Bundesliga review: Leverkusen

View attachment 46497
Welcome to the Bundesliga mid-season review! On today's show we'll be looking at Leverkusen and how their journey with Carlo Ancelotti has gotten on. With a 2nd-place finish last season and mounting a title challenge for much of last season, the expectations were high for die Werkself but an unexpected move from Dortmund to sign Manuel Neuer triggered a chain reaction which saw Bernd Leno leaving the club, with new signing Pavlenka now the first choice keeper. Despite his obvious talent, he is of course a long way away, ability wise, from Leno so it was always going to be a challenge for Leverkusen to stay as solid as the back this season as they were last season.

All is good in the Bundesliga. Despite the high expectations from the Leverkusen chairman, he is said to be happy with the club's performance as they couldn't spend anywhere near as much as cash machines like Dortmund and Leipzig, so to be competing with them for a top 3 finish is definitely satisfying for him. With the 3rd best defence in the league, it doesn't seem like Leverkusen's defence has taken that much of a toll yet but where they are seemingly lacking is in goals. With the league's 6th best attack and Kasper Dolberg out injured for basically the entire first part of the season, it's looking like Ancelotti will have to start to get the best out of his attacking players to really push for a title challenge this season.

With a relatively easy group in the Champions League, it was widely expected that the German side would make it out of the group. They did, but unfortunately couldn't finish on top of the group despite a last matchday win against Napoli. With the 1st knockout round coming in February being a tie against Chelsea, the Leverkusen chairman has said that he hopes his side can edge it against the current Premier League champions but doesn't think that going out in the 1st knockout round would be that big of a deal, as it would allow the team to focus on the Bundesliga rather than a continental competition.

As for the DFB-Pokal, everything is going to plan. With wins against Karlsruher in the 1st round and a tight victory over Cristiano Ronaldo's Hoffenheim in the 2nd round, Leverkusen did beat Gladbach 2-1 to go through to the quarter-final where they'll face Bayern. They have arguably the hardest job to do to go on to the next round now, although whoever makes it out of the Leverkusen-Bayern and Dortmund-Leipzig clashes are likely to go to the final and face each other for the title.

In terms of the club's signings, the chairman has said to be extremely happy with Gelson Martins' involvement and form. He is, along with Volland, the top goalscorer for the club this season and has overall had a fantastic season. Pavlenka has only kept 3 clean sheets in 16 games which is a big disappointment but has performed quite well other than that. Arana has also been involved quite often and has done well, with a goal and 2 assists in 11 games in all competitions so far. Eggestein and Uodokhai have always gotten their run outs and performed pretty decently, but nothing exceptional as of yet.

Overall, the Leverkusen chairman has communicated with us that he is very happy with this first half of the season considering the somewhat limited spending the club could make in the summer compared to powerhouses like Leipzig, Dortmund and Bayern. He does feel that some players should not be at the club anymore and are therefore available for player exchanges if anyone is able to offer decent replacements.

Karim Bellarabi
Julian Baumgartlinger
Tin Jedvaj

Thank you for reading this week's edition of the Bundesliga review!

Haha touche. You're probably right, you have the world class Tom Trybull in there instead :O

I brought him in to be a cheap backup but he has actually played well. I'm surprised he has been able to push himself into the team. Although if I get the signings I want then he may get dropped for the rest of the season.

Bayern catch up in games and it looks like they have locked down another title. Leverkusen and Dortmund take a grip on the champions league spots but there are still 7 teams in striking distance.

Asensio! Get to **** Bayern. some got bank builders as a couple of teams get some good bank building sales that will help out with the summer budget.

Don't worry about it mate, I'm sure everyone is kept busy by the World Cup games right now anyway! if you don't have time to do it today either it's really not a problem, don't overwork yourself :)

2nd half of Season 2

No let up from Bayern but Leverkusen and Dortmund have a glimmer of hope. As for the rest well the usual 4 points between 5 teams with a few more right behind. The bottom un owned teams look gone but Ingolstadt have the jump of Mainz and Frankfurt for the playoff spot

Champions League
View attachment 46175
Schalke & Bayern have hope for there second legs despite not getting wins. Leverkusen are out without a miracle

Europa League
View attachment 46174
We were almost wiped out. Stuttgart kept some pride, Hoffenheim with Ronaldo and Leipzig with Griezmann do not. Dortmund are the last team standing and have Valencia in the last 16

March
View attachment 46173
Its down to Leverkusen to take the fight to Bayern now. 6 points and 7 games left. Dortmund should be safe in 3rd while Dortund will have to get back on track soon with Hoffenheim and Leipzig closing the gap with Stuttgart, Koln, Hertha all not out of the champions league places and the next 4 teams looking for Europa league spots. Freibug & Mainz have edged away from the bottom 4 but nothing is settled yet with Ingolstadt in a major downwards trend. Interestesting race for the golden boot and Ave rating title. Lewandowski is the only man to also feature on the assist top 3.

Champions League
View attachment 46172
Bayern are the last team standing in the Champions League as Schalke's season can now go down as a failure as they go out to Ajax. Leverkusen were humped!

Europa League
View attachment 46171
Dortmund see of Valencia with relative ease. Another tougher Spanish adventure awaits in Atletico

April
View attachment 46170
Bayern are awaiting there crown once again while Ronaldo makes the difference taking Hoffenheim clear in 4th to join Leverkusen & Dortmund in the Champions League next season. Anyone's guess who'll be in the Europa league. Dresden will finish bottom, Still without a win! Hannnover are in big trouble but not doomed yet. Frankfurt are right on Ingolstadts tail.

Europa League

Bayern make it to the final four of the Champions League but Dortmund are out emphatically by Atletico.

May

So with the top 4 settled they all kind of settled for what they had. Leipzig and the two strongest finishers Schalke and Stuttgart grab the final 2 spots. All the chairmen teams survived which is nice. Ingolstadt also won there play off to survive

German Cup Final
Leverkusen 2-2 Dortmund
Leverkusen win 4-2 on Penaltys

Champions League Final
Bayern almost go back to back but the ghosts of 99 live strong in this result.

You could. Dortmund should! The rest of us are just a level or a Ronaldo behind

Next season could and should see Bayern get a real challenge, although im sure their budget is probably double what Dortmund's is.

A 3RD SUCCESSIVE 4TH PLACE FINISH FOR HOFFENHEIM

It seems that Julian Nagelsmann has Hoffenheim in a quandry. Not good enough to trouble the big 3 clubs but far better than the rest of the league and that is good enough for Champions League qualification. Of course the previous 2 seasons was all about the team and this time it was all about Cristiano Ronaldo.

He has already strengthened his squad with the arrivals of the experienced Chiellini and Pastore but with a limited budget of only £16m it seems it will be a quiet window for Hoffenheim but with so many young players waiting for their chance that may not be a bad thing.

TRANSFER LIST

Pretty much everyone for the right price but I am willing to listen to offers for Cristiano Ronaldo. It doesn't need to be just cash offers - player exchanges will also be considered. For the likes of Dortmund and Leverkusen he could be what you need to take you to the title.

If there are any other players you like from Pastore to Amiri, Kramaric to Baumann just make me an offer!!!!

Hamburg SV - A content chairman?

From his sun bed in Corfu, Hamburg chairman Daniel Porter has announced his satisfaction with the clubs performance this season. Only 6 points behind a European place and a distance from the relegation spots has led to Porter “smiling like an arsehole” at his decision to bring in Niko Kovac as manager. The next step will be to improve on this seasons position, and aim for a European spot.

All players are available for the right price, and a striker with huge pedigree is on the wish list.

Silverware for Leverkusen!

View attachment 46108
After 26 painful years without a trophy, Leverkusen have finally won some silverware thanks to Carlo Ancelotti! His expertise and his experience with German football has finally led die Werkself to a title which, the chairman hopes, will trigger a chain reaction and now really motivate the players to push for the Bundesliga title next season! Three new signings have already been confirmed for next season and they will provide some great quality to a team already full of it.

View attachment 46107
After a season-long battle with Dortmund for second place, the chairman has said he is extremely happy with a 2nd second place finish in a row for the club. When he took charge of this club he wanted to be able to compete for the Bundesliga title and whilst Bayern are still ahead, he is very happy to see that the club is consistently up there with the likes of Dortmund and Hoffenheim hoping for a slip up from Bayern.

View attachment 46106
As for the one bit of silverware for Leverkusen this season, the trophy win is even sweeter since Leverkusen had to beat Bayern on their way to it. A 2-1 win over the German giants with an 85th minute winner from Bailey put them through to the semi-final where they eased past Hannover to get to the final. The game against Dortmund was by no means an easy one and it went down to penalties where die Werkself were crowned the DFB-Pokal champions.

The Champions League was disappointing with a 1st knockout round exit against Chelsea, but they are a good side and have now won the league 3 times in a row, making them an obviously tough side to beat. It did allow the club to focus more on the cup and the league as well, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise as Leverkusen won one of the two competitions!

As for new signings, with just over £100 million to spend, the club could either spend it all on one big player or look to improve weak areas in the side, and that's exactly what they did:

Mateus Vidal - £18.5 million from Corinthians
View attachment 46105
At 21 years old, Mateus is a very impressive attacking midfielder. He's dominated the Brazilian league and will come in and be a perfect fit in that attacking midfielder role which so far was occupied by either Kai Havertz, Giovani Lo Celso or Kevin Volland. He comes in as a bargain buy who will bring in a lot of quality up front, despite no real lack of quality up there already.

Lucas - £41 million from PSG
View attachment 46104

Since his £18.5 million move to PSG last season, Lucas has yet to play a key role at PSG. With Leverkusen lacking a very good centre-back with potential, Lucas comes in for a hefty £41 million but brings both of that to the table. Alongside Tah, they should make up a perfect partnership and be one of the best in the league behind perhaps Boateng and Hummels at Bayern or Koulibaly and Godin at Dortmund.

David Carmona - £6.2 million from Sevilla
View attachment 46103

Despite some great quality at the right-back position through Henrichs, the latter is often injured and means that Lars Bender ends up playing there. As it isn't a natural position for him, it is definitely a challenge and has been difficult for Ancelotti to find a right fit. Carmona comes in for a very cheap £6.2 million and is a natural at right back, right wing-back and right midfielder. He brings in versatility, as well as some depth and first-team quality.

Transfer list

Clément Lenglet - £5 million
Karim Bellarabi - £12 million
Justin Kluivert - £15 million
Johannes Eggestein - loan
Rodrygo - loan
Kevin Volland - negotiable, nothing under £50 million

As always, all players are open to offers. If you think you can make an offer good enough for me to consider, then fire away!

Wolfsburg: Season Review

Domestic Competitions

In The League we had and underwhelming season but also matches our minimum goals. We achieved top half but looked nowhere near good enough for Europe. As i've said on countless occasions the long term aim is stability before trying to move rapidly up the leagues.

View attachment 46101

One this performance the CM Mr Dieter said:
"We have been much better these last two seasons since i have taken over, we look like a Bundesliga team again and not some relegation threatened squad. Again we hope to build on this seasons finish with another jump in league position"

"We also want to have a cup run,we haven't been past the quarters since i took charge and that needs to change"

Thomas Tuchel

View attachment 46100

In accordance with our plans, we are delighted to announce that Thomas Tuchel has signed a new FIVE year deal with the club. This is great news for the club which allows me to explain my long term plans in more depth.
(Plans will be announce in season preview update)

The Squad

The squad review is pretty much the same as the season review. Everyone done their job but no one was spectacular. The only concern is that in game PSG have made an undervalue bid for our best and most consistent performer in Fred hence he will be transfer listed so i can attempt not to get cheated by a low ball offer being accepted in game.

Transfer List

John Brooks - CB - £4m
Jeffrey Bruma - CB - £5m
Asamoah - LWB - £1.5m
Josip Brekalo - L/RW - £9m
Daniel Didavi - CAM - £11m
Renato Steffen - R/LW - £1.1m

Fred - CM/CAM - £28m
