August Review

A fantastic start to the season. We sit proudly at the top of the league. We've faced three very tough fixtures and have taken all nine points available. The Valladolid result was slightly fortunate but we definitely deserved the win overall. I'm not going to get ahead of myself but I'm hoping we can keep this up for as long as possible.

Not the best of months with two disappointing defeats. We ended on a high note with the win against Murcia. We're still in an excellent position in the league and have plenty of time to build on that.

October Review

An excellent month with only one defeat. We sit in third place and I'm delighted with our season so far. The highlight of the month was the stunning cup win away at Eibar. We've had to dig deep at times this month but have fortunately got the goals when we needed them most. It's all about the consistency in this team now. We also agreed to sign young midfielder Borja Martinez from Jaen, he will join us in January. I view him as the long-term replacement for Hector Simon who is 32 in March and probably only has a few seasons left in him.

November Review

We continue our fine form with an excellent unbeaten month. I could not be happier to be top of the league. It's still early days and there are a lot of teams in contention but I'm hopeful that we can sustain this form. The only down point was the news of Victor Andres' injury. He's been outstanding this season and I'm hoping we can get him back playing as soon as possible.

December Review

A really poor month overall. We were always expected to lose against Espanyol and we didn't play as badly as the scoreline suggests. The two league defeats were appalling and we'll need to buck up our ideas to improve. We've shown just how we can play with the incredible win against Deportivo sandwiched in the middle of this bad patch.

Apologies for racing through this a little bit. A marathon session last night means I'm quite far behind!

You're doing great so far. Keep going straight into the top!

It normally takes me a little while to really get a 'feel' for other people's stories, but I feel like I've got a bug with this one, I love it.

Thanks guys. Good to know people are reading! Will probably post up another 3-4 months this evening. I've just finished December 2016 and don't like to be so far behind with the journal.

January Review

We're slowly working our way back into form. Two excellent victories at the end of the month has brought confidence back to the squad and we can hopefully put our slump behind us. New signing Borja Martinez has played every minute of every game due to various injury issues. Victor Andres is working his way back to fitness and Hector Simon missed a couple of games through illness. Martinez has impressed me greatly and is certainly the sort of player I hoped he'd be. Salva left us this month as is first team opportunities were severely limited.

February Review

Two wins and two defeats end an average month for us. We're still in a very good position in the league so I'm hoping we can put the particularly disappointing Murcia defeat behind us. We've still got plenty of games to go so it's still too early to set any targets. I'd hope we can at least remain in the play-offs.

March Review

Another distinctly average month and we will need to improve soon. Despite the incredible away victory at Zaragoza, our performances have been far below average. Thankfully, we retain our decent league position and we're still very much in the promotion fight. If we can up our game for the final ten games, I think we'll be okay.

April Review

Only time will tell the effect of the incredible capitulation at Deportivo. I am furious that we lost a game we were leading 3-0. After the win against Ponferradina we moved into 2nd place. The Deportivo match was a chance to extend that lead and we blew it in magnificent fashion. We were enjoying a fantastic month up until that point and must quickly put it behind us. We begin May with two home games and a chance to get back on track. It's getting very tense now.

May Review

I am pleased to have secured a play-off spot but only in a months time will we know just how much this poor month has cost us. We've had a great opportunity to win automatic promotion and I really hope we won't regret it. Zaragoza face Mallorca on the final day so it's mathematically impossible for us to reach second place. The injury to Hector Ladero has hit us hard defensively. It's clear his young replacement, Roger Riera, is going to need some time on loan next season. He really isn't coping well at the moment. We face the champions on the last day, hoping to build some momentum heading into the play-offs.

Your record against the teams at the top of the league seems pretty good, if you can avoid Almeria I see you as promotion favourites should you have to make do with just the play offs

End of Season Review

In the immediate aftermath of the season, the overriding feeling is of disappointment. We were very close to achieving promotion this season and it's quite gutting to miss out. Were it not for our poor form in the closing months, we would have finished second and avoided the play-offs altogether. I wasn't confident going up against Mallorca. They finished the season strongly and deserved to go up. I'm sure as the dust settles we'll look back with pride on a season in which we seriously over-achieved. We'll return hungrier than ever next year.

Player of the Season

Nestor Susaeta

One again, Nestor has had an incredible season. He's played in every single game and has given us a return of 22 goals and 17 assists. I've said all that needs to be said in previous years and I just hope that the 31-year-old can keep it up for a few more years yet.

Diego Cervero

Another player who keeps on giving. 30 goals and 5 assists this season for our captain. He leads the team superbly from the front and is always a danger to the opposition.

Victor Andres

As Hector Simon's abilities have declined, Victor has stepped up to be our key man in the midfield. He's remarkably consistent and we are a noticeably better team when he is playing. I will be looking to partner him with Borja Martinez next season.

Outgoing Transfers

Jon Erice was released on a free transfer. Sergio Garcia has joined Cadiz. Both found first team opportunities limited last year and that was unlikely to change. Juan Steven, Roger Riera, Julio Fernandez, Ivan Fernandez, David, Julio and Salvador Nunez will all spend the season away on loan.

Squad Overview

Goalkeepers

View attachment 378232

Biel Ribas will continue as our number one. Ayoze Gamiz has been promoted from the Under !9's and will provide cover.

Defence

View attachment 378231

I expect our defence to be much the same. Javi Soria was brought in for cover and I'm hoping he will push for a starting spot. Ivan Urunuela has been promoted from the Under 19's and I'm hoping to get his as much playing time as possible. He's a real prospect for the future and I'm hoping he will eventually take over from David Fernandez on the right.

Midfield

View attachment 378229

Borja Martinez and Victor Andres will be our main central midfielders. New signing Jon Toral and our vice-captain Hector Simon will provide cover. In front of them, my favoured three at the moment would be Nestor Susaeta, Youssef El Amrani and Cristian Ceballos. Eneko is on the decline and will likely play his last season for us. Josep Sene is unfortunate to have lost his place to El Amrani but will be an excellent player to have in reserve. Ruben Ramiro and the young Isreal Gonzalez will provide cover on the wings.

Attack

View attachment 378227

Much like last year. Diego Cervero will continue as our main man up front. Diego Suarez proved his quality with a series of excellent performances last season and will continue in a similar role. I'm hoping to get him even more playing time this season as I don't think it will be too long before he becomes our favoured option.

Season Preview

After going so close last year, I really hope we can take that final step and gain promotion. Espanyol, Tenerife and, our local rivals, Sporting Gijon were relegated last year and will be very tough additions to the league. We've shown that we have the quality to mount a challenge, now we need to show the consistency to make it happen. The squad hasn't really changed that much from last year. We've got a very good youth setup that I'm keen to utilise. I have opted to promote from within rather than buy elsewhere. These youngsters need a chance to fulfil their potential. We begin our season away to Recreativo.
