BT Sport Journalist: Southampton's leading goalscorer, Raheem Sterling has been ruled out for between 2 to 3 months after suffering a broken ankle at home against Aston Villain the Capital One Cup Quarter Final. Sterling has been Southampton's key man this season, notching up 9 goals and 5 assists in 15 Premier League starts. With Ray Rodriguez back in training this week, it is likely Sterling's first XI place will be a 3 horse race between him, an out of form Adam Lallana, or a recall for Tom Ince from the Under 21's who has looked solid in his 8 Premier League appearances.

Southgate Wins Manager of the Month

Following the narrow defeat to Everton away, Southgate has been all smiles as pictured here at Selhurst Park​

Metro Journalist: Southampton manager Gareth Southgate is December's Manager of the Month Award recipient after leading his side to 5 consecutive Premier League wins, scoring 10 goals and conceding none. This month's form is in stark contrast to that of last month's, where his team lost 3 of their 4 matches, conceding 12 goals in the process, as fans and the media were beginning to question Southgate's time at St Mary's. Given the number of matches played over December (7 in total), the form also highlights the depth of Southampton's squad, which is a credit to both the board, and Southgate himself. Southampton fans also have a Capital One Cup Semi Final to look forward to against Manchester United, following their penalty shoot out win against Villa, who currently sit at the foot of the Premier League table.

Messi claims his 5th Ballon d'Or​

Goal Journalist: In what can only be described as the most controversial FIFA Ballon d’Or victory ever, Lionel Messi has reclaimed the crown. Amazing, the voting wasn’t even close, with a 56% slide in favour of Messi over his rival Cristiano Ronaldo. Bookies had Ronaldo as their massive favourite at 1/6, with Messinot even given a look in at 6/1. Surely there must be method to the madness? The international managers must have picked based on record breaking, rather than form of the 2014 calendar year. Ronaldo was in stellar form for club, finishing the 2013/14 season as the La Liga top goal scorer, and the Champions League top goal scorer, leading the way to Read Madrid’s La Décima. But couldn’t hold up an average Portugal team at the World Cup.

Like two rival sprinters, once one goes a nose in front, the other must follow suit​

On the other hand, Messi broke two of the most important records in European football, in the same week no less. Messi became both the highest scorer ever in La Liga, as well as in the Champions League at only 27 years of age. Before captaining Argentina to the World Cup final, only to lose by a goal in extra time. The first half of the 2014/15 season has seen them lock horses again and are currently neck and neck, with Ronaldo scoring 5 more goals in 4 more appearances, both with 5 assists. The for bookies it was a one horse race, for neutral fans, a tight race in which Ronaldo should prevail, for Messiand Ronaldo fans, anyone but their rival, and in hindsight, a question of form or records. But is it fair to award the most coveted individual award in football based on records broken?

The world brightest U21 talent?​

In other award news, Raheem Sterling has won the European Golden Boy Award for 2014 after his performances at Liverpool and Southampton. The young Englishman was the favourite for the award, having to beat out league rival Adnan Januzaj to claim victory.

The latest crop of local talents for the Saints'​

Guardian Journalist:Southampton F.C have announced three local schoolboys will have full scholarships at the clubs world renowned youth academy. The three include goalkeeper Jamie Dalton, right winger Anthony Searle, and gifted attacking midfielder Kevin Baxter, of which much is expected in the coming years. The three will hope their success in the academy will see them playing for the first team, following in the footsteps of Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and the worlds most expensive player, Gareth Bale.

Wenger Out

After 19 years at Arsenal, the end is nigh​

The Sun Journalist:Arsène Wenger is the longest serving manager in English professional football, with over one thousand games in charge of Arsenal. He has lead Arsenal to three Premier League titles, five FA Cup victories, and five Community Shield triumphs. He has turned cheap, unheard of teenagers into legends, making sizeable profits on player sales, a feat rarely seen in modern football. But loyalty and past glories mean little these days in football; Wenger's job is on the line. Arsenal find themselves in 8th position, 16 points behind their bitter rivals, Spurs in 4th place. This is not an uncommon sight. Arsenal have made a successful late push to reach the final Champions League place on several occasions in recent years, however, this year looks the most unlikely. Home defeats to Leicester, Southampton, Spurs, Newcastle, West Ham, Stoke, Chelsea, Q.P.R, and Everton in the Premiership have caused fans to voice their opinion in the stands (again), with numbers increasing after each loss.

More and more fans are becoming disenchanted by their long-serving manager​

The board have not made any comments on the situation thus far. When faced with a similar situation several seasons ago, the board stood by their leader, stating that Wenger would have the main job as long as he wished to stay. Though, if they were to retract that and part ways with him over Winter, it would not be the first time a chairman has lied. The only silver lining for Wenger is Arsenal's Champions League survival. Arsenal finished second in their group to Juventus, and caused a massive upset in the Round of 16 by defeating Bayern Munich over the two legs. If, and it is a big if, Arsenal were to defeat Barcelona in the Quarter Final, to eventually make it to the final, perhaps Wenger might have a foot to stand on. A foot to stand on that was not living on past glories.

Rodriguez Demands Out


A forgotten figure at the Saints'​

Metro Journalist: Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez has today publicly stated that he wants to leave the club this Summer. Rodriguez, who has failed to make an impression following his return from lengthy injury has now completely fallen out of favour at St Mary’s, finding himself not even included on the bench in recent weeks as Gareth Southgate continues to start the breakthrough star of the season, Wilfried Zaha. It is believed Southgate has given Rodriguez and his representatives the green light to speak with clubs to finalise a deal that benefits both the player and Southampton. The announcement comes just twelve months after Rodriguez was setting the Premier League alight with goals and assists, with strong rumours he would be on the plane to Brazil until injury cruelly ruined his dream. Now facing an impeding move, Rodriguez will hope to recapture last seasons form elsewhere.
