Liverpool's squad 'only needs tinkering', says Kenny Dalglish | Football | guardian.co.uk

Kenny Dalglish has outlined his plans to sign players only of the highest calibre for Liverpool this summer and confirmed his expensive strategy has the full support of the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group.

The Liverpool manager believes his squad do not require an overhaul, having shown their quality during a strong second half to the season, but an injection of proven quality to enhance prospects of a return to the Champions League. Ashley Young of Aston Villa and Blackpool's Charlie Adam are among the targets and Dalglish admits FSG will make substantial funds available.

"The squad only needs tinkering," said Dalglish. "If people want to see the best players and assets of the football club wearing a red shirt, that's what we want to try and provide. We want to get the highest quality of player in that we can. That's what position we have been put into, and that's what we will try to do.

"The owners just want the same as the football club. Everything they can afford to put into transfers they will put in. There's no figure on it, and even if there was we wouldn't publicise it. But the desire is there and the intention is there. A good way to judge it is that the owners were disappointed we didn't bring more players in in January.

"People might be cynical and say we got Ryan Babel and Fernando Torres out and almost balanced the books with bringing in Luis [Suárez] and Andy [Carroll], but Luis was coming in anyway before Fernando went, so the owners' intention was there. Damien [Comolli, director of football] has done a fantastic job identifying players and whittling it down to a small number to make it more manageable for us to look at what we want. It's all in place ready to go. We just need to get somebody to say yes."

Defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday could cost Liverpool a place in the Europa League next season but Dalglish is confident a lack of European competition would not deter his targets from coming to Anfield. He added: "Whether it affects people positively or negatively, you'll need to ask the individuals. But our football club is much bigger than just one season not being in Europe."

'An injection of proven quality' and 'Charlie Adam' shouldn't be in the same sentence surely? Adam might be good, but he's hardly 'proven'. One good season in the Prem does not a 'proven' player make.

Alex Ferguson confirms Owen Hargreaves to be released by #MUFC "in the hope he can resurrect his career elsewhere"

SNAP HIM UP KENNY, pay as you play!

Pass on Hargreeves.

Will just take time from our medical staff and Aurelio bonding.

Daniel Levy - Tottenham Chairmen:

"Having quality players means they automatically attract attention from other clubs - but I can assure you that we have no reason to sell, and every intention of retaining, our key players. We shall simply not entertain any approaches for these players."

Pretty sure we still have to sell everyone because we're not in the CL?

Pretty sure we have to sell Cesc Fabregas because-he-wants-to-go back-to Barca-without-actually-ever-saying-that?

What a chairman, and manager says is often different to what actually happens. I'm sure Tottenham had every intention of keeping Berbatov, but he wanted to leave and did. There's not a huge amount you can do about Man Utd coming in and making big offers for Modric and/or Bale. Less than we can do since Utd actually have the money, Barca don't.

This. If the right offer comes in Levy will sell. Thats his policy always has been.

I think the only player they could lose to a big club is Modric, and he's probably the only one who would hit them hard.

It was very different with Berbatov though, he had 2 years left on his contract and was running it down so Levy was put in a position where he had to sell him. Whereas with Modric and Bale, they both have 5 and 4 years contracts meaning that we do not have to sell.

It seems like Liverpool have officially become the first team to make a formal approach for Belgian prodigy, Eden Hazard. The Lille forward, who has won over every Ligue 1 fan due to his brilliant performances, had been linked with a move out of the French club for quite some time and as it stands, it seems like the time for him to make that move is now or never.

The twenty year old has gone on to catch the eyes of the likes of Arsenal, Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester United and Inter Milan. However, Liverpool seem to have finally taken the lead in the race to land the player.

At the moment Liverpool have not really made any real offers for the player, but have informed Lille to keep them posted on any developments that develop regarding the possibility of the player leaving the team in the near future.

Hazard, who has gone on to make an impressive hundred and forty one appearances for Lille despite being only twenty, has scored twenty eight goals in his career with the club and has picked up twenty one assists along the way. At the same time, he has also managed to make nineteen appearances for the Belgian national side, while picking up seven assists.

Kenny Dalglish had previously hinted that one his priorities would be to bring in a winger or two in the summers. It just so happens that Hazard is one of the most traditional wingers out there today. The player has blistering pace, good footwork and the ability to bend in some brilliant crosses.

Hazard is currently being valued in at around twenty million pounds and that happens to be a fee that is rather easily payable by Liverpool – once Dalglish gets handed over a transfer kitty for the summers.

Nonetheless, despite Liverpool instigating all these transfer rumours regarding Hazard, the player himself had recently gone on to state that he would much rather prefer a move to Arsenal. Now, should Liverpool manage to fork out a decent amount of cash for the player, should he opt to move to the Gunners instead, their efforts would be deemed pointless.

According to most experts, Liverpool should not beat around the bush and wait for the possibility of a move to develop. Considering the fact that the team really likes the looks of Hazard, they should move in and make the kill while they have the opportunity, or it won’t be long before they are left clutching their heads dreading their wasted opportunity.

Its not about having to sell, its about the right price. Modric cost 16.5million. if someone comes in round 45 million and modric is willing to listen, Levy will likely say yes. same with bale.

liverpool will struggle to sign him, Lille finished as champions are playing CL footy next season

newcastle have apparently offered Charles N'Zogbia 60k per week to re-sign for them this summer. Also Mike Ashley is prepared to break his stringent wage control if the player is right.

A few more rumors from BBC Sport mainly about Arsenal and Man City:

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is lining up a double swoop for Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas and Tottenham's Luka Modric.

Arsenal are prepared to sell captain Cesc Fabregas back to his former club Barcelona for £50m.

Arsene Wenger has vowed to splash out to bring the best players to the Emirates next season, with Samba, Bolton defender Gary Cahill and West ham midfielder Scott Parker all on his radar.

Roberto Mancini will begin Manchester City's summer spending this week by confirming the signing of Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen.

Chelsea are ready to fight Manchester United to sign Spurs playmaker Luka Modric.

Tottenham will attempt to lure former striker Dimitar Berbatov back to White Hart Lane from Manchester United.

Newcastle have agreed a fee with a relegation-threatened club for an International midfielder. Most likely to be Birmingham's Seb Larsson.
Also, the club are expected to have a second player signed within the next two weeks, which will probably be Charles N'Zogbia :D
