Won champions league premier league and carling cup with Newcastle in second season and found that all need to change with the tactic is the match prep to defensive positioning before real tough away games that's all and my assistant does team talks. The best result was beating real Madrid in champions league final 6-1 and was 4-0 up by 20 mins.starting third season 2moz. This is one real addictive game and this tactic is awesome

Are you no longer changing the starting strategy and using the retain possession shout? or do you just change match prep now for tough away games?

Thats right just change match prep to defensive positioning before big away games. But don't forget to change back after game. I only needed to do this a few times in the season.I left it to attacking movement for the cup finals btw.

I just wanted to say that I took your advice about doing the defensive positioning (match prep.) before away games. I play with Schalke 04 (season 2022/2023), and my team is being predicted to finish 11th in the league. I started first few games in the season with JP Woody's Germany style tactic (2 wins, 2 defeats in the league), then switched to this tactic with the advice mentioned above. So far played 7 games (6 in the league, 1 in the DFB cup), recording 5 wins and 2 draws. My last two games were away, first to Bayern who is untouchable in the league for years and before meeting my team, they have not conceded for six games. I won the game 4-0, conceding only one shot on the goal. Then after few days I went to Dusseldorf to play DFB cup, and we won 3-0. So, first of all, thanks to JP for producing such great tactic, and then to Daveycrockit for giving the advice about match prep, which I stronglly recommend. If you are interested in screenshots I will upload them. Best regards!

Haha that loss to city in the fa cup must have upset you!

Just started using this now about half way through my season. I've been playing really well with someone elses tactic so far and I'm 8 points clear of city in 2nd place. I opted to use this tactic as I dislike the movement of the other tactic I was using. So far there has been little disruption in implementing this tactic- 4 played-4 wins.

@Woody

I notice you have not altered the long shots setting. Obviously you intended this but I was just shocked to see this setting unaltered as I was convinced that the consensus amongst the top tactic makers (yourself included) was that this setting makes players blast the ball towards goal and giving up possession and the chance for cccs

@Craig Curtis

Did you follow woody's team talk suggestion? or have you left it to assistant? (I started using minimal fuss' rule of thumb team talk guide but i'm finding that its a little too simple for certain situations and I'm better off leaving it to my assistant)

I don't really follow the consensus when it comes to making tactics. They all seem a much of a muchness to me, long shots all on rare, nearly every player on hard tackling and full closing down. It all results in loads of injuries, loads of sending offs and players who's condition barely gets above 80% all season. OK it gets results but its not for me. I much prefer using the wizard now and having lots of fit players to choose from on a 100% condition. No problem with the long shots or the CCCs, Possession good too.

I could not agree more with this, I hate the tactics that utilize heavy tackling and closing down, I dont know how anyone has success with them because my team always become littered with suspended players later in the season!

I've used your tactic for a few games now JP, it's seems strong however obviously I wont know its full potency until I've played with it for half a season or so.

let assistant do team talks mate.

JPWoody:
Im playing as BK Häcken in swedish division 1, predicted 9th first season.
so far we are sitting first, doing really great, with some really really great results. BUT, having some problems with the match prep, was about to change to attacking movement. But the first and second game we lose with big numbers! So for med it works better with an average workload with team focus? Would it take some matches to gel even the match prep?

cheer

I keep it on average all the time. I'm thinking for less gifted sides or teams that don't have stand out forward players that defensive positioning might be the better approach to take, at least until you have some quality forwards.

Not too overly impressed with it so far. I had more success with your Germany style tactic which was really good, especially at the beginning of the season. I started new save with Arsenal to try this tactic and it is the beginning of September, the results haven't been too good. Lost 2-3 to Lille on away ground and 2-0 to Man. City on home ground. Had 4-4 draw with Standard de Liége. 2-2 draw with Laval and have won the rest. Most victories however are 3-2, 2-1. Biggest victory was 4-0 over Colorado Rapids. Will continue my game and will let you know how it goes. I do like the tactic so hopefully the results get better.

Lost 2-0 against Burnley in the first round of Carling Cup...woops. :P

JP, I'm really interested in trying this tactic but have a few questions first:

1. Do any other types of strikers work aside from poachers? My main striker is a target man type Fernando Llorente. Can he be accommodated?

2. I take it the smallest possible pitch dimensions are recommended due to the stand-off instructions set in the team instructions? You want to balance out the lack of pressing by reducing the amount of space instead. Am I right on this?

3. Relating to the second question. Has anyone experimented with setting closing down to default? I ask because it seems like having the player stand-off would make defending too passive.

4. I noticed the trequartista position no longer has roaming enabled. Does this in any way restrict the player in that position since roaming is a pretty big characteristic of that specific role?

Thanks

1. Tried with a few different types of striker, all scored more than a goal a game.

2. Smaller pitches work better for teams who use short passing. Well they do on the game anyway. The AI doesn't seem to like a small pitch.

3. Yes ive tried. Worked ok and probably better defensively but scored less goals. Stand off seems to suck the opposition in. That's why quick wingers is a must.

4. No i don't think so. Feel free to give him a free role and see the difference, ive not tried it.
