***THE BETTER HALFS TACTIC UPLOAD & DISCUSSION

This is my starting 11;

GK: Reina
RWB: Johnson
RCB: Skrtel
LCB: Agger
LWB: Enrique
DM: Allen (with Lucas injured.)
RCM: Gerrard
LCM: Sahin
AMR: Sterling
AML: Suarez
STC: Borini (with Demba Ba injured.)

Use Gerrard as LCM. The main playmaker position in this tactic is LCM. Sahin may have higher passing, but Gerrard has higher mental traits. When Lucas Leiva is back, put him as DM and Joe Allen as RCM. Nuri Sahin should be the sub for Gerrard and Jonjo Shelvey should be the sub for Joe Allen.

That is about it. I play without the starting transfer funds to keep the game more realistic (it is harder for Liverpool this way).

Abstract

Here you will 2 versions that is to be used as plug & play tactics. These are mainly suitable for Middle Teamas and Underdogs since the approach is rather defensive and on the counter. This style is mainly for the casual games or for those that likes to focus on squad building and/or dont have the knowledge as how to make a good tactic. The tactics can be used both in the Prem aswell as in the BSS

The Tactics are made with the Classic Mode, hence shouts and roles cant be implemented. This also means that it does not work in the FMC

The
Versions

This small set consist of 2 versions that are to be used as plug & play tactics. The first version is called "High Press", the 2nd "Lower press" If you feel that you have the ability to disturb the opponent by putting a **** of a lot more pressure on them, then use the high press and if you are more scared that you might be dragged out of position then use the lower press version.

Then why are there a third version called " Heavy favourite, when in need of a goal" ?. Well, having had succes and teams sits really deep or when playing against a lesser team in the cup, then this version is good, just like when needing to push forward during the last 15 minutes to grab a goal
This also means that you an use this version when playing with a Top Team

In short, the HIGH PRESS is when "feeling" like the favourite and the LOWER PRESS when feeling like you are the underdog. Not only in terms of status and quality, but also regarding form and by looking at the flow of the game

The flow
using Underdogs

As soon as a counter attack is launched, we keep a direct
game and channel t-balls from the middle onto the flanks for our 3 attacking
players to tun onto. Our single MC keeps a restricted game but he is supported
by 2 more attacking minded DMCs that always seeks free space. When our fullbacks
get into possession deep down field, they hold on to the ball to drag the
opposition onto them. This means that if we face a tea sitting deep and defend,
our attacking players are likely to make a run forward in vain and the FBs hold
onto the ball, making these attacking players easy to mark as the opposition
simply denies us space to play these direct t-balls into. This is why this
approach is for underdogs and perhaps middle teams.

The flow using better
teams/ top teams

It does work for top teams to, don't get me wrong. You
would easily win the league with Man U, Man C but the flow wont look as good as
playing a different approach and you will see more 1-0, 2-1 wins instead of 3-0.
5-1 etc. Simply put, there is no reason to use it unless you like being in agony
over those longshots

The players

All players:
Determination, Team Work, Work rate and Decision
Also notice that I have not
brought the "common sense stats" in any of the players beneath, like finishing
for the strikers or passing for all players etc.

Fullbacks
Style of play
When not launching an counter attack, they should stay back so no
ppms like " get forward" etc. These player act like holding players and when
seeing fit, they will try to beat their man
Stats
Here, we are looking for pace, anticipation, positioning, stamina and tackling. Dribbling is a huge plus
to.

-----------

Central Defenders
Style of play
As we use loose zonal marking, make sure that they don't have the ppm " like to
tight mark"
Stats:
The normal ones: Remember that Anticipation are crucial
for any top team and that pace is needed if the opponent launches balls over the
top of the defenders. Remember that the worse concentration they have, the more
likely you are to concede late in games and when you are dominating but not
scoring yourself

-----------

DMC´´S - Deep & Roaming
Box To Box Midfielders, hardworking
Style of play
Here we use 2 deep
BBM´s that roam to seek free space. The left is the more creative with higher
flair and decision stats.
Stats
Stamina, Strength, anticipation, tackling,
Concentration

-----------

MC - The Ballwinner
Style of play
Here we use a more limited MC that is used mainly as a ballwinner.
He keeps a much shorter passing game and does not look to play a direct ball but
instead wait for the DMCs to get forward. If this player has a good decision stats along with a great shot, he can be extremly leathal !!
Stats
Stamina, Strength, anticipation,
tackling, Concentration
-----------

Central AMC - Hardworking Advanced Playmaker
Style of play:

This player looks for space and functions as the main creator when in advanced positions. He holds ub the ball to make sure that the rest of the team have pushed up to join the attacks. Its important that this player rush forward to early in attacks. PPMs like dwells on the ball, dictates play, comes deep to get the ball, makes a pass is really good ones.
If he a **** of a longshot in him, then its a huge bonus. JUst make sure he does not have "shoots from distance" as a ppm
Stats
Pace, off the ball,flair,

-----------

OUTER AMC´S - The Pacey AMC/FC´s, Inside FCs
Style of play:
This is the main goalscorerS when facing teams pushing up their defence. They
needs to be able to find space, break free from his marker by dribbling past
him. When they moves down the line into channels.
Stats:
Off the all, Flair, Agility, First touch, Technique

-----------

Tweaks and Shouts
As its a plug
& play Tactic using classic mode, I use no tweaks and shouts are enabled

Opposition instruction
I have not used any at all but feel free to
use them in a manor that suit the actual formation. ( i.e NOT showing MR/L
wingers inside if they use overlaping fullbacks

Playmaker & Target
Man
None is used

Match prep
There is no focus area that i
crucial for the flow of the tactic. If you face a team that are great at set
pieces and might focus on attacking set pieces as their only chance, use
defensive set pieces. If up against a team you know are going to play really
deep and compact BUT have poor attackers, then use attacking movement. If up
against a team with really pacey and agile FCs, then use defensive positioning
etc etc. Naturally, I use Team Work on a heavy workload in preseason but
remember that when using a focus area that relates to the match plan ( like def
positioning), the workload have no impact what so ever.

Pitch Size
Looking at the tactic and the circumstance, and you will see the
following

•-Close down heavily: Meaning that the bigger pitch, in theory
the bigger area to close down. So teams with players lacking in stamina would
prefer a smaller pitch.

•Focus the play through the middle: If the pitch
is really short, there will be congestion in the middle will struggle to find
space.

•- Its a tactic for underdogs, hence opponents are likely to push
up and use the width or the field, : Here, a really wide pitch means that these
quality players will get too much space

•- The deep d-line and the balls
into channels - AS we play a deep d-line, we can actually use a long pitch and
as we play a more direct game, putting those t-balls into channels, we would
benefit from this long pitch in our attacks to. That is if our 3 attacking
players does have great pace and good stamina

So, in short, I would go
for a Longer but more narrow pitch

Haha. Basiclly, all these tactics where made in FM12. Now I am just testing them in FM13 and as the flow of the game looks the same and the results are good, just need to re-mane then and write an new updated post. I have about 15 more " direct counter" for underdogs and 12 more " sets of 4 versions", along with a few plug & play single version tactics for top teams :D

The main reason though is that I only work about 20 hours a week during most of the "season"

Ah gotcha. Still, can't imagine what this forum would be like without yourself and Raikan doing all this stuff. Trying to figure out mine for Blackburn and it's really challenging-not even mid November yet whereas in FM 12 the season would be done, with a lot of success. And I do like a challenge.

First few matches are promising. Lot of possession and shots.

Playing with NEC in the Dutch competition. Small team, so I'm curious how this will go.

What do you use as teamtalk?

Depends on the group of players. There really is no overall team talk. I personally take notes about what players that seems to switch off, stops listening etc and then have a pricate chat with them. If I hace a group of players that have low confidence, then this has to be build up again by showing faith, praising good preformances etc. If the group starts to show complacency, then we need to tell them that this is unacceptable. Remember that sometimes getting a player angry can result i him picking up his game.

Thanks for the advice.

Pre-season is over. Played five matches, won four and lost one. Scored 5 goals and got only one against. I think my greatest problem will be scoring goals. Dominated all the games. But I've to waite for the tactic to be fully adapted by the team.

Im really strugling... Im dominating match after match in possesion and shoots. But I cant seem to create any CCC.
Most of my shoots are from DMC/MC, long range shoots who often misses the goal.
My wingers tend to cut inside al the time, no matter what tactical apporach i choose.

Im playing Wolves, 2-6-2 in the first 10 matches in the league.

I often start with Attack or Cautious. Counter never works unless the opponent is thorowing averything at me. Otherwise I just geve the ball away to easy.

As I said... Im dominating the matches... But I dont get the results...

Any advice anyone?

Maybe you have a bad striker? Or your playmaker and wingers aren't good at passing.

I have the same problem, dominating games and scoring rarely, but I think my squad is not good enough. I have to build a good squad and that takes time.

What kind of stats does the striker need.... Speed, finishing and anticipation, but what else?

Do you have some hints for the wingers to?

This is the thing about using à possession based approach. Whilst middleteams and underdogs Will be able to retain possession, it still takes quality and flair to score those goals, Stretching the defence Of that equal opponent that sits with many men behind the ball. This is when I would use the Overload-version. Unfortunatly, this version on the ME does not support this approach very well. The players just wont make those risky passes or make those vital runs. Hopefully, this Will be adressed in the next patch.

hi TBH. I've been trying to emulate a successfull fm12 tactic i had that played 4-3-3 in fm13 with my newly promoted wolves team. I've had mixed results, standing in a very good 5th place at the beginning of febuary, although im not yet happy with my tactic. it is very inconsistent. i've managed to shut down united away and have lots of chances, but then at home to west brom i create nothing and let the opponent get quite a few shots no goal. I've also found that my wide strikers bsometimes come back at half time with 6.4/6.3 ratings or have cracking games. I too made my tactic in classic. I have defensive full backs, because they aren't very talented, then 2 defensive ball winning mid-fielders with a mildly offensive playmaker in the middle. Up front i found that opening my strikers out on the wing permitted them to help when defending, closing down the fullbacks, and with the cut-inside feature still pose some danger in the area, however this might be why they also under-achieve sometimes. I then have a "run onto ball" target man who receives through balls from the wide players or the playmaker. This seems to work, but just isn't convincing me! I've tried everything, varying positions and mentalities and am baffled at how inconsistent this all is and that, although im unhappy about my performances, i'm still in fifth, not far from 4th and 3rd!!! lol i should be happy, but i want more! your tactic looks interesting. are you happy with it? have you tested it further? im at work now, but when i get home im probably gonna give it a try.

ps - you might say my tactic is inconsistent because im always changing it around, but i've deliberately been running "test saves" with about 10 game runs with different variations of the tactic to test them out. sometimes when i find something that works, as i continue to use it it starts underperforming. would you attribute this mostly to the ME?

thanks for your time :)

Poachers would be good. Finishing, Composure, Pace, and Acceleration.

The Better Half´s Asymmetric 4222 - A Set Of 4 Versions

The Asymmetric 4222

formationq.png
leftmirror.png

Why this formation ?

Well, the reason for using an asymmetric formation is to let you use your players where they do the most damage whilst still having a balance between defence and attack, having enough players in the trasition phase

Does this formation suit a poor team or an underdog ?

Actually, this is more likely to suit better teams as the formation is a rather attacking one by default. Mind you, its all about having enough complete players in the trasition phase. If you are playing with an underdog but have hardworking wingers, AMCs and wide defenders, it works.
When I created this formation, I actually had Man City and Chelsea in mind as it lets you play most of their attacking players in the correct positions

Why a set of 4 Versions ?

Well, this is constructed for those that don’t want to simply plug & play but still feel that they are in agony with the many options of the Tactic Creator. For those that are unable to construct a tactic but still wants to feel like they are the reason they win matches, using the correct approach for each match, not the author of the tactic.
So how do you use this set then ?. Personally, I use this set to suit my managerial preferences. In some saves, I focus on building a team that relies on quick breaks that uses players with good stats in Strength, Aerobic and Tactics. Here, I am more likely to use COUNTER and OVERLOAD. In some saves, i try to build a team that focus on on passing and possession, using players with good stats in Tactics, Ball Control and Attacking. Here, I will be more likely to use ATTACKING AND CAUTIOUS POSSESSION

Key or Extended Highlights

I personally start all matches ( and 2nd half ) in full match. I then react to what I see on the pitch and are always ready to switch version. When I think I have a petty good idea of what is going on, I switch to Extended highlights, never key.

THE VERSIONS

OVERLOAD
Attacking, quick, direct with the aim to overload the opponents defence. We play with a really high line of defence and when getting into possession, the ball is quickly played onto our advanced.

ATTACKING POSSESSION
Here we play attacking with lots of width with the aim to drag the opponent out of position and make them loose their defensive shape. Possession ?. Well this is the aim anyway. Its not your ordinary possession tactic that produces lots of passes or 75 % possession though. In fact, none of the versions do. To be able to use the most of the pitch we not only use lots of width but also the length of the pitch, hence the slightly deeper d-line than your ordinary possession tactic The aim is to approach the opponent with the ball and drag them out of position by player movement with AND without the ball.

COUNTER
Quickish, direct and one the counter. Here, the aim is to exploit an already open space rather creating one.

CAUTIOUS POSSESSION
Here, the aim is to keep the ball by playing slow and compact, players evaluating every situation one more time before making an easy pass to a team mate. Here, its not about scoring many goal but to control events on the field that we otherwise would not be able to control. Never mind a poor shot on target ratio. It basically happens instead of us loosing the ball in dangerous positions

PICKING VERSION

First out, here is a really good summary on how a user called Rush is using ONE OF MY SETS in FM13 and beneath that, some of my generall hints

I am actually using the tactics from the bottom of the original post. I didn't actually read it properly I suppose and just guessed they were the ones designed for FM2013. I suppose it doesn't matter because even though they are designed for FM2012 it is still definitely working for me.

I am currently in Febuary and still top of the English Premier League with Everton (1st season with no money spent). Ive got passed the period where I thought I may just be being lucky to actually really admiring the tactic. I have slightly switched how I use it from my post before which I will explain.

I start with the attacking possession against all sides apart from Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City, & Arsenal at home. After 20minutes I see if we are dominating possession and how many chances the opponenets are having, if the opponents have had 4-5 chances in the first 20minutes and I am dominating possession I switch to cautious (so that I keep the possession advantage but dont concede as many chances against). If the opposition is winning the possession battle (even if its 50-50) I will switch to counter attack, I do this often and counter attack is when I have scored the most amount of goals.

I then review the game after 45 minutes, 60 minutes, and 75 minutes in a similar format. I dont tend to switch even from attacking if I am dominating the match. I will often switch to counter attack in the last 30-20minutes if I am 1 goal up and its a tight game.

Against the above mentioned teams at home, and also top 8 teams away from home I will start with the counter attack tactic. This is very secure defensively and its actually a bonus if the opposition control possession because it gives you more chance of scoring through a counter-attack. I very rarely switch from this during the game however if I go behind I may switch to attacking, also if the opposition is dominating possession, creating a lot of chances, and stopping me creating chances I will switch to cautious possession.

I can't see why this wouldnt work with Everton and not other top 8 sides. The AI finds it nearly impossible to pick up the whole 7 def midfield, midfield, and offensive midfield players therefore creating oppurtunities isn't a problem. Defensively the attacking possession can have holes but this is usually matched with creating more than the opposition. However a good keeper is important Howard is averaging 7.3 for me at the moment and had a few MOM.

I would encourage anyone who isn't have success with the FM2013 designed tactics to try the ones at the bottom of the original post in the format I am using.

If facing an underdog team that sits really deep and defend.

I would start out with Attack and follow the game closely, at least for the first 10 minutes. If the opponent doesn’t t lose their defensive shape due to having the whole midfield behind the ball, then perhaps trying to OVERLOAD their flanks is a better idea. Their attacks on the counter will probably be fruitless anyway since they will kick the ball up in haste onto a maximum of 2 players and we will sit with at least 3 in defense against them.

If on the other hand this compact opponent uses more men in front of the ball, then you have a better chance of scoring by using the slower and more patient ATTACK approach

Facing the superior opponent

Firstly, I would take a draw any day of the week. I would probably start with the CAUTIOUS POSSESSION unless I see that they have pushed up their defense to the limit where we easily can put balls in behind their fullbacks using COUNTER

Facing the Equal opponent
Here, I normally start out with either CAUTIOUS POSSESSION or ATTACK, depending on form, morale, home or away match. COUNTER is a version I switch to as a reaction to what I see on the pitch. If they push up and play more direct, then we can do so to and try hitting them on the break but with the COUNTERs lower d-line. Just watch out for those pacey AMR/L that might run awoke in our defense. If they are superior to our fullbacks, then the opponent have an advantage, just like in any tactic

THE PLAYERS

The thing about squad building is not only to get players with great CA/PA and get a balance between defensive, supporting and attacking players. Its also to get players that can play a certain role and by using their skills and preferences able you to overcome a vaietry of opponents and managerial tactical approaches. If playing as a top team, its a must to have creative players acting from deep as well as players able to create chances and break the pattern in more advanced postions. For bottom team is hugely important to have hardworking players both in defense AND in the attacking phase, players that feel obligated to track back and take a good defensive position. Have this in mind when reading up on the different playerroles

FORWARD

Here, I would use different players depending on what team I am managing.

FC LEFT
If you are playing with a top notch team, you would be better off with a more complete player that likes to come deep to get the ball. Players like Rooney, R.V.P. Aguero, and Tevez etc. This is naturally mainly down to the reason that you are more likely to use the more attacking versions where it’s better that the player links up with play rather than going straight for goal. Using a lesser team, then any hardworking player that likes to play with their back towards the goal is good

FC RIGHT
Here we use our main goalscorer. For absolute top teams, its best to use a complete FC that DOES NOT like to come deep. For middle teams, an advanced FC is the best choice. For underdogs, using a quick poacher that likes to beat the offside trap is the better choice

THE WINGER

WINGER
Here we use an attacking winger that looks to get forward by moving into channels. He plays a short passing game and looks to get inside..OR…if being a great crosses, one that likes to hug the line. Most of the time, this is not the player that gets the highest of ratings as opening up space and making “2nd-assists” just does not give high ratings

THE CENTRAL MIDFIELDERS
Here, we use a Passer-Creator- Destroyer partnership. When reading about the roels beneath, look at it as tendencies rather as something written in stone.

ATTACKING CENTRAL MID
Here we have the creator. He is the player that mainly stays back to link up with the rest of the team, not breaking forward early in attacks. He has a free role to be able to pass and move, pass and move. As he no cover just behind him, he has a bigger defensive responsibility and should there for be able to defend, or at least be willing to.
In short, it’s a Trequartista with defensive duties

CENTRAL MID
Here we have a Central Mid or a Box2Box Midfielder. Its crucial that he don’t put too much emphasis on the attacking play or likes to “stay back” at all times. As he is the focal point in the build up, being the only player in the MC-strata, he really needs good stats in Passing and decision.

DEFENSIVE MID
Here is your destroyer. When playing with absolute top teams or have the ambition to be one, then having a complete DMC is naturally the best options. But for those teams that do not have the funds, let’s just make sure that he is great at defending and is able to read the game and make good decision

WINGBACKS/FULLBACKS

When looking at the formation you will see that there is one fullbakc and one wingback. This means that the bigger the team you are and the more likely you are to play more adventures, the more complete the have to be. Depending on opposition, always reconsider who to play. If the opponents are playing with really quick and smart AMR/L, then it’s perhaps better to use a more cautious wingback/fullback but if playing against a lesser team or a team lacking in quality down the flanks, don’t be afraid to start with players that has really attacking ppms.

CENTRAL DEFENDERS

Not much to see here. They are basically your standard limited defender in a flat 2 men partnership. As they are so limited, it is important that they do have good concentration and above average in decision.

MATCH PREP
The Better the team, the more adventures you can be but in the end, it highly depends on the opposition

- If playing with a top team and are using the Attacking possession approach, I would probably go for Attacking movement unless its a team that has really, really strong headers and have scored 5 goals from corners in their 6 matches, then defensive set pieces might be a good idea.

- If playing the counter version and really want to punish their slow defenders, you can again go for the Att. movement but if you fear their superior movement, then def. positioning is the way to go.

- If you feel your only chance is playing cautious, then you might go for Def.positioning, but if you feel comfortable in this area and it looks like you have a taller team then them ( like Celtic versu Barca), then your best chance might be using Cautious Possession and using Att.set pieces

So, it depends

As for what 3 versions to put in the match prep, I suggest Attacking possession, Counter and Cautious Possession as the team will be pretty familiar with the overload anyway being a mixture of all the other team settings

RESULTS SO FAR WITH A TOP TEAM

Just want to share my progress with Chelsea. Can't praise this tactic enough and don't understand why it's not more popular than it is! TheBetterHalf is tactical genius!
