Newcastle 3-3 Charlton (Newcastle win on pens)
The Toon finally enjoy some success!
Barton and Nolan celebrate the opener
Heading into the game Newcastle had been on a terrible run of form. 2 defeats in 2 games had left confidence a bit shaken under new manager Jim Jefferies. Newly promoted under Hughton, many wrote them off along with Blackpool and WBA. Today they had the chance to laugh off the doubters.
Things again though didn't start well as Charlton took off from the blocks quicker with a convincing 3-0 lead before HT. It was courtasy of a wonderful hat-trick from new boy Bradley Wright-Phillips, the younger brother of Shaun and son of Ian Wright former Arsenal forward.
His first came after 12 minutes when an excellent passing move from the Londoners led Christian Daily to feed a pass to WP who then beat Williamson and scored by passing the ball across the keeper and into the bottom corner. Boo's were then heard all around St. James Park as Jim Jefferies side continued to heavily underperform.
WP took his second very well. After cutting in from the left he took on Ryan Taylor. He left the RB in his wake as he progessed onto beating Williamson again before playing a one-two with Semedo on the edge of the box. With Tim Krul in his way, he easily chipped the ball over the top of the Dutchman. Although only 27 minutes had been played, many fans were already spotted heading for the exit. Jim Jefferies was simply caught with his head in his hands.
His 3rd was a scrappy, scrappy goal. AFter a corner had been drifted in a failed clearnace from Phil Airey led WP to toe poke his 3rd home and celebrate by sticking 3 fingers over his mouth and taunting the Geordie faithful. Jefferies needed to get some sort of response from his side at HT because for him, and the club, this was becoming embarresing.
The second half produced a new Newcastle. Led out by Barton and Nolan, the CM pairing were fired up and came out and hit Charlton hard. The League 1 outfit find it difficult to cope with the Premier League sides class and eventually caved under pressure. Newcastle's first came from Joey Barton, a 30 yard monster which flew past Rob Elliot. Barton(seen above and below) celebrated with Nolan and tried to motivate the rest of the team.

Things got even better when Spainish LB Jose Enrique netted a simple tap-in from 3 yards out. After Nolan had played through Maikon Leite, the Brazilian had his shot saved before the attacking LB capatilized and netted for Newcastle. With 30 minutes left the remaining fans in the ground could no doubt smell the comeback. Jefferies was on the touchline screaming instructions.
And it finally paid off. The makeshift CB pairing of Williamson and Kadar came up trumps when the young Hungarian scored a header from a Steven Ireland corner. The Newcastle fans were in raptures as there side had pulled off a stunning achievement with this comeback. Could they now win this?
They did so by taking it to penalties. It was then Steven Ireland who was the hero by scoring the 5th penalty which set up and away tie at Portsmouth for Newcastle. Jefferies admitted after the came despite the revival his side produced they should have been dead and burried and must improve for the away trip to fierce rivals Sunderland.
