Arsenal picked up all three points in the Gunners' second grandslam clash of the season, recording a 3-2 win, in a game, that will go down as one of the greatest in Premiership history. New signing Maxi Rodriguez opened the scoring for Liverpool, after following up the rebound from a Fernando Torres shot. Centre Back William Gallas then popped up with a superb header. Then just before the break, the spanish talisman Torres added a goal, with a peach around Almunia from 20 yards. Arsenal showed great character to come out all guns blazing looking for an equalizer. They got it through no other than William Gallas, again from a corner, Eduardo struck the post from the 6 yard area, the ball was then bundled in by Gallas, completing an unlikely double. Gallas then completed the most remarkable of hat-ricks, by knocking in a header from a Fabregas free kick. Arsenal held on to complete a remarkable victory.
Arsenal qualified for the 4th round of the Carling Cup, with a solid performance, despite resting key players. Former manager Arsene Wenger was often criticised for fielding a weaker team in this competition, but Frankie didn't exactly use youth players, it was made up from fringe players, and Walcott made a claim for a start in the league, after slotting one past Schwarzer. Johnson equalized for the whites, but Eduardo showed great composure, to come off the bench, and grab the winner.
In a game which could have gone either way, Arsenal left it oh so late to beat Sunderland. The game was very scrappy and could have gone either way. Few chances in the game, but these mainly fell to Sunderland, Bent and Jones couldn't comply. Super-Sub Nicklas Bendtner then headed in a winner in the 84th minute. The sign of champions...?
nice update Frankie. Banging in the goals it seems. Were you tempted to improve your defence pre-season? Cardozo should be a good signing though and you seem to be outscoring your opponents at the minute even when you concede anyway
After much optimism, Arsenal were sent back to earth by a rampant Fiorentina side. Florence has always been a tough place to go, and this was proved, when in the 3rd minute, Riccardo Montolivo went on a mazey run, before slotting past Almunia, to create a memorable moment. Arsenal seemed shocked, and the Purple Boys capitalized, through Bollati. Van Persie pulled one back, before Gilardino seemed to have put the game to bed. Bendtner's goal could have sparked a comeback, but Fiorentina caught Arsenal chasing, and slotted one in through controversial character Mutu.
Coming from the back of the defeat in Florence, Arsenal had to travel up to Manchester, to play United, which is always a spicy one. This was no different. Robin Van Persie opened the scoring, and Arsenal seemed in control, before a fluke lob/cross from lethargic Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov drew United level, they grew strength from this, and pressed for a winner, which they got through Berbatov again, for once he scored in a big game. Arsenal could do nothing, as United made the game safe.
After he was pulled off just after scoring against United, many thought it was a precautionary measure, but it is so much worse than that. A scan has today revealed the Arsenal Vice-Captain will be out for 4 weeks with fractured ribs. This is a big blow to Arsenal, who have already had to deal without there main hitman for some of the season with injury.
After it was revealed team-mate Robin Van Persie would be sidelined for at least 4 weeks with fractured ribs, there were questions raised as to who would take the baton as the main striker for the gunners. Danish superstar Nicklas Bendtner has come out all guns blazing saying he is the saviour, and he is the man to take Arsenal to the title, and with him at the fore, anything is possible. You have to take anything this man says with a pinch of salt, but, if he does carry on his early season form, we won't be laughing for long.
Arsenal quickly recovered from their dissapointing trip to Manchester, with a strong 2-0 win over Bolton at the Emirates, both goals were penaltys but this dosen't tell the entire story. Arsenal dug deep and overcame the physical prowess of Bolton, as Bolton looked to make it difficult. Andrei Arshavin was getting so frustrated at constantly being held back, chopped from behind, he two footed Gretar Steinsonn, earning a red card. This put a tinge of sadness in an otherwise good day for Arsenal.
Then came the big game against Madrid, in which Arsenal started very shaky, as if they were overawed with the occasion, and Cristiano Ronaldo took advantage, with a low strike past Almunia. Arsenal couldn't get going until the second half, but when they did, they really took the game to the spanish side, and were very unlucky to leave the game with nothing.
Arsenal then picked up another win in the league, and it was very, very comfortable. Oscar Cardozo was a threat throughout and knocked in a header in the 15th minute before powering in a free-kick in the 74th minute. Fulham looked very laclusture, and it seemed as if their maiden Europa League campaign could have had a slight affect on the cottagers league form.
Arsenal were then left stunned by a rampant Hull side. Fielding a slightly weaker team, but with players like Cardozo and Clichy leading it, Arsenal raced to a 1-0 lead through the towering Paraguayan. Hull then shocked the reds by equalizing in the 60th minute. Arsenal couldn't take the lead, and Hull parked the bus to take it to penalties. Just before the shootout, Cesc Fabregas was bought on as a penalty taker, but he missed the crucial penalty to knock out the gunners.
Arsenal once again relied on the towering Cardozo to pull them through a tough away game at West Ham, he powered in one of the goals of the season, picking the ball up, 30 yards from goal, then doing a trademark piledriver, in of the underside of the bar. The rest of the game was nothing special, but Arsenal will be happy they left Upton Park with 3 points.
