So here is my problem:

There's no point keeping playing the game like this, having stuff like this happen every season. If the game isn't scripted (which I refuse to believe it is), it seems the match engine isn't exactly working well. What gives?

Favorite odds can get stupid, it happens when a good team is performing bad, like say Manchester United are not upto the mark, you'll be favorites to win an away game but away games are ridiculously tough, slightly more than they should be.

Counter attacking or even Attacking on rigid, direct football, more running with the ball works better in these games. Opposition tactics matter too. I used to think it was scripted but I never tried reloading the save. Once I got frustrated and tried it and I usually won the game after rectifying my tactics in second try, even though I always saved the "loss" and reloaded that save to avoid "cheating". Just retried those games to understand tactics and check if the game is scripted and it clearly is not.

This isn't like previous FM's where you could just rocket up the leagues at a whim. From your description it would seem as though your players aren't up to scratch. Persist with the game, complete the seasons and sign some new, better players (especially a decent striker by the sounds of things!)

My players are better than the ones that won promotion. The team I'm having trouble with (Freamunde) was promoted the same year, and I beat them on the previous season. My team is bad for the current league, but theirs is even worse. Surely I should beat them at least once after reloading the match twenty times?

Exactly. This is what a good climb should look like - once you hit the competitive leagues you're going to need sack obsolete players and bring in fresh faces while avoiding relegation. And hit up that board to give you as much money as possible.

And that is exactly what I did.

Thanks for being more constructive than the previous answers. I don't think the game is scripted, but there's clearly something wrong with the match engine. Like I said in another answer, after reloading twenty times I should've got a win, specially since I'm the favorite team to win, and my team moral and quality is superior to the other team. I wouldn't even bother to save/reload if those losses weren't so weird. A quite decent goalkeeper suddenly can't grab the ball, balls "go through" the defenders, and my best players can't complete a pass or receive the ball. I've been playing this game since the first CM, something isn't exactly right here.

You're trying too much: even if some comments are more constructive and others less, it all comes to the same conclusion. It's always your tactics and never the ME ;)

Go Freamunde, go Portugal

Are you saying the ME is responsible for him losing 20 times? Why can't it be something else?

No, you are suggesting that I'm saying that.

As far as I know all the good things that happens with ME affects both user teams as computer teams. Nevertheless, playing 20 times against the same opponent and not winning even one match is quite curious. And this guy says his players motivation was just fine and he has better players.

No.
I tried everything else. My players are good enough, no question about that. I beat the same team the previous season with worse players. I've been drawing with superior teams over and over this exact season. Even if my players are worse, I should be able to beat them 1 ou of 20, right? But they aren't.
I've tried different tactics, different line-ups, different instructions and there's no way I can win this match in which I am a clear favorite. The weird things I see the players do (which I have mentioned before) and also the fact that the match engine has already been "fixed" twice, led me to believe there is still something wrong with the engine.

PS: If you think this is sour loosing, I've also found quite strange how easily I got promoted with a mediocre team. Even after loosing points with ties like crazy. I was unbeatable for nineteen matches the previous season with a team that was expected to get a top half finish on the first phase. Winning the first phase and reaching the promotion phase was already very unexpected. Then I actually won the **** thing. Lol, no, I'm not that good.

I guess your best option is to report that situation at the bugs section of SI Forum and wait around 6 months or so until FM15. And be cautious if you report it, or they will ban you.

Tell you what, upload your save and some of us can see if we can win?

It's not a bug, is it? He just cannot win a game. SI don't ban people over nothing. ****, they give plenty of warnings in the threads and a few infractions before you get banned.

SI seems to be going the EA route. I miss the CM days when every year they only got out a database update and minor fixes. Major updates where only for new releases (CM2, CM3, etc.).
Now it's exactly like EA's F1 games. They force themselves to launch a completely new game every year and never actually fix the issues with last year's game. So instead of a new working game every 3 or 4 years, we get a promising but broken beta every year. This comes at a price for their reputation. And unlike F1, football is a much more popular game and if they don't make a good managing game someone else will. Their history means nothing on the long run in this business.

To make it short, no, they won't get my money again. Fool me once...

What's funny is the only other company that would be interested in making a product to compete with Football Manager is EA...so yea, good luck with that, especially since EA has already stated that FIFA Manager 2014 is the last iteration.

See you next year with FM15!

Or not. As much as I like football and F1, why would I even loose my time playing a broken game? If I wanted to be a beta tester I'd try to get paid for it. Besides, things change. There are other companies making games beside SI and EA. Who knows, maybe someone will try to make it right. If SI could do it once, someone could do it again :)

Hopefully...

Fair enough. Your confidence makes me optimistic.
While you're at it, you could also give me your two cents on how I managed that miraculous promotion on the previous season. Remember, different players, check the transfer history. I always used the SJ Ver 4-3-3 tactic and the slight_favorite instruction preset on every game of the unbeatable run (changed to mantain_result after winning by more than 2). I still have no idea how that happened.

--------

I can't seem to be able to upload the file, compressed or uncompressed (it's 44 Mb). How can I do it?

No, because football is so popular, it's also a cash cow. Only large publishers like EA and Sega can afford to pay the licensing fees associated with football. Any indie game developer can make a football management game, but they would have to ship the game with fake teams and player names. Konami tried this many years ago and it was terrible. Also, the main reason why FIFA > PES is because Konami doesn't shell out enough money to get all licenses, so they have far fewer leagues/players.

The only other large sports game publisher that doesn't have a soccer/football franchise yet is 2K Games...and I don't see 2K Games even touching soccer/football anytime soon since EA is so dominant with FIFA right now.

Use mediafire or something?

P.S. No one gets paid for beta testing...unless you want to beta test a new medicine/drug. |)

I know how that works. I also know there's nothing stopping "me" from posting a database with the real names and teams :)
You can even use real players and teams you just can't use the exact same names. It isn't a big sweat to find out who Christiano Tonaldo or Sebastian Bettel is, lol.

Nope, not anymore they don't. They got paying customers to do that for free. Some are actually happy to do it, lol.

Yea but 90% of ppl will buy the vanilla game and dislike it because most ppl don't want to do anything to extra to play a game. Video game reviewers don't download any add-ons or mods before reviewing a game. And playing with Christiano Tonaldo and Rigar Cassolas would be completely retarded for immersion.
