Aberystwyth Town - European Giant

The takeover bid from the tycoon has collapsed... I'm actually pretty happy about it though, I don't really need any extra money and I want to move towards having a more home grown/Welsh feel to the team anyway. Now it would be very interesting to see a tycoon takeover one of the other Welsh clubs! Not sure whether this would realistically happen or not but it would be good!

Tycoon takeover would have been interesting!! Shame. Great stuff last season as always pal, challenges should keep you amused for another few seasons :p

Hopefully mate... Starting to get a bit bored of this tbh, will try to stick it out though as I can't settle on another challenge to start... Was thinking either a lower league to Premier League save or a Club and Country challenge with someone who has never really qualified for a major tournament like Kazakhstan or Malta. Only problem with that is it will get to a similar point that this save has where the league is so easy it is pointless :S

I love this story you've done absolute magic with them but like you said the league is so easy now and the Champions League is a bit of a lottery at times.

Yeah, I think I've found a happy medium... A club and country challenge with a club from Kazakhstan, but I'll use one of the custom Soviet League structures so the league should still be competitive as I'll be playing against the top Russian and Ukrainian teams in the league. What do you think?

Sounds good mate!! Something I've never seen it before so should be popular too.

Match Day 1 - Rubin Kazan 2 - 4 Aberystwyth Town

View attachment 362617

We were 4-0 up in this game heading into second half injury time, however they pulled two goals back and made the scoreline look a lot closer than the game actually was!

Match Day 2 -
Aberystwyth Town 5 - 2 Bayern Munich

View attachment 362618

Another convincing win from the boys, however we have now conceded 4 goals in our first two group games which is worrying...

Match Day 3 -
Panathinaikos 0 - 1 Aberystwyth Town

View attachment 362619

A great away win after going down to 10 men after 23 minutes and then down to 9 men after 73 minutes. Despite our numerical disadvantage, we managed to prevent the Greeks from getting one shot on target!

Match Day 4 -
Aberystwyth Town 3 - 0 Panathinaikos

View attachment 362620

The match stats show our complete domination of this game and, to be fair, we could have scored a few more goals.

Match Day 5 -
Aberystwyth Town 3 - 0 Rubin Kazan

View attachment 362621

Our second 3-0 victory in a row and a third consecutive clean sheet, we are finally starting to look like the defending champions we are!

Match Day 6 -
Bayern Munich 3 - 3 Aberystwyth Town

View attachment 362622

Very Disappointing. 3-0 up after 14 minutes and we were cruising, however Bayern pulled two goals back and went in at half time trailing by just one goal. There was then no real chances until the last minute of added on time where Bayern equalized and broke our 100% record in the group. Also, right back Cigrovski got a booking which will mean he'll miss the 1st leg of the 1st Knockout Round.

Final Standings:

View attachment 362623

So no 100% record this year and surprisingly it is Panathinaikos who will join us in the 1st knockout round. We certainly have conceded more goals than I would have liked and this will have to improve in the knockout rounds if we want to go far in the tournament.

Welsh Teams in Europe:

View attachment 362628

TNS -
3rd in Champions League Group F

View attachment 362624View attachment 362625

A great effort from TNS, picking up two wins over Feyenoord and a draw against Atletico Madrid. They finish third and drop into the Europa League knockout rounds against Southampton.

Llanelli AFC - 3rd in Europa League Group C

View attachment 362626View attachment 362627

Llanelli also did as well as can be expected, picking up two victories over Maribor and getting a draw against both Valencia and Lille. Unfortunately they finished third so their European adventure is over, but some real signs of improvement from them here!

Next update will be a trip to Korea for the Club World Championships. Can we make Aberystwyth club champions of the world for a second time?

Semi Final - Aberystwyth Town 2 - 0 Seongnam

A standard victory using our backup players sees us cruise into the final, with the goals coming from Iwan Bell and Roy Watson.
Corinthians await in the final after beating Cruz Azul in their semi final...

Final -

Another trophy lands safely in the Aberystwyth Town trophy cabinet, as we are club world champions for a second time. We were the better side throughout the game and deserved our victory, hopefully we can win the Champions League to give ourselves a chance of retaining the trophy next year!

Next update will be our Champions League 1st Knockout Round tie against Italian giants Juventus, as we have had no transfer activity in the January transfer window...

Ooosh well done. What happened to the Borat save anyway?

1st Knockout Round: 1st Leg - Juventus 0 - 1 Aberystwyth Town

View attachment 362803

It took a long time for the deadlock to be broken but we do have a 1-0 lead to take back to the Houghton Arena, as Argentine center back Guirado notched a 91st minute winner!

1st Knockout Round: 2nd Leg - Aberystwyth Town 1 - 1 Juventus

View attachment 362804

Nice and safely into the quarter finals we go...

Quarter Final: 1st Leg - AS Roma 3- 4 Aberystwyth Town

View attachment 362807

This game did not start as planned, as we quickly found ourselves 2-0 down! However, the lads fought back really well and we're 3-2 up by the break. We then sat back in the second half and caught Roma on the counter attack with Christian Christensen getting only his 2nd goal for the club and putting us 4-2 up. It was disappointing that they managed to pull one back, but we are still in a very commanding position.

Quarter Final: 2nd Leg - Aberystwyth Town 6 -
0 AS Roma

View attachment 362809

Complete domination back in Wales! A great performance, capped off by Welshman Martin ap Dadffyd bagging himself a hattrick after coming in as a replacement for the suspended Thomas. Barcelona saw off Real Madrid in an El Classico Quarter Final to set up a semi final clash with ourselves...

A good night in Spain for the lads, taking a 1-1 draw and an away goal back to Wales. The tie is very much in the balance and the first goal at Houghton Arena will be pivotal...

2nd Leg -
Aberystwyth Town 1 - 0 FC Barcelona

View attachment 362902

A goal in the 80th minute from Kieran Pringle ensures we make it to a 3rd consecutive Champions League Final, and we have a chance of retaining the trophy we won last year! Also, Chelsea beat Manchester United in the other semi, so it will be a repeat of last years final and Chelsea will be gunning for revenge! The final is to be played at the Olimpico in Rome...

Next update will be our Champions League Final match against Chelsea, who are currently 6th in the Premier League. Also, forgot to mention TNS got beat in the 1st Knockout Round of the Europa League 5-2 on aggregate.

View attachment 362959

A very commanding performance by the boys in the final sees us retain our Champions League trophy in a repeat of last year's final, our 4th Champions League in total now. We were in command from the very off in this game and once Godoy and Thomas had put us 2-0 by the 13th minute I was pretty confident, and this confidence was justified as we didn't even allow them a shot on target. This completes an almost perfect season for us this year...

Houghton Appointed Wales Manager

View attachment 363550

The Welsh FA were quick to appoint Aberystwyth Town manager Scott Houghton as their new manager, following Phillip Ready's resignation in the wake of a decent European Championship for Wales. Wales finished third in their group but crept into the round of 16 due to being one of the better third place teams, where they succumbed to Sweden on penalties. Houghton is seen by many as the obvious successor as he had hinted upon his desire to take the job many times in the past, and will be able to use his position as Aberystwyth Town manager to help young Welsh talent progress. In a short press conference, Houghton outlined a few points he wanted to make clear about his position as Wales Manager:

1) "Although I will be trying my best to use the wonderful set up to help as many Welsh talents progress as possible, I will not do so to the detriment of the club side. Players will only get a place in the Aberystwyth Town squad if they are good enough to hold their place in the squad, be that back up or first choice.

2) I expect us to be competitive in our World Cup Qualifying Group, as do the Welsh FA. Our group is a very tough one including both Germany and Russia as the 1st and 2nd seeds, with Slovenia and Romania also proving tough opposition. I personally am aiming for a second place finish and hopefully from there we will be able to book ourselves a spot on the plane to Portugal 2038.

View attachment 363553

3) Initially, I am going to be looking at adopting similar tactics for Wales as to what I do for Aberystwyth, playing sharp, fluid, attacking football. The three key players I have identified for the national side are Iwan Bell, Martin ap Daffyd (Both Aberystwyth players) and Adam Savage. All three are world class players in my opinion and have the potential to improve.

So that's that for this season, our most successful season at the club! Would people like a full introduction to the Wales squad and the young Welsh players at the club?
I understand the Aberystwyth side of the save is probably getting a bit boring and repetitive, so the Wales side of things should keep things a bit more interesting. Also, I am going to be adding a second manager to this save, following the idea of Stonecold on his Aberdeen story. I'll be looking to achieve a few of the steam achievements I haven't managed to unlock but will also be looking at reader's suggestions as to where this new manager's career goes...

Intro to the Welsh side would be good. Excellent story, keep up the good work!

Kevin Conn appointed Forfar Athletic Manager!

View attachment 363656

Aberystwyth Town legend Kevin Conn has took his first step into management, taking charge of recently relegated Scottish third division side Forfar Athletic. At his first press conference, Conn showed his high ambitions, claiming that he believes he can take Forfar all the way to the Scottish Premier League and hopes to do so within 5 seasons. The 37 year old wasted no time strengthening his Forfar squad, securing the following players who he believes would not be out of place in the Scottish Second Division...

View attachment 363660View attachment 363661View attachment 363663View attachment 363664View attachment 363665

These signings have added to what was an already good squad at Station Park, and the target for the season will surely be to gain promotion from the Third Division, which they currently lead after 3 games...

View attachment 363668View attachment 363669

What do you guys think of Conn's first step into management? Since this is a sidestory to Aberystwyth/Wales, I was think of just updating pre-season and end of season but I'm happy to do a mid-season update aswell if people think that will be better. Again, your opinions are wanted here...
