HEALER as the sole team mate to protect the point. Then watching as the opponents tank comes flying towards me from the rear.
5) The fantastic amount of team work and communication.
6) Everyone thinking Overwatch is the same as CoD and scattering to the four winds so I can't heal them because they want their precious kill streak.
7) People demanding to know why I switched from healer to DPS, after watching said people scattering all over the map thinking it's CoD, and being unable to heal them because scattered so far and always being out of line of sight. After I told them to ensure to stay in line of sight and not scatter everywhere.
8) Carrying an entire team of 6 players to victory, because everyone is busy arguing each other and ignoring the objective.
9) Out DPSing the entire team and getting 3 gold medals. As healer.
10) It's an awesome game.

10/10 would get salty again

God just cannot play HOI4 and Stellaris at all, needs patches to drop and probably a DLC before I venture back in all honesty, don't get me wrong both are good games but a EU4 vet such as I knows what they will become so I am saving myself for that. Its like I am in love with their potential I finally get what the mrs has been telling me all these years (6)

Anyway, been smashing a bit of Fallout 4 bought the 4 quid DLC that lets you make factory lines, its ok and fun especially for 4 quid any settlement dlc is cool by me anyway that made me **** me not made factorio in such a long time. so loaded it up, and **** me has achievements now so that's my week there trying to produce 200k iron plates an hour!

I know the feeling. I want to play HoI 4, but I don't want to.

Thankfully it's been a year of strategy games so far, so plenty of things to try while waiting for HoI to improve.

Tbh, I don't know what happening with gaming lately. I was about ready to give up on gaming as a hobby, because nothing was grabing my attention anymore. But last 1-2 years have been amazing, I've probably spent more time gaming, than in previous 5 of years combined. I don't know if it's Kickstarter effect or what, but it looks like mid-sized developers are back, and with them endless supply of things to try.

Just a couple of years back, your choice was was either AAA blockbusters or browser based flash games. Now all the cool genres are back and swinging. Strategy is back. Tactical games are back. Oldschool RPGs are back. It's madness.

Speaking of waiting till Stellaris gets polished. There's Endless Space 2 coming out this year also. I think this might end up being much better offering right off the bat.

I somewhat liked the first one but like most strategy games I poured 30 hours and then didn't go back to it, I agree though it will probably be a better offering on launch. I am watching a couple of Stellaris mods with great interest atm, Warhammer 40k is coming a long nicely going by the forum, and there is 2 star trek ones so I will hopefully finally have a spiritual successor to birth of the federation. The Star Wars one looked to be coming on magnificently but looks to have died which is a great shame.

Just gunna hammer Factorio till Rimworld drops on Friday that and No mans Sky should hold me over the summer till we get Stellaris/HOI4 updates and also the prospective new releases. Already making sure I hsave zero work scheduled for Battlefield 1 releasing!

Yeah, same here. It was just missing something. But from what I heard they supported the game for quite a while, plenty of free content updates and there was some expansion also I think. But that first game they ever made, I figure after couple of years they should do significantly better. One thing about Amplitude Studios though, the user interface is AMAZING.

Yeah I really liked their other game Endless Legend the combat was really satifying and it was a really solid game overall, I'll defo be picking up Endless Space 2 at some point its just when to fit in all the games this year. September onwards seems like there is too many titles to pick up, glad I got the HOI4 season pass so safe DLC wise for that.

OMG Rimworld is the most fun I have had in ages, whether its making the perfect colony and then everyone dies of heatstroke or just downloading shitloads oof mods from steam workshop and making the game have exponentially more depth its just a crazy amount of fun

Got into Invisible Inc again. Turn-based tactics rougelike with an added stealth twist.

It's not maybe a game that will acquire legendary status or whatever, but everything about it is really tightly made. The graphics, the interface, the combat, it's all highly polished and made for endless replayability with plenty of challenge modes and stuff. Great fun if you need to sink few hours into something.

Marvel Ultimate alliance 1 and 2 are coming to next gen and steam awesome spent faaaaaar too much time playing both titles!

Finishing up HoI4 save with Greece. Fun country to play, entire area is mountains so it's super easy to defend, and there's shitload of resources available either in Greece itself or in nearby countries.

One thing that absolutely infuriates me though, is being locked into wars for eternity until every major nation falls. It sucks all the joy out of playing smaller countries. You build a large empire starting from 3 provinces, and then suddenly you need to invade Australia on the other side of planet for the peace conference to trigger.

What a game

Ultimate alliance is so fun with so many easter eggs, its very similar to X-Men legends if you ever played that, the only stickint right now for me is that its full game price for the two which I am not sure about. ALso could be digital only so that is offputting too as no trade in value. Hopefully physical copies turn up on Friday, and I will just whizz through mirrors edge then trade in

Never played the Xmen one either.

I've been though my life long enough not playing any of these. I'm sure I can wait until they're sub 10 quid lol

You have the xbox 1 though don't you? you have the choice of picking up the 360 versions for mere pounds the only thing I am envious of as a PS4 owner
