Bayer Leverkusen mid-season review

View attachment 47576Leon Bailey has been the star man for Leverkusen this season, along with Kevin Volland

Leverkusen have enjoyed a stellar start to their season in the Bundesliga under their new owner and manager. Sitting in 2nd in the Bundesliga 6 points behind Bayern and 6 points ahead of Schalke, they'll definitely be looking to mount a title challenge and look to dethrone Bayern and win their first ever Bundesliga title but it could be tough.

View attachment 47575
The Bundesliga table halfway through the season

With the best attack in the league and the second best defence level with Schalke, Leverkusen definitely have a good second half of the season to look forward to. With the club's 3 defeats coming in the first month in the league (between 28th of August and 30th of September), the players in the team finally got used to playing with each other and it seems like Ancelotti finally found the perfect way to run the team and it's only been great ever since. The one negative to take from Ancelotti's performance so far however is getting knocked out of the DFB-Pokal in just the 3rd round by Mainz on penalties.

Some great results for Leverkusen along the way, like big wins against Schalke and Dortmund, as well as a draw against Bayern in December

No European football has also certainly been an advantage for Leverkusen, who unlike teams like Dortmund and Leipzig, haven't had mid-week games at all other than the domestic cup games and can definitely use that to their advantage later in the season as well. Here's what Leverkusen's chairman had to say about his club's performances so far:

"We've had a good start to my reign here at the club and I'm really happy with Carlo. He struggled a little bit at the beginning but did really well to come back and change things up and has now put us in a fantastic position not only for Champions League football next season but also for a potential title if we keep this kind of form up! I'm also really happy that he's used most of the signings made over the summer and happy that they've all done pretty well so far, with the exception of one or two players who haven't really impressed yet."

In terms of individual performances, Bailey and Volland are the two main men for Leverkusen this season, without a doubt.

View attachment 47572
Bailey's stats this season so far

With just 4 goals and 3 assists in 16 games, Bailey hasn't made the most amazing goal contribution so far but he's been a key player due to his presence on the pitch and ability to change games. At just 20 years old, the Belgian is doing some incredible damage already and will hope he can keep his form up throughout the second half of the season.

View attachment 47571
Volland's stats this season so far

With 8 goals, Kevin Volland is the 3rd top goalscorer in the league, level with Füllkrug of Hannover who's scored 8 goals from just 2 more games. It's been a good season for the German so far, so much so that Totteham and Liverpool are reportedly interested in the striker and might even make a move for him this summer if Ancelotti allows it due to the club's poor financial situation. Hopefully for the chairman's sake this doesn't happen!

As for the transfer list, here's who the chairman wants to get rid of:

Julian Baumgartlinger (asking price £5 million), Charles Aránguiz (asking price £20 million)

Borussia Mönchengladbach - Mid Season Review

The BMG fans will be unhappy with their team's current situation in the league as they lie in 10th place, 6 points behind the closest Champions League qualifying place. Fans have also been unhappy at the style of football played. The start to the season was dreadful and as a result just a few weeks ago Dieter Hecking was sacked. Speculation is that owner Desmond Pugh has been in talks with a new manager with everyone kept guessing. A press conference later this evening will announce the new man at the helm tasked with improving the club's season.

Speculation on Thorgan Hazard leaving the club has continued and whoever does come in will be asked to persuade the star to stay until the summer at least.

if he does go and Pugh fails to assign a manager who will guide them to European football a tough summer awakes. The initial target is the club to get back in to European football and failure to this may mean a mass exodus from the club.

Their have been little to cheer for this season as of yet but after a dismal start it can only get better for a club who possesses such quality as this.

One flicker of hope has been the form of Raul Ruidiaz. He has topped the charts for scoring this season for the club and has started to pay back his 11.5 Million fee.

New comer Raul Ruidiaz as impressed with 9 goals in 15 games.

I think you can pretty much get the players folk want to transfer list and move on lol

I have players to sell but not entertaining any deals for my prospects that folk would want so its all done for me lol
Was gonna suggest this as well.. Seeing as no one has enough money to make any deals, we could easily just move on from this window tbh... Never much happening in the winter windows anyway due to the big amounts spent in the summer!

Mid Season Review

As the new Koln owner, I have to say I'm extremely pleased with our performance so far this season. Our league form sees us sitting in 6th position at the half way stage, with an outside shot at pushing the top teams in the league for a Champions League place.....yea, I know it's ambitious but you've gotta aim high right!

View attachment 47570

Our highlights of the league campaign so far have without a doubt been the 3-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund and a 2-1 away win at Leipzig!

View attachment 47569

As far as Europe goes, we were handed the so called group of death, but we managed to come through it as group runners up behind Fenerbahce. A 4-0 victory at home to Club Brugge being the highlight of our European results and we will now face Galatassaray in the knockout stages, a tough but winnable draw!

View attachment 47568

As far as individual performances go, its 39 year old Claudio Pizarro that continues to show the way to the younger lads. The veteran striker has 8 goals, 2 assists and 3 man of the match awards to his name this season! New signing Dominik Kohr has been solid in the centre of midfield and has settled into life at Koln very well. 19 year old prospect Dennis Man has been impressive also, scoring 6 goals and creating another 6 from his 22 appearances and has more than tripled his value already. I am slightly disappointed though that Laurent Blanc has only given Wout Weghorst and Luca Zuffi 4 games between them this season, when they cost us a combined £13.5 million in the Summer.

Mainz mid-season update

Half way into the season and almost everything is going well in Mainz. 8th in the table and into the quarter final of the cup looks like a good first half but there has yet to be a regular run of form and only 21 goals in 17 leagues games is not the greatest return from almost £30 million of summer investment.

A good return of points from the first half of the season bolds well for the 2nd half but lacking consistent form and losing the last 4 games in a row is a worry. The lack of a consistent goal scorer has been the biggest problem holding us back and a new striker will need to be the target, probably not until the summer but if a deal can be found in January then that would be the perfect. With the next three games being Frankfurt, Hannover and Augsburg I hope to see that 4 game losing streak break and for us to push back up the table. The target at the start of the season was to qualify for European football which seemed a high target but right now it is looking like a real possibility.

3 rounds, 3 away games, 3 wins. Each round the result has got closer and closer from 2-1, 2-1 after et and a win on penalties against Leverkusen which also came after the cb Diallo was sent off in just the 2nd minute. The quarter final round is another away tie against Hoffenheim which will be a hard tie but if we can beat Leverkusen with 10 men then we should go into that game with some confidence.

Transfers

It may not be the busiest window for most clubs but I do have a few free transfers and loan players that clubs may be interested, especially teams who are lower down and looking for a change of fortunes.

DM Nigel De Jong FREE – Still a good player and seen as a 3.5 star player by the assistant at Mainz.

ST Karl-Heinz Lappe FREE – Experienced two-footed striker who is 4th choice in a 1 striker tactic.

CB Leon Balogun FREE – Nigerian CB who I was hoping to make some money off but his contract runs out at the end of the season so welcome to anyone who wants him.

AM Gonzalo Maroni LOAN – Young AM who has great potential but doesn’t seem to be valued high enough by our current manager to give him some game time. Hopefully some game time somewhere else will boost his value to the manager.

ST Maximiliano Romero LOAN – Very similar to Maroni as he just isn’t getting the game time I was hoping for.

If you do have any money or are maybe interested in a swap deal then the following players are also available.

AM Alexandru Maxim
LW Pablo De Blassis
DM Jean-Philippe Gbamin
CM Mathias Jensen
LW Karim Onisiwo
AM Robin Quaison
ST Emil Berggreen

Werder Bremen

The table says it all.. 2 new strikers, only 14 goals scored in total, a complete and utter shambles.

On the bright side, still half a season to go right? The only way is up! Or down, I suppose.

The club has no money for transfers, so will go ahead with the current manager and squad.

Florian Kohfeldt, our lives are in your hands, and you have butter fingers?!?!

It’s not been a great start for Dortmund yet it was all so promising when a 3-1 win against Bayern (their only defeat of the season) put us into third place.

View attachment 47536

But then a loss to Schalke in the cup sent us on a downward spiral of not winning any of our next 6 league games and we’re now in 7th.

View attachment 47534

If it weren’t for Champions League form Peter Stoger would’ve been sacked. Dortmund unluckily finished second in their group despite winning 5 games and the prize for doing so is Real Madrid in the next round

View attachment 47532

It’d be nice if we didn’t lose to bottom club Bremen again and it’d be even nicer if Harry Kane could improve on his 7 goals in 17 league games. Hopefully Marco Reus can do some damage when he’s back for 6 weeks.

In terms of transfers the following two players are available for loan.

Jadon Sancho – AML – Wage of £22,500 a week
Matthijs De Ligt – CB – Wage of £13,250 a week

Question for you all, would you be interested in or would like a mid-year and/or end of season review for the whole league from a "magazine type/ pundit" style format

Wouldn't mind seeing that, star ratings for my team might be ***** though xD

Like that idea, especially since I already try to make my updates seem a little like that!

If you're in debt can you sack your manager and replace him with a manager that is already at a foreign club? Or can you only replace him with an unemployed manager?
Asking for a mate...

There's no restrictions against this. Only transfers. Bit of a loophole but nothing stopping it happen. Teams in administration change manager all the time in the real world.

Was gonna suggest this as well.. Seeing as no one has enough money to make any deals, we could easily just move on from this window tbh... Never much happening in the winter windows anyway due to the big amounts spent in the summer!

The only reason i have not is so everyone has 24 hours to send in there pre contract offers and transfer listed players.

Sounds like a great idea

Will do my next well overdue update tomorrow, been really busy today

BUNDESLIGA MID-SEASON REVIEW

Bayern top of the class but Augsburg and Bremen are getting schooled

Time to assess how each club has perfomed so far this season

With the half-way point of the Bundesliga season Kicker Magazine have assessed who is head for prefect and who looks like they may be dropping dow a class....

AUGSBURG

Augsburg started collecting five out of a possible nine points, but it has all been downhill from there. That early point collection was a false dawn and has not been enough to clear up the serious issues surrounding the club. One win in the next fourteen games would see most managers removed, but somewhat remarkably neither coach Manuel Baum nor the board has flinched as of yet. With issues surrounding player unrest and fans turning against the club, there is frankly no reason to believe they will turn this around. They do not have the skill of Bremen, the firepower of Freiburg, the unity of Hamburg or the organisation of Hertha. Short of a new manager and new squad they are heading down fast.

Best Result: 1-0 vs RBL

Worst Result: 0-2 vs Hannover

Player of the season so far: Daniel Baier

GRADE:
D -
A lost cause surely

BAYERN MUNICH

The team that has dominated German football like no other looks set to be top of the class once more this term as Jupp Heynckes kept the team that has won the Bundesliga for the last five years in a row at the top. Their Champion's leagues exploits have not set the world alight, but take nothing away from a side who have set their stall out by shutting out the opposition at the back with a league best of only eleven goals conceded thus far. A six point gap is not that big in normal circumstances but when that six point gap belongs to Bayern it almost seems very likely that they will make it six from six.
Best Result: 3-0 vs Hamburg

Worst Result: 1-3 vs Dortmund

Player of the season so far: Robert Lewandowski

GRADE A- Excellent work so far but not quite perfect.

BMG

It's been a bumpy season so far for BMG. Four defeats in their opening six games was not the start the club had hoped for under new owners. Heading into December the club were hovering over the relegation zone, which prompted the dismissal of Dieter Hecking. With the club recording their first back to back wins of the season over Bremen and Mainz respectively. Pugh has acted to install former Germany and USA national coach Jurgen Klinsmann as manager. Things may be looking up for BMG but the club still has plenty of obstacles to over come. Given the inherent frailties of the team and the burden carried by Raul Ruidiaz, BMG need to tread steady to avoid slipping down the league.
Best Result: 3-0 vs Dortmund

Worst Result: 0-2 vs Hannover
Player of the season so far: Raul Ruidiaz

GRADE C- By no means out of the woods yet but certainly on the up.

BREMEN

Bremen are in disarray with no real light at the end of the tunnel. The side have just managed three victories from the first half of the season and currently sit bottom of the league on thirteen points. Things are looking bleak by all accounts. The problem it seems runs deeper then Kohfeldt's mis-management. The identity and cohesion of that once underpinned the club has dissipated, with the club's new signings struggling to make a impact. Unless a window of opportunity arises this month the relegation looks all but certain.

Best Result: 2-1 vs Dortmund

Worst Result: 1-3 vs Frankfurt

Player of the season so far: Max Kruse

GRADE E Out of sorts and out of hope.

DORTMUND

Pre-season expectations put Dortmund second to Bayern, and given that they have slipped up this season, there's no reason why Dortmund shouldn't be top of the bundesliga by the half way mark. But instead there's an air of familiarity to their campaign and they head into the new year fifteen points behind Bayern. Munich have been impressive but everyone remembers Dortmund's 3-1 win over them but they simply never built on that result and only one win in seven has followed.

Best Result: 3-1 vs Bayern

Worst Result: 0-3 vs BMG

Player of the season so far: Harry Kane

GRADES C
Needs to show their will to work to fulfil their potential

FRANKFURT

For the first time in a while Frankfurt fans can relish seeing their club in the top four of the bundesliga at the halfway stage. Despite it only being 17 games in, it feels as if something special is brewing at Waldstadion. The board are optimistic but understand how close the run in will be with just seven points seperating 4th-12th. Whatever happens it makes a change from mid table obscurity.

Best result of the season: 3-2 vs Leverkusen

Worst result of the season:0-2 vs Koln

Player of the season so far: Sebastien Haller

GRADE A- Going about their work beautifully

FREIBURG

After defying gravity last term, Freiburg are feeling its heavy force this season. They have reverted back to their old bottom-half selves. Throw in the added distraction of Europa League football which ended before the year and all the energy has been sapped out of Freiburg's league campaign. They have only won four games and float in and around the relegation places. Freiburg now have the serious task of trying to stay in the Bundesliga and not be relegated and undo all the work of last season.

Best Result: 3-1 vs Hamburg

Worst Result: 1-4 vs Leverkusen

Player of the season so far: Nils Peterson

GRADE D Weighed down by the pressure of success from last term.

GELSENKIRCHEN (SCHALKE 04)

Schalke's powerful and domineering perfomance last week against Hertha was a stark reminder of the side's ability. After losing on the opening day, Schalke have fought back with fifteen points out of the last twenty one. For a side who have struggled mentally at times a corner seems to have been turned. With the league seemingly out of reach Champion's League football is an immediate target but consistency is vital. Their next game against Leverkusen will undoubtedly confirm whether or not Schalke are up now up for the test.

Best Result: 3-0 Hoffenheim

Worst Result: 0-3 Leverkusen

Player of the season so far: Eugene Konoplyanka

GRADE B Still up there among the league's elite, despite sporadic set back.

HAMBURG

Hamburg have always looked to be one of the more settled sides in mid-table, but that hasn't been the case this year. They have the worst away record in the division with six defeats from eight visits to away grounds this term. With no signings in the summer investment is needed. If this happens then Bundesliga survival should be on the cards but only if the teams below them do not hit form.

Best Result: 3-0 Hannover

Worst Result: 1-3 Freiburg

Player of the season so far: Nicolai Muller
GRADE D- Must do better in second half of term to stay in the class.

HANNOVER

Hannover looked like they were still celebrating their promotion to the Bundesliga in the early stages of the season. Not winning a game until game six against BMG. Since they have improved with a run of four successive victories, only to undo this by now finding themselves on a winless run of six games. The target for Hannover has to be survival and currently they will achieve but their defensive frailty will be a worry for any manager.

Best result: 2-0 Hertha

Worst Result: 0-3 Hamburg

Player of the season so far: Niclas Fullgrug

GRADE C Must try harder and concentrate more.

HERTHA

Six defeats out of seventeen dosen't seem so bad but couple that with a league high of seven draws and that means Hertha have only managed only four wins this term. Hertha's struggle in the league has not transferred over to the continental stage however. They topped their group and now face a winnable tie in Portugal. New signings haven't had a look in as new manager Marcelo Bielsa has trusted old boys such as Kalou and Ibisevic. Berlin will be confident they achieve survival but must make sure that any European dream does not serve as a distraction.

Best Result: 3-2 vs Leverkusen

Worst Result: 0-2 vs Hannover

Best player of the season so far: Vedad Ibisevic

GRADE D+ Better in foreign languages then domestic class.

HOFFENHEIM

Julian Nagelsmann, one of the class favourites, has his side paying attractive football that has won a lot of fans in Germany. They took centre stage when they beat dismantled high flying Koln in the German Cup last week and are threatening to break into the top four. Hoffenheim's transfer business looks astute, non more so then the loan signing of Liverpool's Ragnar Klavan. The foundation has been built for a good second half to the season.

Best Result: 3-1 vs Hannover

Worst Result: 0-2 vs Hamburg

Player of the season so far: Ragnar Klavan

GRADE B Continuing to build on last year and maturing with age.

KOLN

Koln have thrown up a pleasant surprise to the Bundesliga this season. They have developed a reputation as one of the league's toughest teams to beat and the margins by which they have lost to the big guns certainly testifies to this. A narrow 1-0 Loss to Leverkusen partnered with a spirited 1-1 draw with Schalke 04 demonstrates this. This has not been the case in Europe but arguable in the tightest group they qualified on goal difference to the knockout stages. Despite media tips to fall away they have remained in the hunt for Champion's League football. They couldn't could they?

Best Result: 3-1 vs Dortmund

Worst Result: 0-3 vs Mainz

Player of the season so far: Claudio Pizarro

GRADE A Have proved many critics wrong so far this term.

To be continued.......

It's been a roller-coaster journey for Bielsa so far during his short time at Hertha. Initially brought in to utilise a 532 formation, Bielsa has reverted to playing 4231, which hasn't best pleased the board. After some promising results early on, our Bundesliga form just simply isn't good enough, and we're far too inconsistent. As it stands currently we're looking over our shoulder precariously, and we're desperate to pull away from the bottom half.

View attachment 47522

Performances and results in the Europa league haven't been much better either. with 2 games to go we were bottom of our group, and facing elimination. However, a late Ibisevic winner away to AEK and with a 3-1 victory over Bordeaux in our last game we snuck through.

View attachment 47521

We now face portuguese side Vit. Guimaraes in the last 32.

Star Player = Darida
View attachment 47520

One shining light in a poor performing squad is this man. Valued at 17m, Darida has certainly impressed this season, and I'd dread to think where we'd be without him. His performances have attracted the attention of Atletico Madrid. Hopefully Bielsa see's right now he could be a huge factor in staying up, though with our finances as poor as they are, he may be tempted to sell.

Cmon Marcelo, save our season...and your job!

BREAKING NEWS

Hertha Berlin have called the national media and are about to announce some breaking news!

"Ladies and Gentlemen, like many clubs around the country, our financial situation isn't the best, and consequently there isn't any funds for transfers. That being said we are in a position where we're struggling in the league, and face a battle for the rest of the season. Throw in the added pressure/games of the Eurpoa League, and it's clear we could do with some reinforcements. I'm delighted we have struck an agreement with Stonecold and RBL for the loan signings of 2 of their younger players.

View attachment 47518

We hope they can come in and revitalise the group. Bruma especially is a player who on his day can be a match winner.....and with his wages, he wants to be good!!
