I lose a lot of possession because my players do not obey the instructions set for:
- throw ins: set short with 5 players nearby, still the ball is thrown to the opponent...especially near the opponents back line...also when I instruct a midfielder to take the throw ins, he sometimes does so when its on the opponents half...the rest is thrown by the full back.

- free kicks: set short with 7 players to stay back, 1 to stand by ball and 2 to go forward...on my own half my goaly takes the free kick which sometimes is taken short but often is a long shot, near the midline its taken as instructed, 35 meters or closer to the opponents goal the tactical instruction is back in the bin and my players position themselves in the opponents box.

- Goalkeeper: set to defender collect (and hold up ball), yet he rarely does so and often waste possession by kicking the ball to the other side of the field for the wrong defenders to collect it.

- Central defenders / full backs: often play short, but when closed down/pressured by oppenent they often just kick the ball (panic balls as I call them) far away while 2-3 team mates were free to pass the ball to.

This happens no matter what team I play with (I tried with Indian Arrows (Indian team), de Graafschap and Barcelona)...not sure if my reputation as coach has any effect on this, as I always play with amateur reputation (pretty easy to declare yourself a top trainer and tactician with international reputation while only playing with the better clubs and players imo).

Any suggestions or tips?

Mmm i understand these mistakes can be frustrating. These mistakes however do occur as a result of a tactical error in your formation or player instructions. Try implementing a 4-2-3-1 and and make sure your playmaker is amc this way you increase the chance of players on the ball being midfielders who can take a bit of pressure and still make a good passes. unfortunately unless you have a team full of world class defenders the slightest bit of pressure will create mistakes in ur defence! on the Gk bit i also have that error in my tactic and sometimes even world class goalkeeepers like valdes will mindlessly punt the ball forward! make sure passing is short and through balls are on so players running into space have more of a chance to recieve the ball. Best of luck and have a look at my West ham 3-7-0 possession story

hey Raikan, the chelsea save became a disaster. I tried loads of different tweaks to get the tactic to be 1) possession & high passing based, while also 2) successful home and away without needing too many changes

unfortunately this led to a 6 game losing streak and me getting fired. I think I tried to achieve too much in a short time as chelsea aren't the best team for a possession tactic (too many players have bad PPMs)

I've decided to go the other way now and go extremely long term with it. I started a Cardiff story the other day, as they have a good base for a possession tactic with good passers, young players with few PPMs, etc. so I'm going to try to develop the philosophy over a number of seasons within the story.

May have been asked before, but is there a successful Narrow 4-2-3-1 kicking around the forum? Most I can find utilize wingers, whereas I'd rather use 3 AMC's in my Dortmund save.

The fundemental flaws that are apperant in your OP are lame and low ;)Thats why you will fail to ever get 1,140 passes ever and one player over 300 passes! Best of luck and in future keep your visitor messages as cheerful :)

HAHHAHAHAHA... cheerio mate ;) take care of yourself, sorry to hear that you have to try and make money off a forum for a lame tactic that clearly does not work for anyone but yourself! :)

As you can see the possession is nice, as is the position play (or however its called lol) but how come my passes are that low?...what did they do with the ball all that time?

I have watched this match the full 90 min and besides my fullbacks running with the ball often ( which is set to rarely ) I have seen a lot of combinations in attempt to create through balls into the box.

I must say that my team is not yet fully trained into this tactic and that I only use the touchline shouts "pass to feet" and "retain possesion" right from the beginning of the match.

Do I judge too quickly and is the passing not that bad? (as I am realy wondering what the heck they were doing with the ball the full 90minutes with 77% possession and so few passes)

Should I use other touchline shouts?

And NO...I am not going to try to earn a buck when I'm done with this tactic :P(A)

possession is possession of the ball, passing is passing and are quite similar ;)

you can have 100% possession of the ball by running around in circles for 90 minutes but 0 passes (you get my analogy?)

give it time, the possession looks good, if you want more passes then you have to edit player instructions, give players rarely everything with medium/high creative freedom and run from deep sometimes/moves into channels and roaming :0

there are a lot of factors that influence passing etc.. but these are fundamentals.. :) good luck

it is sad, I was actually helping him and promoting his tactic before it was even released:

this looks like a very good possession tactic, really looking forward to trying it out! well a good tactic in general!

The only thing I can assume is that it will take at least half a season to get the passing results that you have gotten? a lot of retraining positions as well

This is no longer a story mate, its more of a tactic thread, you should upload it in the OP and ask Dunc/Sean/Lee to move it across! the results look very promising!

I would appreciate it a lot of you would send me the link to try it out as I do like a good possession tactic! I do look forward to it!

well done mate!

Is it just me or does this guardiolaunderstoody seem a bit of a douche ? :) Thinks he is better than everyone who is trying to help him and has the nerve to charge people to download his tactic which after all the fuss is more likely going to be worthless anyway, thats what FM base it about helping people to be better at a game for free, if you want to charge other people for your work then go somewhere else and let the people on this thread continue helping eachother ....... free of charge !! :)
