I was welcomed back to the hotel with a letter. It was a hand-written one by Estela from back in Portugal. It read:

Hi Michael, hope you’re doing okay.

I’ve decided to visit England and you within the next week. Maybe we can see the Wembley stadium and go to a bar or something.

Look forward to seeing you!

Estela xx

Her English isn’t 100% perfect, but I understood it. But within the next week I shall be moving to Amesbury. I had to phone her to let her know shortly.

. . . . .

We had a little conversation, and I told her I’d be unable to meet her (in London, anyway) and because I have no house yet, she wouldn’t be able to stay. And I really didn’t fancy asking her to come back to a hotel room. So any meeting has been put on hold for now until I am financially safe.

I have only four days to get ready for my big welcoming. I can’t wait to tell the truth. Nobody knows it’s me yet apart from Mr Rhodes and whoever he’s told, and my friends, of course.

Michael Dale, Manager

Nice ring.

Michael Dale, Player/Manager

Oh **** off.

NICE.

Any hints as to what position your playing?
;)

Keep going.

D/WB R, DM, AMC by any chance? :P

Got that from the text after your username anyway...

Drove back down to the town today, and booked my hotel. I knew that it would be the final time I left London to go elsewhere. I was a little shaky this time around – not because of nerves, but because of the traumatic time I had in Portugal; I didn’t really fancy a repeat of that.

The hotel was very shabby. I say shabby, it was quite nice, but the feeling was cold, and old. It’s a three-star hotel, with no breakfast or any other meal included – I just couldn’t afford that much.

Because this manager’s job I’m contracted to is a part-time one, I’m getting no wages, and I will only be seeing my team on four occasions throughout the week – one on the match day, twice in training and one on the night before the match, for motivation, tactical discussions and the like. I can’t afford anything greater than what I’m going for, so I’ll need a job to go with it.

. . . . .

I set my suitcases down on the bed and gazed out the window – a large oak tree, an endless stretch of green, green grass and a swing sat in one corner was pretty much all I could see. This used to be an old house – a grand one I would imagine – but now it’s a creepy hotel. And I’m standing in it.

I met the whole team today, with the reserves present also. They’re a great bunch of lads. The only thing they were lacking was the presence of a manager, but hopefully that can be changed when I officially join them tomorrow.

I’ve also decided to sit out the game on Saturday to see what can be made of the team. I join tomorrow (Friday) with their next match on the immediate day after, so with no knowledge of the club or nothing to go by when selecting formations, it’ll be pretty hard to conjure up magic on the first day.

That’s all for now. I suppose the next time you lot will hear from me will be after the unveiling tomorrow. Wish me luck!

It is now three-thirty in the afternoon and I’m back at the hotel, sitting and smiling in my best looking shirt and tie. It went swimmingly, thank ****. Not once had I imagined that a small a club as Amesbury could hold such a big press conference. I was sat in front of 13 journalists, all slashing at their papers with their biros, recording every single syllable that exited from my mouth.

It felt great. I was warm – everybody welcomed me with a grin. I answered questions on my past, the present and the future, what I expected the club would be like at the end of the current season, the next, the fifth..

I’m particularly impressed by the club throughout. I was asked if I’d be bringing any of my own personal staff in.

Yeah, Luis Figo and Carlos Queiroz!

I was also asked about how I’d felt over the decision of becoming a player, too. I lied to them – I said I couldn’t wait to get out there. I didn’t mention my injuries or lack of kicking a ball. I just said I wanted to get my boots on and play football.

...My boots!

****, my boots are in my suitcase, the suitcase that got stolen in Portugal!

Off to the shops I pop, then..
