Quite simply the best striker i have ever watched.

It was a privilege to see him single handedly demolish Man Utd's defence at OT for Real Madrid, scoring a hattrick, and earning a standing ovation from the entire stadium when he was substituted in the final minutes. And not just a polite applause either, the sort of thing that only happens once in a generation, we knew we were witnessing something and someone very special.

I think he has left it to late, should have retired ages ago when he would have still been remembered as the star he was.

He will always be remembered as the best striker of the modern generation imo.

Plagued by knee injuries, weight issues and epilepsy for his whole career, but still able to return one of the most fearsome goalscoring records ever.

The numbers (particularly early in his career) speak for themselves:

Club --------------- Apps ----------- Goals
Cruzeiro ----------- 44 ----------------- 44
PSV ----------------- 57 ---------------- 54
Barcelona --------- 49 ---------------- 47
Inter Milan ------- 99 ---------------- 59
Real Madrid ----- 177 --------------- 104
AC Milan --------- 20 ----------------- 9
Corinthians ------ 69 ----------------- 35

Brazil -------------- 97 ------------------ 62

A shame he never got to hold the Champions League trophy, but i guess the 2 World Cups and 3 World Player of the Year awards make up for that.

Thank you for everything you have given to football Il Fenomeno, it was truly a pleasure to watch you play.

On top of his game only Ronaldinho was close to Ronaldo when it comes to entertainment. He was joy to watch. Those step overs, beating defenders with ease. Quality player. Shame about his injuries, otherwise we would have seen something very very special..

It's scary to think how good he could have been if he didn't have those injuries and wasn't fat for periods of his career.

Ah, Ronaldo. We coped with him in his prime, beating Brazil 2-1 in the World Cup. Probably the best striker of his generation.

but going by some of the people on this thread they would rather remember the Ronaldo that let himself go at the end of his career than the one that scored for fun. :S

burger king round the corners got a few vacencies, maybe he can go there next

I can't believe some people think he's not a legend. Very few players have his resume. In my lifetime I have seen 2 strikers that scared defenses in their prime to the point where they pretty much shat themselves whenever he was anywhere near the park (Henry is the other one). The moment he stepped on the park at senior level at the age of 17 to his final days in Europe he was world class. He's not like he developed at a later stage he was ready to go as soon as he got called up to the senior squad. Even Henry's 5-6 years were mediocre in comparison. That's 15 years of banging in goals left, right and centre not just for club but for country as well. Not just world class all galaxy IMO

Mainly i imagine because most of the people making those comments are too young to remember him in his prime.

You're right, forgot h never joined Real til after that season. He won a UEFA Cup with Inter though. :)

Ah, Ronaldo. We coped with him in his prime, beating Brazil 2-1 in the World Cup. Probably the best striker of his generation.

We played him at that WC as well, and were drawing 1-1 before Tommy Boyd scored an OG. :(

Nooooooooo !!!
The greatest striker ever. I give a lot of respect to Maradona, Pele, Zidane and to lot of other players. But there is only one ...RONALDO Luis Nazario de Lima !!!

Ronaldo > C Ronaldo for me. He can easily take out any keeper with his lethal finishing. Even the great Oliver Kahn.

With the other 'R's namely Roberto Carlos,Ronaldinho and Rivaldo make Brazil so fun to watch

My Favourite Ronaldo moment was the hattrick he scored at OT for madrid in 2002. That was simply the best hattrick ever, WE could of played 10 at the back and he would still of found space. Clearly the best striker and 2nd best player of this generation. Only Zidane is better.

My idol growing up. He was the man that made me want to be a Striker along with Batistuta.

If any striker in this era is even half as good as him they'd be successful. Arguably the best striker ever, considering the leagues and era he played in, but if he's not 1st he's definitely 2nd.

Amazing player, and the best striker of his generation bar none. Legend

Maradona & Pele > Ronaldo

I rememberhim showing the world he wasn't quite finished at Germany '06

Does everyone saying that he was the best striker ever think he was better than Pele, I take it?

Also, what do you guys think about his legacy vs. C. Ronaldo's? If C. Ronaldo keeps on playing as well as he has until his early 30's, will he be remembered to have been just as good? I missed Ronaldo's best years unfortunately since I got into the sport rather late in life. :(

One of the best strikers of this era if not the best. Sensational with both feet and with his head, a match winner at his best. Its a shame his knees are made of paper because who knows how much higher he could have gone. Obviously people remember him for the goals he scored in World Cups but im not even going to apologise to Utd fans for putting this on here because it is truely out of this world. The hat-rick at Old Trafford is what i will remember him for the man deserves the highest accolade possible, a modern day Pele if you will.
