I remember similar complaints after we drew against Rep.Ireland in 1990, and England went on to get to the semi-finals.

Yes, England weren't great but there was enough there to suggest that we can expect steady improvement, the tournament isn't won or lost in the opening week - so far no team has really impressed. Heskey showed both why Capello trusts him to do a particular job (create space for Rooney and in yesterday's case the more attacking midfielders), and why he worries most fans when he does get presented with a decent chance.

For all the talk of formations the key to any success is in the team retaining the ball better, cut out the sloppy passes.

Green's mistake was a bad one, the first rule of goalkeeping is get your body behind the ball and Green failed to do that. I may be biased but I have always felt James should start and that Joe Hart is the future. Two "easy games" now and we can still top the group after that it can be a bit of lottery.

which is why barry ( and hargreaves when fit) are important players no matter what we play, short accurate passing to the creative players. personally i would like to 4-2-3-1 against algeria, since they will likely switch to 3-5-2 against us, with joe cole and barry coming in. and green most definitely starting

I was pretty ****** off after last nights game, mainly because it was a game we could of and should of won. In reflection though we got a point so we just have to get on with it.

Besides,in the last World Cup,eventual winners Italy drew their first group game,it was against the USA.

And as Gordon Banks said yesterday, we drew the first game in '66.

I agree with that JP. USA aren't a pushover, they are well organised and line up in an old fashioned two banks of four. This is probably why England struggled against them, they played an old fashioned English game - we are unlikely to face that again in the tournament.

Why was Robert Green in goal anyway?

A dont see why everyone is saying His save was good..You got to remeber if he would have let that in, he would have got another hammering..Keepers shouldnt be beaten at there front post, he almsot was

I think its the rules. You need to play a keeper.

Ha, love sarcasm. Really though, I reckon both David James and Joe Hart are better goalkeepers, not just because of his mistake last night but over the course of last season also.

Personally i think there is a flea's **** between the 3 of them. None of them are world class.

rooney was invincible what game was u watching he is the most over-rated player in the history of the national team capello needs to pick players on form (crouch) not reputation (rooney) his record is shocking
You talk a load of **** mate. Rooney only picked on reputation? Same rooney who was our top scorer and main man in qualification.:$
His record is shocking? 1 every 2 and a bit games is not **** in anyway. And just so you know torres' record stands at 24 in 73 games while rooney's is 25 in 62.:P
Rooney is clearly our best striker and it would be madness to drop him for crouch just because his record is better.

Hopefully Carragher should start from now on because King is just poor, he didn't even want to be there

P.s All the people saying USA are good were proven wrong by that game, they were horrific, no chance of them getting past the last 16 in fact I think they will struggle against Slovenia and possible Algeria.
I hope king starts to be honest if he's fit. Carragher got owned for pace by jozy altidore and it almost lost us the game.:S

Capello is to blame.

The team was ****, and he maed substitutions at the wrong time.
Crouch should have been brought on much earlier.

But in general, the players are to blame. Gerrard and Terry had decent games, but Gerrard gave the ball away which lead to the goal. Heskey won a few headers, and should have scored and shouldn't play for England again, he's ****. That's not good enough for England.

Capello likes to close down opponents and not give them time on the ball, and I like this, but the players did this for the first few seconds of the game.

We didn't deserve to win the game. Capello for the sack.
XD
Major overreaction, not just by this guy. Decent result but seeing as we easily could have won it was pretty underwhelming. The performance was pretty good not great and there is definetly room for improvement.

We played decently last night, there was no finishing touch to any of our moves. Rooney didn't look like he would score, Crouch barely touched the ball, and I understand why he subbed Milner, but I thought it was way too early. We should have won, no question about that, but it's funny when you look back at the England v USA thread, people were predicting England to win 4-0 and so on. Instead of bringing Crouch on, he should have brought Defoe on, maybe his pace would have done the job against a less than mobile US backling.

I cannot believe I am about to say this.......Heskey was our best player last night.

i disagree i think gerrard was the best his goal was quality and the tackles he repeatedly made were world class but i agree heskey played well

and for the record i said the match would be 1-1 or 2-2.

KEEP THE BALL - KEEP THE BALL - KEEP THE BALL !

Are our footballers dense or what ?

Against Spain/ Brazil/ Argentina England will get ripped up if they persist in the horrible longball which inevitably gets picked off by the opposition. Last night they where just giving pocession away because of a lack of patience & discipline. Stevie G for instance was continually trying tp play 25 yd keyhole forward passes through gaps that were'nt there ( 'looks for killer balls often' but did'nt have the creativity or technique to make them work for the most part).

It's quite simple when you think about it: short simple passes & make the opposition work until they make a mistake. This is'nt the 100 mph Premier League - we're up against technically superior teams largely - it's a whole new level

why TF did he not play joe cole on the left? milner was clearly ill. then he brings a right footed player who hasnt been on his best form for about 6 years on. ignoring joe cole who is a better player and has proved he has a great undertanding with ashley cole on the left.

Having said that i thought there were some positives. we were far better thsn the USA and would surely have won if it hadnt been for green's error. gerrard was brilliant and lampard solid. heskey was great as well. glen johnson showed why he has cemeted his RB spot( albeit with little competition) lennon looked lively but once again lacked end product and the defence was generally solid.

a draw is not the end of the world, although it is dissapointing as only one team went to win the match. i feel we are good enough to beat both slovenia and algeria, but we may struggle against more talented opposition unless we sharpen up our finishing and crossing

Suprised people are so negative about a game, if it wasn't for a shocking peice of goalkeeping we would have won the game easily, we held the USA at arms length pretty much through out the game and we could have scored 2 or 3. Heskey had a great game, his through ball for the goal was sublime and if it the one on one had fallen to anyone else then we'd have probably won the game. In my opinion it was a good start for the team out field but extremely troubling in goal obviously.

i must admitt that i didn't expect so many respondes to this thread but i believe that england can reach the final... good luck lads
