BOLTON TACTIC
- An underdog tactic

Disclaimer: This is in no way emulation.

Bolton, an underdog ?. Well irl, they certainly are but as we all now, anything can be achieved with almost all teams in the EPL. But for now, let’s just say that Bolton is as **** as this year, that our main goal is to stay up and build on for next season and doing so without even being near getting involved in a relegation battle

Here, the key lies in using players capable of defending as that’s what we are doing most of the time, even when in possession.

Also suited for
Swansea, QPR, Doncaster, Crystal P. Obviously there are more teams but you getting the hang of it

The players

Left FC - Target man Support - Davies, N´Gog
Right FC – Defensive FC - Klasnic, N´Gog,

Left MC – DLP Defend – Reo, Holden
Right MC – CM Defend - Muamba

1st and only strategy: Slow and Cautious Possession Football

We keep a tight formation when attacking on the counter, holding on to the ball. Not only by playing in a slow tempo, but also by using many defensive roles. Defensive Wingers, a Cm on defend a playmaker on defend, a defensive Forward etc. To keep possession better we actually play down the flanks so that when we drop the ball, we still have many people behind it. In this rigid approach the defence comes first and we stick to our positions and as we don’t have the players for it ( generally speaking), we sit deeper and DON’T hassle.

The Approach uses a full Playmaker and a full target man, both players that are set to be cautious

Excellent stuff TheBetterHalf! I really must commend you on the effort put into these tactics. I personally prefer using a set of tactics rather than one plug and play tactic but have struggled to build a decent set. It really gives a sense of accomplishment when you make tactical changes and win a match because of it (even if it just changing to a saved tactic with a different mentality). I am currently using the Man Utd set with United in my first season and hope to sell some of my strikers and use one of your lone striker sets in the next season :D

Really cannot convey how much I appreciate this! :D

Thanks .

As for full sets. you can use more than 2 different approaches but it will need much more analyzing, watching more games in full mode etc.

Example:

You are playing with Aston Villa. Then you could use the manin counter version as your standard version, using the underdog/bolton versions in away matches, tough hiome matches or when wanting tio see out results and use the main top team/ man u when you play lesser teams at home

Example

I like having just the two tactic set because it keeps things simple. At any time in any match, you'd either want to attack or defend :D

Agree. Some teams though, like FCK, Celtic etc needs more than 2 as they will be huge favourites in the league and more more a heavy underdog the faarer they get in the CL.

True, never really thought about that.

About the Wide 4231 for top teams, ( using Arsenal och Real Madrid, in two different tactics), I am almost there. It will probably be ready late sunday :D

The Middleteam 4231 is also alsmot ready and the underdog is ready. Will post them at the same time though

Looking forward to it :D

Me to. Have not had this much fun with FM in a long time. For me 12.1.1 is the best edition/patch by far. If one just keep things simple and play to the strength of the team, its a joy to manage.

your tactics look very interesting to me. I feel like i understand football irl but i can never transfer it to creating tactics for fm. is there any basic/key points you use to create working effective tactic sets?

I wil actually make a small guide. For now, just keep the suggestions coming about what ( and why) team shall mak a tactic for

Happy new Year

Ps: I am top of the table with Bolton ( 13 matches played, using the 442 bolton), some examples

- H- chelsea 1-0
- A Arsenal0-0
-A . Spurs 7-0 !!!!
- H- WBA 2-0
- H - Fulham 2-0

Happy New Year to you as well TheBetterHalf and to everyone else on FM-Base! :D

QPR TACTIC

An underdog tactic

Disclaimer: This is in no way emulation.

QPR, an underdog? Yes indeed they are but as always in FM if having more than a £5 m transfer found, you can turn a team into a top 5-10 team. Here though, QPR will be representing the underdog

Here, the key lies in using players capable of defending as that’s what we are doing most of the time, even when in possession. The main approach is to play cautious and keep the ball. We use one CM on support and one on defend, just like we use one (holding) defensive winger and one (going at goal)Winger on support. When playing with the more defensive approach, we use the more cautious roles in all 4 players.

Also suited for

The players

Flank 1.Defensive Winger (holds the ball) + CM on support
Flank 2; Winger on support + CM on defend (holds the ball)

1st strategy: Slow and Cautious Possession Football

We keep a tight formation when attacking on the counter, holding on to the ball. Not only by playing in a slow tempo, but also by using many defensive roles. Defensive Wingers, a Cm on defend, a defensive Forward etc. To keep possession better we play out of defence, pass to feet and retain possession. In this rigid approach the defence comes first and we stick to our positions

The Approach uses NO playmaker or Target man. Notice that there is one tweak to the tactic and that is that the wingers have the wide play set to “move into channels”

2nd Even more cautious roles

Here, both CM is on defend and both wingers are defensive wingers. We also use a FC that is on support and we drop deeper with the team. This approach is mainly used when you don’t feel you stand a single chance wining but instead looks for a 0-0 draw or trying to keep the score line down

3rd strategy playing much weaker teams

Here, I would just change the Strategy to Control, let the team exploit the flanks and use overlaps, allowing some roaming

I am planing to make a few more of these Team tactics. Does anyone have a suggestion of a team ?. ( not tottenham or any other good team that likes to play a 442 though)

Another brilliant thread

Bayern, or any team capable of playing a 4-2-3-1 deep. Playing in the PL I dont see it too often in game except when i come up against Bayern, and its a nightmare formation to play against.

Also looking, at your Manchester United formation, we play quite similar setups (though I prefer more CF and shorter passing, combined with more flamboyant roles in the centre mids and forwards - slightly modified DLP - support, AP support, slightly modified CF support, slightly modified CF attack), but i noticed you have the deepest mid behind the most advanced forward, is there any tactical reason there or a particular preference?

Using your training in my new save, since it fits in with the type of players and football i want to use, will look to give some feed back as the seasons progress,

It has its pros and cons. Its does leave à bigger gap but on the other side the deepcoming FC links up better with the more advanced MC. The main reason though is that I want ONE holding player on each side and not both playing " together".

As for the deep 4231,I Will get back to you.

Does Into Oblivion work on patch 11.1.1? Was thinking of trying it out.

Your into oblivion Tactic has done wonders for my Story Save since i've start using it , i'll edit this post later when i get some screenshots the fixtures. I've run into a bad patch now but i'm sure i'll come out of it. It's got me scoring alot of goals an conceding maybe one every game. We make most of the possession and challenge the keeper alot , even though we don't have the most % of percentage in the fixture.

Keep up the good work!
