***THE BETTER HALFS TACTIC UPLOAD & DISCUSSION

Now that I've built a squad to suit the Gyro, the results, style of play etc have been great. Fortunately my 1st choice M R/L are also wing backs. However with the amount of injuries / players out on int. duty it would be good to have another approach. Will give the Hook a try in my upcoming US Cup Match.

Sounds great. I am going to try tweaking "The Gyro/The Hook" into a Deep 4231 and a 4411

Very impressive on first glance, considering its far from fluid. I had trouble fielding a team as in the US Cup you can only field 5 foreigners and my best 4 Americans were on US Duty! But a 5-0 win, 62% possession against a reasonable Columbus Crew side in the Semi-Final showed how solid it is. A hat-trick from Nekounam, playing in the AP position, a goal from my DM Alonso after a great run from deep and a typical finish from Obafemi Martins playing in the DLF role.

Impressive start !

I am also making a more defenisve formation called " TheTorpedos", basically just using 2 players attacking an the rest of the team, playing really compact and linking up with play.

Record so far in this season using Gyro/Hook:

41 games played, 31 wins, 7 draws, 3 losses, only 16 goals conceded!

I've built a very good squad for the league, so I expect to be doing well, but that is impressive. Will be interesting how we get on in the Club World Championship.

Hi TBH, I've always been a fan of your tactics, most of all because I love playing with smaller teams and on the counter. Currently I'm managing Leeds, and using your Underdog Direct Counter - Wide 451, and I have some questions and comments, so please I would appreciate your opinion:

1. Why long shots on sometimes instead on rarely for CMs, long shots tend to be wasteful in FM
2. I think it would be efficient to make DMC to more direct passing and through balls often, and train PPM like come deep to get ball, try killer balls, dictate tempo and long range passes, making him a DLP, would that work?
3. right central midfielder is more hardworking and left more creative as you stated, so why have the right midfielder passing set to direct, if he is the one with less creativity and worse passing?
4. in high press version, the roaming is ticked off for right midfielder, why?
5. would the tactic be efficient also if I put the tempo a bit up?
6. if i have a winger in my team (classic winger with good crossing) would it be smart to put him on hug touchline and not move into chanells, and in that case should I change focus play in low press from middle to mixed?
7. would training PPM plays one-twos disrupt the flow?

Thank you so much if you would be so kind to comment :)

]1. Why long shots on sometimes instead on rarely for CMs, long shots tend to be wasteful in FM

Long shots are not wasteful as such but approaches that make players not having any options but to take a longshot are often wasteful.
Personally, I would say that in my saves, about 1/3 of my goals are from what is considered as longshots. 1/3 from set pieces and 1/3 from inside the area after crosses/t-balls/individual mistakes/performances
My point here is that by restricting the players NOT taking longshots might actually force him into taking them too late in the attacks and from a too poor angel

3. right central midfielder is more hardworking and left more creative as you stated, so why have the right midfielder passing set to direct, if he is the one with less creativity and worse passing?

That’s not how the roles are described or how passing works. As we are the underdog and the lesser team, we will mostly face teams pushing up and NOT sitting deep and defend. Here, it’s better to have the creative player further up in the field. So, this is why your most creative player with the best Decision etc. should be the MCL and your 2nd best MC should be in the MCRight spot.

The hardest passing game to play is “Mixed” as he would have to know when and why to use short or a more direct approach and this is why the player with the best decision should use this, i.e. the Mcleft. Playing a more direct approach is not that hard and I have never written that the MCR is a poor passer.

2. I think it would be efficient to make DMC to more direct passing and through balls often, and train PPM like come deep to get ball, try killer balls, dictate tempo and long range passes, making him a DLP, would that work?

If facing teams sitting deep, then having creative players in deep positions is crucial, both in FM and in real life so if being a huge favorite, then you need a DPL here, otherwise not. The PPM come deep to get the ball is not called for as he is set to” run from deep = rarely “ anyway

4. In high press version, the roaming is ticked off for right midfielder, why?
Because when playing a higher pressing game, I want to keep the shape better when pressing and too much roaming might make us loose that shape when losing the ball.

5. Would the tactic be efficient also if I put the tempo a bit up?
You can try and it will probably work. Just remember that this is not a highly direct counter approach but a counter approach with some players suing a more direct passing game and here, the tempo is not that high when a counter attack is not on.

6. if I have a winger in my team (classic winger with good crossing) would it be smart to put him on hug touchline and not move into channels, and in that case should I change focus play in low press from middle to mixed?

The focus play is not where on the pitch the ball is played, but through what midfielders that play is channeled through. Here, we want to play more compact and use the middle more, using the area we are flooding. The fullbacks, DCs and DMC are most of all look for the DMC/MC/MC in the buildup but when the winger gets the ball, he will still use his flank

7. Would training PPM plays one-twos disrupt the flow?

I think for the FC, its a great idea but not as a rule for all new players. After all, this is not a tiki-taka approach, its one for lesser teams

Wonderful insight, thank you!!

I'm currently on the verge of promotion to the premiership and I'm really looking forward to seeing how this tactic will work in the premiership where I will be fighting against relegation and hopefully for stable middle position. I was thinking of playing the low press most of the time, with switching to high press version at home against similar relegation threatened sides and when trailing behind in game and wanting to try to draw at least. Hopefully this tactic will work.

I've never been much of tactician, I've always liked having fixed tactics and building a squad (a lot of youngsters) to suit that tactic, scouting and building suitable players, not the other way around.

So just one more question: regarding individual training, what would be the best role to train players i want to develop?

I was thinking for DMC training DLP attributes, for CMs training box to box attributes and for wingers inside forward attributes (or perhaps defensive winger attributes for better defensive attributes)?

I would start off by setting up a 5 year plan and what you want to achieve on the 5th season. The next step would be to see what it takes for you to get there. Lets say that achieving a certain thing in year 3 is crucial for the materplan. Then, you make up a plan as how to do that. How do you need to play the 2nd season and the first ( being the 1st in the EPL).

My point is that if you need to be playing a more probing football within 3 years, needing to abandon this approach, then you need to build for the future. If the players at hand are not good enough to be a part of that future setup, then don try to re-rtain them into - something whilst obviously better for the future - (but) a role they wont be able to get good enough in anyway. Better then to focus on their strengths and get the best out of them and then sell them and replace them with better players as the journey goes on

Agreed, but the thing is - even in a couple of years time, when the team gets a lot better and respected, I don't intend to change the playing philosophy drastically, I know that when I will be favorite to win and the opponent will defend, it would be better to play probing and controled, but I simply HATE slow possesion based football with a lot of short-ish passing. Are you saying that this counter approach (tactic) will not work at all in situations when my team is favorite to win? I think (and hope) it will, of course the high press version, the thing is - I enjoy aggresive direct play, so I would be happy to sacrifice "beauty" and "style" which would perhaps come with playing more patient and possesion when I'm favorite.

I know that for FM12 yo've made a third version of this tactic, the "patient strech" one, do you think it would be wise to implement that approach when the time comes for my team to be considered favorite?

I think it will still work. I have actually made a Top Team version that I can send to you. The flow is still more direct and the football is not exactlty free flowing ( ;D ) but it will produce results.

Wonderful if you could send me the file. I'll give you the e-mail adress in private message. How is that top team version different from the high press version?

Its just more agressive and pushed up with higher mentality. I will upload it into the thread for you tonight.

Hey TBH. Liking the effort in your tactics.

What would be your best classic tactic for Fulham?

My team consists of: Stekelenburg, Hangeland, Shawcross, Juan Sanchez Mino, Zabaleta, Matuidi, Miguel Veloso, Jordy Clasie, Rasmus Elm, Bressan, Moussa Sow, Borriello, Facundo Ferreyra, Maupay, Fierro (to name a few)

Does it have to be in the Classic Tactic mode ?( the ones made with the Tactic Creator are the same, its the settings that counts)

It doesn't have to be. I always refrained from the new style of tactics as I wasn't sure how to do the shouts properly and I've always found classic easier :P

Which non classic tactic would you suggest? Any tips for a first timer going on to the newer style of tactics?

Thanks!

Sure, I will post up some recommendations when the kids are in their bed :)
