Ended up using the 4-2-4 with Bayern and the 4-2-3-1 with PSG. Not particularly happy with either tactic, mind you.
Thaks for the feedback. When reading through your post, I spot a pattern and it has to do with the expectations perhaps not being realistic in relation to how one plays the game. I will answer the different aspects below and you will see that it all comes down to the things menioned above
At home attacks seem to bog down before the opposition's defence can be broken - almost all goals were scored on the counter. Away from home I found things were inconsistent (to be expected I suppose).
If speaking about the 424, most goals will be scored on the counter no matter what approach one uses. Its just down to the fact that the TC cant make the AMR and AML track back properly using the default settings, something that IS en engine flaw. This not only means that our fullbacks and MCs spot these good counter opportunities more often ( i.e lauch them more often) but they will also be more dangerous since we often come up 4 versus 4 or even 4 versus 3. I have scord plenty of goals form breakomng down their defence to though, using constant movement and overlaping fullbacks.
To be fair though, this isn't specifically a problem I've found with your high-rep team tactics, I've had trouble with others when messing about too, it seems tactics which try and mix in possession without going to voodoo lengths to retain the ball end up failing since they are both easy to sit behind and launch counterattacks against. Not that you can't win playing like that - it just requires individual brilliance. My style in the transfer market doesn't lend to that too well, I love unproven young players and I want to be able to throw them into the side and still win. With teams like Man U (judging by my brothers' save in particular) it seems like you can win so long as you throw enough individual talent at your opponents and play in a fairly cohesive manner.
Agree, but this is actually the core of a top notch team, the things that makes you one. You need players with individual brilliance AND brilliant team players with high work rate, determination and team work. If you dont have this in your side ( or rather on the pitch), then the team isnt really a top notch team.
If looking at the result in my Asenal - Swansea match you will see that we detroyed them WITH a extremly high possession rate and here, all goals came from a probing and patient buyild up. BUT, it required constant movement. Not only players with the ability to do it, but with the will to carry on doing so for 90 full minutes
Love the approach though! Being able to simply tick off or on a shout to alter how the tactic works was great in practice ... I'll give the 4-3-1-2 and maybe one or two underdog tactics a go next.
It is a great ay of playing. And remember, that the suggested shouts to implement pre-match start are in fact only suggestions. You could easily play in a different manner too if it suits the team better ( like perhaps a mixture between the 4231 middle team tactic and the 442 top team, i.e using the fact that uyou have pacey attackers etc)
With all this said, you need to perhaps alter the expectation or chnage the way you use the players etc.
Remember, if you want corn, plant corn
