Pre Match Analysis

The Romans find themselves top of the league by a point after 20 games but can’t afford any slip-ups as they will surely be punished by the chasing Pennasrossa.

Cos Nostra are sitting 5th in the league, 15 points behind their opponents. A win may move them to 4th.

Higuain went close twice and Tevez one for Romans in the opening 10 minutes as The Romans came flying out of the box. On an extremely rare attack, Gotze forced a good save from Akinfeev for Cosa Nostra but it was in truth all they could muster as The Romans continued to have attack after attack and could count themselves very unlucky to go in at halftime at 0-0. The Romans began the second half as they had left the first, dominating the game and limiting Cosa Nostra to a couple long ranger Sweinsteiger efforts that didn’t trouble Akinfeev. But then, totally against the run of play, Sakho turned home from close range after a scramble in The Romans’ 6 yard box to put Cosa Nostra 1-0 up on the hour mark! But The Romans weren’t to be denied their goal as a lovely Tevez pass round Higuian to blast home. The game moved into the last 10 minutes and it was becoming very stretched with both teams looking for the win. Higuian for The Romans and Kagawa for Cosa Nostra had the best chances but it finished 1-1. Harsh on The Romans but well played to Cosa Nostra.

well done A.S. La Cosa Nostra, they did very well to get a point there and i'm sure taht will be more crucial for me, the pennarossa chaiman, then for them. Looking at teh teams I expected The Romans to get a comfortable 2-3 goal win so i'm extremely pleased with the result.

Harriers are you planning on showing cup finals like this and any crucial last few games that decide titles or europe?

Cup Finals will definatly be shown yes. And probably crucial end of season games too.

the league tables aren't showing up for me :S and it's good to knwo that we can draw with inter, beat the romans, juventus an palermo and avoid defeat against all the otehr top teams but then go and lose to calgiari. i mean i didn't even realise they were a serie a team, at least it was away and not at home, but still our first loss of the season comes to them.

6th placed Liverpool could move back to 5th with a win today and are currently second top scorers in the league.

Newcastle are lying in 9th but victory will see them move 7th, and the match odds say they are favourites to do just that.

45 seconds into the match and there was already action as Newcastle’s Robben produced a world class save from Pepe Reina. Newcastle continued to push and push, so it came as quite a surprise when Liverpool took the lead through Villa on 22 minutes. Nd that would prove to be Liverpool’s only attempt of the first half as Reina pulled off some heroic saves to make sure they went in at half time with a slender 1-0 advantage. The second half continued in much the same fashion, Reina denying Neymar and Robben for Newcastle with world class saves until the unthinkable happened. On a rare raid forward Liverpool scored. Modric with the strike on 62 minutes. That goal killed Newcastle hope and they mounted little resistance to the inevitable Liverpool victory. 2-0 the final score despite Scott being sent off for Liverpool with 2 minutes to go.

QPR boast the tournament’s top scorer in DJ Campbell and Newcastle will be glad he is injured and out of the game.

Newcastle’s top scorer in the League Cup is Leandro Damiao with 3, but they will also have to do without him through injury as Newcastle look to be the first BTC team to pick up some silverware.

The first half was one of the dullest displays of football this reporter has ever had the misfortune to witness. Neither team could form a notable attack with just one shot on goal each, QPR maybe edging it as their shot was on target. A very disappointing 0-0 at half time. An hour gone and each team had managed another shot apiece in what was turning into one of the least entertaining finals in the League Cups history.Acouple more half chances each but the score remained 0-0 till full time with the crowd desperately hoping for some notable action in extra time. It took 100 minutes of football for the first decent attempt on goal, and it came for Newcastle’s Baines as he thumped a 25 yard free kick against the bar. Newcastle looked like they were playing for penalties, just knocking the ball round at the back. But that lead to a mistake and QPR’s Petter Vaagan Moen took full advantage to give his side a 1-0 lead with only 2 minutes to go. There was no time left for Newcastle to respond and QPR win the League Cup.
