When the chips are down you need an inspirational leader to get the team motivated on a pitch. A captain does count on so many levels.
but my point is this: terry doesnt need to have the armband to do that. if the chips are down you can bet he do his best to be inspirational in the world cup.

you no full well he will but players, when the chips are down often turn to the captain of the side.

eh, that makes no sense, since armband or not ferdinand is a good defender.

if you have natural leaders in the teams it doesnt matter whos wearing the armband.

I think the armband does make a difference to the player who is wearing it and therefore the team. I'd be pretty proud if I was captain of the England squad and I imagine the players who get it are also pretty proud, therefore they play to a higher level and their leadership becomes more relevant and pronounced, Terry and Rooney will still be shouting at player etc without the armband but I'd imagine theyd make more of an effort if they did have it on.

If you did not have a captian on a team then the less motivated players would have to look around and try to work out who will lead them. Whereas you have a captain on the pitch that wont happen as they know who the natural leader is to motivate them. It psychology on the pitch.

I know he is haha, wasn't trying to say he's ***** or anything.

I think it does matter who's wearing the armband - someone like Gerrard who can lift the team when it really matters. A captain is someone who the rest of the team can look up too,and look to play off him.

Not saying that there aren't natural leaders in our team already but you never know, we could need one inspirational individual to lift us in the worst of situations.

yeah but most teams dont tend to have several players who can pick a team up like we do. im not saying that capatin doenst matter at all. im saying, for england, its not all out about who wears the armband, its about who has the capacity to lead and command and inspire.

Michael Dawson has just been put on stand-by, by Capello.

it sounds serious then :(

sounds like didier drogba could miss world cup now with a fractured elbow lol

At least we arnt ivory coast Drogba is likely to be out of the world cup :O :(

I really think that a Birmingham CB has to be called up if he is injured not that is going to happen because we had the third best home defence in the league behind United and Tottenham by one goal. Not bad for a newly promoted side

no need to more concerned just yet. they still dont know the extent. it doesnt mean dawson is automatically coming

from bbc:
The centre-back, 31, hurt his left knee after a challenge from Emile Heskey at the end of Friday's training session.
"We hope it will not be so bad but we have [Tottenham's] Michael Dawson on call," said England boss Fabio Capello.

It's going to be Dawson -- he's just been put on stand-by.

yes, and a tottenham centreback is first on the list. he isnt going to call up dann.

Big blow for us considering King's knee is so fragile. So if he gets injured aswell, which is a possibility, then we are left with Upson & Dawson - one clown and a good player but with 0 experience.

We can't afford to lose any of our top players. Feel gutted for Drogba aswell, this was meant to be his last WC.

I know and I agree Dawson is a better player but Upson c'mon they had the joint fifth worst defence in the league

Drogba might still play. It's only been reported by a french newspaper. I'd wait for an official statement.

Tulio seems to be making a name for himself, a goal + own goal v england and now injuring drogba, perhaps spurs should sign him next season!

Ah, honstly not suprised. He's not been fit much this season, and to me it was either going to happen to him or King. Shame though.

Lol, First thing Heskey does XD

Im only going by his reaction on the pitch, he looked devastated.
But then again, Drogba does react like he's been shot on most occasions when he goes down.

Drogba is injured aswell. This World Cup isnt turning out to be good after all. A ball hasnt even been kicked and we have three potentially bad injuries which could rule three stars out of the world cup and a striker having to play in goal or not play a match in them 5 weeks
