Italian striker first signing in Dalglish reign

Liverpool have adopted a different approach in the transfer market since Kenny Dalglish bought the club. Kenny has kept quiet about transfers but media suggested funds will be tight this summer after a large sum went to cover the previous ownership's debts. All this meant the Liverpool fans needed to wait until August to see the first signing. Dalglish gave the green light after careful scouting and few will question the quality of the player - Andrea Vicentini (23) is a versatile forward who can also play at the right wing. He cost £9m and arrives from A.C. Milan.

Andrea Vicentini

He is familiar with English football after spending the 26/27 campaign with Crewe Alexandra helping them secure Premier League qualification in the Championship. Andrea made a big impression scoring 18 goals in 22 games and A.C. Milan put him in the first team last season. He only managed 4 starts but featured regularly from the bench for 23 more appearances - and contributed 12 goals. Liverpool's promise of more first team football convinced him to return to England and test himself with the best in the world.

Blackburn grant contract rebel Mensah Citizens exit

Neil Lennon continues his smart business with the second summer signing for Rovers. After raiding Manchester United for right full-back Martyn Flint, Lennon looked at the blue half of the city to add depth on the left side of defense as well. Ibrahim Mensah (25) has been looking for an exit from Manchester City for over a season and with little time left on his contract the Citizens were forced to sell for peanuts. The deal is worth only £1.6m - incredibly low fee for a player with 352 appearances for Manchester City.

Mensah has been integral part of his previous team and contributed 29 assists and 6 goals in his career with the sky blue shirt. He has immense international experience with 159 caps for Ghana.

Godoy makes Barcelona choice

Chelsea left back Leandro Godoy (27) has been allowed to leave Stamford Bridge after a single season with the Blues. Despite spending £15.5m to secure his services from Roma, Marcelino only played him in ten games and has told Godoy he is free to look for another club in the summer. A number of offers were accepted after the player spent some time on the transfer list and Leandro picked to go to Barcelona. Chelsea will receive £8.25m although that means they only recoup half the amount they invested on the Argentinian.

Rovers sign another Red Devil

By Kevin Gallacher.........iiiiiiiiiii..........9:15 PM Thursday 3rd August 2028 in Sport

Blackburn officially confirmed their third summer signing - and second from title rivals Manchester United. Neil Lennon convinced the Red Devils to sell experienced centre-back Greg Bennett by offering the sizable £14m - rather large fee for a 31 year old. Lennon talked about Bennett's ability to cover at right full-back and mentioned his international experience played an important part in deciding to pay so much for his services.

Greg Bennett

Lennon's criteria for bringing in experienced players with experience at the highest level suggests he is preparing for a successful European campaign after conquering the Premier League. Some pundits argue such a policy doesn't take long term future into account although after the amazing success last campaign the manager is entitled with spending a little more to tweak the squad to his liking.

Hristov decides to cash in on Fekete

Newcastle manager Dimiter Hristov has decided to sell one of his fringe players. Gábor Fekete (29) is a very talented left winger although never booked a first team appearance for the Magpies and spent all ten years since arriving from MTK out on loan. Despite a number of clubs showing interest Manchester City were most persistent in their attempts to sign the flamboyant winger and their £13.25m offer was accepted. Newcastle will also receive 50% from his next transfer.

Gábor Fekete

Fekete may have failed to impress Hristov for a first team place but he can be proud with his career so far. He has played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe like Ajax, FC Bayern, Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Citizens have a very prolific player on their hands now - the Hungary international (78 caps and 15 goals) has scored 10 and passed for 8 more during 35 appearances for Ajax, 8 goals and 10 assists in 37 games for FC Bayern, 29 goals and 31 assists in 85 games for Barcelona, 2 goals and 10 assists in 22 games for Real Madrid, 19 goals and 22 assists in 68 games for Stade Rennais FC, 13 goals and 10 assists in 40 games for LOSC and 16 goals and 15 assists in 39 games for his new club during a previous loan spell with them. Fekete has consistently proved he can cut it in Holland, Spain, France, Germany and England and I am a little sorry we never had the opportunity to watch him in black and white.

Leeds United: versatile Spanish youngster arrives from Atlético Madrid - Matteo
View attachment 359819

by Dominic Matteo
Harry Redknapp has spoken earlier in the summer that incoming transfers this window will be unlikely although he has decided to bolster the youth team with an impressive youngster - Saúl from Atlético Madrid. The centre-back only cost £1.1m but has incredible tactical knowledge at the age of 16. He is already comfortable in the usually awkward defensive midfielder position and quite adept at a more advanced midfield role. I am curious how far he can go after a season or two - if we can develop his talents we will have a gem of a player who only cost us peanuts.

BBC Sport football expert Mark Lawrenson takes a look at the title contenders

6 days and counting down to the start of the new season! Who will challenge for the title? Who will suffer relegation? Will Blackburn defend their crown or nobody will stop Newcastle from reclaiming it?

I think we are up for a cracking season this time. After the Magpies had their hearts broken by Blackburn in the most major upset we have seen in recent years Newcastle will be looking to show everyone who is boss. But it won't be just Blackburn and Newcastle with Liverpool on the wings of passion following Kenny Dalglish's return at Anfield as the new owner of the club. Chelsea and Leeds did not invest much but have highly capable seasoned teams hungry for trophies and Sir Alex Ferguson enjoyed a big spending summer - first since many - and will look to race Newcastle to the twentieth league title as both the Magpies and Manchester United currently sit at 19. But what can we really expect from each of the clubs? Did they change their manager or prefer stability? Did they strengthen or a lucrative offer depleted their squad? What are their provisional squads for the upcoming season? Did they spend a good pre-season or they will meet Day 1 marred with injuries? It's all here on BBC Sport for you. Just read on and spread the word. Starting with the big favourites.

*Note - if the club conducted January transfers, they have been included in the squad sheet using the following format: players bought in January have their name in bold and marked by stars: *Aaron Abraham*; players sold in January have their name in bold and marked by brackets: (Aaron Abraham). What kind of interviews do you have in mind? I intended to add some twitter banter between famous club related figures to spice things up in between the articles and introduce interviews when I get enough feedback from the folks around here so that you guys could ask the questions (would be much more fresh, creative and natural rather than me playing both sides) though for obvious reasons these plans have stalled.
When I think about it, twitter idea sound alot better than mine interview idea :)

Yeah but it's a real pain in the rear to prepare the templates. Joey Barton took me about an hour. I do like the interview idea though if questions aren't coming from different people it's gonna sound mechanic and forced pretty quickly.

Newcastle - Blackburn
FA Community Shield
Sunday 6 August 2028
15:00

12' Goal!! 1-0 Dong Dexin
26' Goal!! 2-0 Radek Pilar
36' Goal!! 3-0 Mickaël van der Vaart
45+2' Half Time
52' Goal!! 4-0 Dong Dexin
88' Goal!! 5-0 Dong Dexin
90+2' Full Time

FINAL SCORE:
Newcastle United 5-0 Blackburn Rovers

Newcastle defeat Rovers for the third consecutive season in the FA Community Shield match. It is little comfort for the champions that Aguilar didn't pick up a red card this time (in his third attempt). Blackburn did try to give it a go but were completely blown out of any contention. Dong Dexin starts the season in style with a hat-trick and Rovers must be worried about how they are going to retain the title. Let's take a look at match stats and individual performances:
