Norwich City has announced that Dutch football legend and former world player of the year Marco van Basten will replace Chris Hughton as manager with immediate effect following the coach’s dismissal. The highly rated 48 year old manager, who has left Dutch side SC Heerenveen to take charge at Carrow Road. The club have also announced that former Manchester United assistant Mike Phelan will be taking up a role at the club. Phelan, a former Norwich City player, and van Basten are looking forward to getting their teeth stuck into life in East Anglia and the club are known to be planning to make several signings before the transfer window closes.
Chairman Alan Partridge said that he was very pleased to bring van Basten to the club and that he was confident the star, who scored 24 goals in 58 caps for Holland, could replicate his playing career behind the scenes. He also confirmed that the club had also been keen to make Brian McClair, head youth development at Manchester United, manager but that they couldn’t agree a compensation fee while managers such as Andre Villas-Boas, Tony Mowbray, Rene Meulensteen and Michael Laudrup had all been contacted over taking over from Hughton but that in the interview van Basten shone as the best candidate.
‘He showed real ambition and I’m confident that he and Mike will be able to replicate their past glories here at Norwich.’ He said while the loyal fanbase has got behind the new manager.
