Yeah everything is in place for Villa to be a top half club. There is still a lot of quality at the club and it's been producing some good youngsters in recent seasons. Just as a neutral looking on it seems you need a positive, young manager to inject fresh energy into the club. Someone in the ilk of Martinez or Rodgers (not necessarily them, just someone like that), who will look to play attractive football and look to the bright future that the club has.

Not sure about Curbishley. I rate him as a manager (how could I not given who I support lol), but I think he might have been out of the game too long. I think he would be a mere continuation of the season-by-season, get-to-40-points-and-go-from-there kind of manager. I'm sure he would guide you to a comfortable finish, but the football might not be so exciting.

We have got a bright future if we get the major decisions this summer right, I agree with the cost cutting program, we have some players on ridiculous wages that do not deserve them. Martinez or Rodgers would be fantastic but it is going to take some serious investment to get them. It's a long shot but if we can afford him and he'd be interested I'd love Villas-Boas, I very very much doubt he'd drop down to Villa but it might be a nice way to prove himself in England and take a big club back towards the top. I don't think Curbishley would be the best appointment either but I think it'd be the most sensible based on the current cost cutting measures.

I know he doesn't have a great deal of experience, but would someone like Lee Clark be worth a punt? Or would he be another Paul Ince? Personally I really rate him, he's been working hard without a club to improve his knowledge, watching in on training at clubs around europe and quite a bit at Newcastle. He seems an intelligent guy, could be a worthwhile gamble...

Majority of fans aren't going to accept another gamble. Houllier was a gamble, McLeish was a gamble and both were failures, I know Houllier took 9th but we still had 2 England international wingers in that squad as well as Bent so should have done better. We are only going to accept a good manager with a strong record, and please God not Steve Bruce.

Villas Boas would be a huge gamble, yet you would happily take him?

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

Would he? He's got a far better record than McLeish, and he's up to date in football in a way Houllier wasn't.

Definitely, his record at Porto speaks for itself. He didn't do fantastically well with Chelsea but I don't think the players were suited to his style of play (as I know Villa's aren't either) but Chelsea's squad was ageing, I think if he was given time he'd have been successful.

Yeah but he's not proven himself aside from in his homeland. I think it's a mute point anyway, I can't see him taking such a backward step (apologies Villa fans)

I don't think he'd be another Ince. From what I've seen Clark is a lot more knowledgeable about the game than Ince ever was, and surrounds himself with experienced personnel who can guide him (like Terry Mcdermott). Even still I don't think he's proven enough for a premier league club. His main strengths were motivation and getting his players well drilled. It remains to be seen how adept he is at the tactical side of things.

I just literally went out and got drunk with a bunch of Villa fans to celebrate McLeish's sacking. I'm so happy, I read somewhere earlier that for the fans it feels like we've signed Messi and it's completely true! On cloud 9 today!

That's fair enough. I guess the reason why Villa fans are willing to accept a gamble on Villas-Boas and not McLeish is because of what they represent. Villas-Boas is young, European and ambitious, with a commitment to attacking and attractive football. McLeish is a dour Scot with a reputation for relegating clubs and awful football. Houllier, too, had faults in his image, being ageing.

I guess the bottom line is that we'd much rather lose in attractive fashion than to just grind out losses like under McLeish.

Steve Bruce will join. Call it now.

Leave. Now. If Bruce signs I will cry.

Mick McCarthy? Formerly of Wolves? Surely that wouldn't go down too well either?!

They clearly have a new policy where you ignore all other options and choose the one who recently got a midlands club relegated.

To be fair to Mick he never got Wolves relegated. I think he is a decent manager and can get the best out of average players. On Lambert surely Norwich is a more appealing job at the moment?

Got to wonder how much further he can go with Norwich. Villa have a lot more potential.

Oh I agree Villa are a much bigger club but it all depends on how much money Norwich let Lambert spend. If he if given over 10mill then he might as well stay and try and make this squad even better.

Better than McLeish. You're right though, I doubt it'd go down too well.

Average players? Rubbish.

These are not average players we're talking about. The core of this team was consistently finishing high in the Prem under O'Neill, or even if they weren't, the players who replaced them are not THAT bad. Yes, Chris Herd is no Gareth Barry, Wilfried Bouma had a defensive solidity to him that Stephen Warnock can only dream of, and Marc Albrighton has a long way to go before he can match Ashley Young's consistent threat, but across the board the squad is not ten places worse than it was before. In some place, in fact, we've improved: Darren Bent is our most potent and lethal striker since Dwight Yorke, Gabby Agbonlahor is no longer the one-dimensional speed merchant he was before, and Shay Given's lightning reflexes are amongst the best in the Prem.

These players are not average. What they are is badly managed. A team including the likes of Bent, Agbonlahor, Given and even Stephen Ireland is good enough to challenge almost any in the Prem. Bolster them with the a group of academy fledglings who seem to be amongst the most promising in recent years and this squad has rich veins of talent to tap into. The trick is to expose it and get these players playing in a way that maximises their strengths.

Norwich could be the more appealing job, but consider this: they're a club that is nowhere near the size of Villa, with low-grade facilities and a small fanbase. This is not taking anything away from them and what they have achieved, it's the mere truth. Villa, on the other hand, have ultra-modern facilities, a big and diverse fanbase, but most importantly of all a lot of money.
