FC Porto - Return To Glory

Run Of Form Continues For FC Porto

After a month of nine straight wins in January FC Porto wouldnt have dreamt of repeating the feet in February. But through sweat and determination they managed to record another perfect month with six straight wins. The team scored a magnificent 21 goals and conceded 5 which saw them advance in the europa league and take a great lead in the Premier League.

Player Of The Month

Lucas Andersen at the age of 19 could be excused for taking his time to make an impact in the FC Porto first team but this month he has made sure that his name is one of the first on the team sheet. With 3 goals this month giving him a total of 10 for the season Andersen has turned into a vital part of the team and shown that he will be in the first team for years to come.

Can FC Porto Turn The Deficit Around

Having progressed past Dinamo in the last round FC Porto drew one of the favourites in the next round in Zenit. The first leg did not go their way however with Zenit taking a 3-1 win. The only light that came from the forst leg was an away goal scored by Mattia Destro which means that they need to win by two clear goals and keep a clean sheet. If Zenit score then Price's mean must score three more goals than them.

Do you think they can do it?

Drama, Drama, Drama as FC Porto Advance

FC Porto 3 - Zenit St 0
Mattia Destro '29 '36 '84
Hulk s/o '17, Alex Sandro s/o '45

With the task of having to come back from a 3-1 away loss ahead of Price's team mamy pundits wrote them off. But the heart of FC Porto never allowed their team to believe that the tie was over. The task was made slightly more realistic when ex Porto player Hulk was sent off for a second booking, before Mattia Destro took charge of the game with two goals before the break. The 2 nil score line would have been enough to see FC Porto through bu this was put in jeapordy when Sandro was sent off after 45 minutes. The tension was eased finally around the Estadio De Dragao when Destro completed a wonderful hat-trick in he 84 minute mark in a performance that saw him claim Player of the match.

Brilliant March For FC Porto

FC Porto's form since the turn of the year has been nothing but brilliant and this didnt change during the month of March. They won 5 of their 7 games this month, drawing one with their only loss coming in the away leg of the Europa league second knockout round. During the month they scored 20 and conceded 10. The month saw Porto advance to the final of the League cup in which they will play SL Benfica and to the quarter final of the Europa League in which they play Valencia

Player Of The Month

Mattia Destro is the most in form striker not just in Portugal but in the world at the moment scoring in 15 of his last 18 games and knocking in 29 goals in 39 games this season. This month Destro added 8 goals to his tally for the season and put in match winning performances. He scored all 4 of Porto's goals in the Europa League tie against Zenit and is keeping Bony well in the shadows this season.

You could be forgiven for thinking that the Europa Cup is destined for FC Porto this season after their latest miraculous escape act in the quarter final. After yet anoth first leg loss away to Valencia when they went down 4-2 the boss once again told his players not to lose hope. And when Destro and Nem scored for Porto without reply Price's words proved to be right. Porto will now play Tottenham Hotspur in the semi finals and the fans will be dreaming of a European Final

FC Porto Storm To Title

A month of mxed emotions for FC Porto in April as they secured the Premier league title, a final in the Taca De Portugal and a semi final against Tottenham in the Europa League but also lost a cup final to SL Benfica. Price will see the month as a highlight of his career so far as it saw him advance the furthest he has ever done so in europe. Porto won 5 of their 8 games during the month, drawing 2 and losing 1.

Player Of The Month

The signing of Andre Schurrle during the January Transfer window stirred a lot of people into believing that FC Porto could win the Europa Cup. And this month the performances put in by this man showed that that is entirely possible. Schurrle scored 5 times during the month taking his total to 10 for the club in just 18 appearances. Keeping Schurrle on form will be key to more success this season

Although FC Porto had secured the title a few weeks ago they were officially crowned the Premier League titles for the fourth time in a row in the mon th of May. It was Price's second consecutive title winning it both seasons at the club so far. The month also saw them life the Taca De Portugal with a three nil win over Moreirense and also lose in the semi final of the Europa League to eventual winners Tottenham Hotspur. They won 3 of the four games in the month scoring 10 and conceding 3 in the process.

Premier League

Estoril 0 FC Porto 5 Goals: Destro, Bressan, Nem, Andersen, Rolando

FC Porto 2 Vit Setubal 0 Goals: Maicon 2)

Taca De Portugal

FC Porto 3 Moreirense 0 Goals: Destro(2), Schurrle

Europa League

Tottenham 3 FC Porto 0

(Tottenham win 4-1 on aggregate and go on to win the cup)

Player Of The Month

Mattia Destro was a free transfer in the summer so Price would never have imagined that he would score 36 goals in 47 games this season. Another fine month in May saw him score 3 times in 4 games including a brace in the Taca De Portugal final.

Player Analysis

During the course of the season a number of players have staked their claim for a first team spot. More than 11 players have proved their worth to the club and this is how they have done it;

Fabiano - 55 games and 23 clean sheets - 7.05
Alex Sandro - 42 games and 17 assists - 7.45
Ginter - 44 games with 5 goals ans 4 assists - 7.56
Maicon - 43 games with 9 goals and 4 assists - 7.68
Danio - 38 games with 4 goals and 10 assists - 7.51
Koke - 46 games with 1 goal and 8 assists - 7.24
Simao - 39 games with 5 goals and 5 assists - 7.32
Schurrle - 21 games with 11 goals and 8 assists - 7.45
Gotze - 27 games with 4 goals and 7 assists - 7.17
Varela - 39 games with 16 goals and 12 assists - 7.38
Destro - 47 games with 36 goals and 5 assists - 7.47
Andersen - 44 games with 13 goals and 8 assists - 7.16
Bressan - 32 games with 11 goals and 6 assists - 7.29

You can clearly see why FC Porto had such a strong season with their starting 11 being backed up by a few very impressive players. The pick of the players were Maicon and Destro who scored a combined 45 goals and 9 assists.

Player Of The Year

Its clear that there are many candidates for the player of the season but the one player who has stood out more than the rest and helped to ensure the season was such a ssuccess was Mattia Destro. His goals have propelled FC Porto to a league and cup treble as well as a European Semi final. Mattia also made his Italy Debut scoring twice on his first cap.

Young Player Of The Year

There are a number of young players at FC Porto who impressed this season, but none more than young Danish attacker Lucas Andersen. At the age of just 18 Andersen made an immediate impact at the Estadio De Dragao scoring 13 goals in his first season. This is made even more remarkable when you consider that most of his games were from the bench.

Price's Views On The Season

'This season has seen us make a large amount of progression, the signings we have made have both added depth to the squad in the case of Andersen as well as in my opinion added that final piece of class to the squad in reference to Schurrle and Gotze. I believe that this season we have layed the foundations that will help us progress next season and i am confidnt that we can progress past the group stage of the champions league'.

'I am more than happy with our domestic form this season with the onyl disapointment coming in the league cup final that we lost. Other than that though the domestic form was almost perfect. The amount of goals we scored this season was very impressive with more than the attackers chipping in with goals'.

'The signing that i was most happy with this season was the free acqusition of Mattia, his goals were vital to our form this season and i believe he can become a world class striker for the future. The club is in a very good position to press forward from here and i can not wait to progress as the FC Porto manager'.

Pre season begun, report and transfer deals up soon. Let me know how its going so far?

Midfield Duo Leave For Spain and Italy

FC Porto's midfield duo Varela and Rodriguez have left the club and headed for Real Madrid and Napoli respectively. The Columbian Rodriguez has signed for Real for £20,000,000 after he fell out of favour with Price following the signings of Gotze and Schurrle. Varela on the other hand was moved on due to his advancing years, with players like Nem, Kelvin and Andersen its clear to see that when Napoli offered £20,000,000 for the player the manager was left with no real decision.

The money made from these deals is said to be kept back for later transfer windows as Price doesnt feel the need to add to his squad.

He had a great first half of a season for me in the first season but with Andersen, Nem, Bressan, Gotze, Varela, Adryan and kelvin he just wasnt cutting it!
