Devils begin season in style

Gary Neville

Published at 6:29PM, August 15 2027

Manchester United shrugged off transfer market worries with a breathtaking season opener at Old Trafford to crush newly promoted Crewe Alexandra 9-2. Pundits are predicting tough life for Crewe in the Premier League and even the Railwaymen manager Steve Davis must admit those are not empty warnings.

Shoretire scored twice from the spot

Before the game Old Trafford was murmuring over the lack of transfer activity and the repetitive sale of young stars. The tense atmosphere did not stop the lads from turning a world class performance to remind the stands there is still plenty of talent in the dressing room. Shola Shoretire lead the troops by grabbing four goals against his name in a real masterclass from midfield. Young Callaghan and experienced new striker Obi also made it in the scoresheet to suggest they could form a lethal partnership in attack.

Do we really need to buy?

I have thought a lot about how complete the team is - and I have little doubt Sir Alex has done the same in a detailed manner. We lost Jackie Wilshere after he refused to sign a new contract in order to retire, influential El Alagui picked to go on loan to Leeds over us this summer, and of course we did sell Dylan Connery to Queens Park Rangers in a notorious piece of business. But the squad isn't too short of numbers. We are well packed in midfield and if we manage to add a body or two before the window closes we should be fine. There is room for a centre-back, a full-back and perhaps a winger or striker. Mind that Ferguson has already said we will only buy if the right player becomes available so there may be no further business from us this summer.

Leeds United: money can buy you class but experience is vital - Matteo

Liverpool are so far the most active spenders in the transfer market. They are throwing a lot of money around and no one can argue they are adding class to their ranks. But they were well beaten by an experienced Leeds side and reminded a bitter fact today - money can buy you class though is class enough?

Leeds take the right road unlike Liverpool

One can look for some insight at the scoresheet today. All three goalscorers are Premier League weathered players. Herrera and Pöyry are synonymous with Leeds and our former star Mork grabbed the consolation goal for Liverpool amongst a team full of youth and promise. I am sure Liverpool will learn how to nurture those players and one day become a force to be reckoned with but it won't happen before the young guns realize the true meaning of Anfield and its history.

How long before the graduate?

Of course we also spent huge amounts of cash but our approach begs to differ. We attracted a balanced mix between talent and experience with four of five new signings well experienced in the Premier League. This I call money well spent and we should be much better positioned to achieve results both short and long term. The horrendous mistakes of the spring must be avoided at all cost if we are to play a more serious role this season and by the look of it Harry Redknapp is taking care of that just fine. There is nothing better than starting with a win against one of the other contenders so at least for now the future is looking bright, for those WAFLL!

Newcastle make a statement by trashing old rivals

Prior to the Saturday game against old rivals Blackburn the Newcastle manager Dimiter Hristov spoke about the importance of building an early lead in the league to avoid last season's scare when the title fight virtually continued to the final day. The players obviously took his words to heart and blew Rovers out of the game with merciless, mercurial display.

Magpies confident of strong start

Unlike the opening game when Dong Dexin stole the show we saw five different scorers this time. Our dominance was underlined by the time gaps between each goal which comes to show we never had foot off the pedal. Aubrey Mashishi did a fine job in bossing the midfield and despite failing to find himself on a shooting position contributed with two assists. The attacking four of Jim Priestley, Radek Pilar, Diego Escudero, Leomar all found their way to the scoresheet and utility wing-back Gerardo Soriano completed the rout with the final kick of the game.

On the verge of 20th league title

Such a convincing result against a side we failed to beat in the league last season comes as a sound statement of our intention to get the 20th league title wrapped as early as possible. We are well capable of putting together a strong run and it will be interesting to see if any of the other contenders can keep the tempo.

Last gasp winner relief spares Voltolini the blues

We were on the verge of failing in the second game of the season as well when van Bremen finally netted the winner against a resilient Oxford side who somehow managed to keep us at bay despite all our attacking power and the referee awarding us a weird penalty. It would have been a **** scenario after spending so much money and the pressure would have been immense. There is still pressure but we got on the right path and it is easier to keep going when you have tasted victory.

View attachment 354542
Voltolini misses penalty kick

Italian star Pierpaolo Voltolini disappointed big time as he missed a penalty and played so poorly the manager was forced to substitute him. I have no doubt Pierpaolo will return stronger after that game but it comes to underline bringing in too many new players will take time for them to settle in and might disrupt the balance in the short term. The management is aware of this and hopefully they will keep introducing the new lads slowly to let them taste the Premier League. Of course raking in as many points as possible is the priority.

Solid defense boosts flank options

Better news is how much Travieso and Schmidt have improved in the heart of defense. Their partnership looks solid as they limited Oxford to just one shot on goal (unluckily it produced their equalizer) and gave license to Ramirez and Jesenkovic to bombard forward from the wings. If we can continue to develop this defensive unit we will have a key tactical option to break down opposition much stronger than Oxford.

Liverpool extend spending spree with Leeds winger

It is a very hot summer at Anfield with Liverpool announcing the seventh signing this summer. Ignazio Messina (29) arrives from Leeds in a £8.25m deal. Messina has found himself on the fringes of the first team this season and was open for a transfer in order to get regular football.

Despite his advancing age, Messina still has a lot to offer and will bring additional depth to a Liverpool squad which is to be tested with the hectic Europa League games this campaign. He managed 36 appearances for Leeds last season with 5 goals and 10 assists.

Rovers back on track after Newcastle shock

............................................................................................................

It wasn't the defeat itself but the manner it was conceded that had Rovers fans desperate last weekend. There were doubts we could repeat our success from the previous campaign with Newcastle way too strong for us to match in the direct clash. Truth is this game came way too early before we have had a chance to build up confidence and establish ourselves as genuine contenders again. This is why it was essential to correct the wrong as soon as possible.

Desire against Villans even better than result

Newly promoted Aston Villa were the perfect opponent for that purpose and the team responded with a commited all round performance. The classic 3-0 victory puts us back in the frame so the voices of doubt will be silenced for the time being.

View attachment 354623
Next games should be a walk in the park

We now face three relatively easy league games against Middlesbrough, Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday. It is essential to pick nine points from them - and then we can look around again and see where it puts us. Otherwise those doubts will find unexpected and rather unpleasant ground.

Early season kick in the nose leaves Chelsea blue-faced

Tony Cascarino Commentary
Last updated at 8:01PM, August 28 2027

Failing to grant Champions League football last season didn't cost Marcelino his post but the Chelsea manager will find it hard to get another vote of confidence from owner Roman Abramovich after a disastrous start of the current campaign. Just one win in three games and chances for top four are quickly diminishing.

View attachment 354629
Early cracks in Chelsea's season

Marcelino bemoaned the red card in the first round against Manchester City and a convincing win against Crewe Alexandra served well to repair the damage but today's draw at Everton suggests the cracks were merely covered rather than truly addressed and uprooted. It wasn't good to see new goalkeeper Andy Conroy concede twice against the Toffees but what is more worrying is the lack of fight the team gave their hosts after Viviano equalized for Chelsea. With more than twenty minutes left the game was there for the taking although rather surprising the Blues looked like they would be happy to merely share the spoils. As eventually happened.

View attachment 354630
Marcelino looking for positives

Further worrying signs were to be seen during the post-match press conference. Marcelino picked to defend the point as a successful result by explaining Goodison Park is a tough place to go to and the draw will hold strategic merit as the season advances. It might. But Marcelino should realize if he doesn't improve results quickly he may not live to take advantage of that strategic result - at least not as the Chelsea manager.

The Contenders:

Manchester United (2nd; 6pts; +9) - perfect start for the Red Devils in the first two games of the season.
Player of the month: Guy Amadou (M/AMC/ST) 8.14
0 Current first team injuries.

Newcastle (3rd; 6pts; +8) - strong start for the ruling champions with a magnificent win over rivals Blackburn the highlight of the month.
Player of the month: Pape Diédhiou (DC/DM) 8.24
1 Current first team injury:
Leomar (DM/MRC/AMRL) - 12-14 days (twisted knee)

Blackburn (6th; 6pts; -1) - Rovers suffer a confidence damaging loss at the hands of Newcastle but respond well to pick two wins from the other league games this month. The bad news is they are struggling with central midfield injuries as both their first team players in that position are out.
Player of the month: Patricio Espinoza (MC) 7.98
2 Current first team injuries:
Patricio Espinoza (MC) - 6-8 weeks (torn calf muscle)
Ismail Hakan Tosun (MC) - 4-10 days (sports hernia)

Chelsea
(7th; 4pts; +2) - not the best of starts for the Blues with a win, a draw and a loss in the opening three games of the season.
Player of the month: Tajuddin Hossain (M/AML) 7.84
2 Current first team injuries:
Mike Pritchard (DLC) - 6-8 weeks (torn hamstring)
Miguel Fernandes (AMR/ST) - 4-5 weeks (sports hernia)

Leeds (9th; 4pts; +1) - a win against contenders Liverpool and a late equalizer to steal a point from Tottenham make a decent start in the league for Leeds considering the tough fixtures.
Player of the month: Elvis El Alagui (AMR/ST) 7.66
0 Current first team injuries.

Liverpool (13th; 3pts; 0) - unpleasant start for Liverpool with a loss against fellow contenders Leeds but the Reds recover with a hard-fought win against Oxford.
Player of the month: Holger Schmidt (DRC) 7.72
0 Current first team injuries.

Other teams to watch:

Manchester City (1st) - the Citizens just missed out on being included in the contender list and look to prove that was a mistake with a very strong start. Three wins from three games and top spot after August!

Arsenal (4th) - the Gunners start well in a bid to attack European qualification places or maybe even top 4.

West Ham (5th) - the Hammers surprisingly find themselves at the summit after August. Considering their only loss of points came against ruling champions Newcastle their form puts a strong bid for the surprise package of the season.

Tottenham (16th) - Spurs are still looking for a win and need to improve if they want to move up the table.

Swansea, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Crewe Alexandra occupy the bottom places with a point or less in their balance and are set for a tough campaign.

Lucky we only play Newcastle twice - bad loss but we must move on quickly

Gary Neville

Published at 7:41PM, September 12 2027

It is hard to move on when you get beaten 5-0 at your ground. Newcastle gave us a good beating and we can only accept they were much better than us, much better than last season. There are no positives to take from the game but one: we have one of the toughest games off the fixture list. It is vital not to dwell on it and move on.

View attachment 354967
Time for experienced players to lead

We have a good chance to do that with Champions League group games starting midweek. Paradoxically we should face a much more comfortable opponent there and a good result will do miracles to fix our badly hurt confidence. If we can do that we should be fine. In this tough moment Sir Alex would do well to call on the experienced players to drive us through. Shola Shoretire, Walter Blasi and Guy Amadou should make their voices heard in the dressing room and reinvigorate the younger players.

View attachment 354969
Too much space in defensive line

There are things to be addressed in our tactics, particularly the defensive line. Martyn Flint had a terrible game against the Magpies but his individual mistakes could have been avoided if the collective effort was better. Sadly Newcastle managed to pull our defenders around and consistently isolate them which put additional individual pressure. There may be little time for training until the next league game but work needs to be done otherwise our impressive attacking movement will be negated by any side bold enough to try and emulate Newcastle's approach.

Leeds United: Korean controversy must be channeled productively - Matteo
article_photo.jpg

by Dominic Matteo
South Korean striker Ahn Jung-Ho kaboomed Leeds midweek by talking to the press about his unhappiness at finding himself on the bench. The striker threatened he wouldn't hesitate to leave the club if he doesn't start more games despite just joining. Harry Redknapp responded by handing him a starting place for the home clash with Swansea and Jung-Ho took full advantage by firing a hat-trick past the Swans. The abusive chants from the stands in the beginning of the game transformed into cheers with many fans confused whether to support the South Korean or remind him he should earn respect before commanding his wishes.

View attachment 354972
Ahn Jung-Ho talks to the press

A difficult decision for Harry Redknapp has been eased by the injury of his preferred choice Diego Herrera. Harry is a manager of habits though and it will be interesting to see if Jung-Ho is able to impress as much in Herrera's absence to continue his stint in the starting sheet after Diego returns. Because Redknapp doesn't have a choice now but he certainly doesn't enjoy his players talking to the press and will remember this outburst.

View attachment 354971
Can Harry swallow his ego?

Harry got himself in this dilemma though. The late decision to sell Kieron Aspinall leaves us with little back-up in attack and for the first time in a while we can't afford to have an unhappy striker on our books. This should allow the problem to resolve itself naturally. If Redknapp can swallow his ego for the sake of the team.
